    1. [CADY-L] Cady family in Battle Creek, MI 1863 onwards
    2. Ted Pack
    3. Greetings from California. Our family tradition, based on a DAR application from the 1920's, is: Palmer Cady fought in the Revolution; his son, Ela (Eli, Ely) Cady, b. 1781 in Canaan, Columbia New York, married Elizabeth (Betsey, Betty) Waterman, she b. 10 Oct 1779. Their son, Alexander Cady married Fanny (Francis, Fannie) Hotchkiss (Hotchkin, Hotchkins). I haven't been able to find any proof of this line outside of the DAR application. The only Ela Cady I've found, in Descendants of Nicholas Cady, is Palmer's nephew, not his son; and this Ela dies without issue. There is an Ely Cady in the Mormon's IGI who has all of his children baptized 2 Nov 1823 in Chatham, Columbia, New York. Among Ely's children is Alexander Frazer. >From the other end, Alexander died young, in Rochester, NY, in 1849. (Just before the 1850 Census, drat the luck.) His widow remarried a no-good rascal who was after her land. She divorced him and moved to Battle Creek in 1863. Four of her children went with her. From there I have pretty good documentation, in the form of newspaper clippings from the good people at the Willard Library in Battle Creek. Everything I have from them has Alexander's middle name as Hamilton. Here are the five generations I have from Alexander on down. I'd be delighted to meet another Cady researcher who can help me fill in the gaps. I would be happy to share data, including the articles the Willard library sent me. Alexander was my great-great grandfather through George Waterman Cady, who didn't move to Battle Creek. Oliver H. Cady moved to St. Joseph, Missouri; the rest lived in Battle Creek. 1) Alexander Cady, b. 8 Dec 1812, d. 18 Aug 1849 sp: Fannie Hotchkiss, b. 20 Nov 1814, d. ???? 2) Edward H Cady, b. 21 Nov 1835) 11 Mar 1837 2) George Waterman Cady, b. 16 Sep 1837, d. 9 Sep 1913 2) Oliver H. 1. [CADY-L] Marriage records--Michigan answer & New York question
    2. Suzanne Frantz
    3. Hi everyone, Steve, in regard to your Michigan family, and for anyone else who is interested: The state of Michigan kept very good marriage records. I have even found a record of a marriage performed on the "lumbering frontier." The County Clerk of each county will have the marriage records, and a phone call will tell you how to proceed from there (although sometimes the staff will look up a record for you while on the phone.) Here is the address of the Michigan Genweb which lists all the county clerks: http://www.rootsweb.com/~migenweb/ Remember, if the county was formed out of another and the marriage was performed before that date, the records will be with the Original county. The county listing on the Michigan site will give the dates the counties were formed. New York State records: I understand that New York does not have uniform marriage records for the 19th century. I am wondering if any of you upstate-Yorkers out there can give me ideas on how to locate a marriage record for February 1854 for Sarah Cady and Lution Fairfield, probably Steuben County. Are there extractions from newspapers or church records? Sue Descendant of Sarah H. Cady, Southbridge, MA, Steuben Co. NY & St. Clair County, Mich.

    2. Illyce MacDonald
    3. I have just joined the Cady list and am most interested in the information Suzanne Frantz posted for Shirley Cleveland. My g-g-grandfather was Andrew Cady born in Tioga County PA in 1841. He was living (or just visiting) his Aunt Emma Van Deusen in 1850 when the Federal census was taken. I recently found a listing for him in the IGI as being the son of Chester and Catherine(Baxter)Cady. Does any one else have him listed in their family records? He married Sarah (Sally) Cummings July 4 1865 in PA. They had two children, Minerva and George, moving to and homesteading in Michigan in the 1870s. Andrew died in Saginaw Michigan 6 Dec 1916. I am looking for confirmation from sources, other than the IGI, for the names of his parents and possible siblings. Thanks in advance! 3. Hi everyone, Here is a site that you may like to browse through which contains quite a few Cadys. It is the Windham County, Connecticut, site at: http://w3.nai.net/~lmerrell/windham.html This is an interesting site in itself, but if you scroll about half way down, you will come to links for the towns of Killingly and Pomfret. Both have many Cadys in the marriage, census, and cemetery transcriptions. Sue Descendant of Sarah H. Cady of Southbridge, MA, Steuben Co. NY & St. Clair, Mich.

    2. Hello all, I am a new member of the list. I am interested in the CADY family of Montgomery County, NY, circa 1760's, and their connection to the SHULER and BECKER families. The later generations of Shulers and Beckers moved to Jefferson County, NY. The Cady name was carried down as a middle name in my husband's family through to his great-grandfather David Cady Becker. I would be interested in hearing from anyone researching this line. Thank you. 2. Suzanne Frantz
    3. Hi Steve, Re your posting about Thomas Cady & Adelia Fifield, who married in Michigan c 1850: This rang a far-off bell with me, only because the surnames are almost exactly those of my great-greats: Sarah H. Cady and Lution Fairfield. (I believe that "Fifield" has to be a corruption of "Fairfield.") Sarah and Lution were married in New York State in 1854 and lived in Steuben County until they emigrated to St. Clair County, Michigan about 1864. I know nothing about the families of these two, except that Lution's parents were John Fairfield & Lydia Dodge, from Woodstock, Windham County, Conn., and Sarah's parents were thought to be August Cady & Helen Lyons from Southbridge, Mass. I understand that neither Fairfield or Cady were especially common, and I can't help but wonder if there is a relationship some where. Do you know where in Michigan Thomas & Adelia married? Also, I encourage everyone to post responses to the list--that way we can all benefit! Thanks for your post, Sue Descendent of Sarah H. Cady

    2. George E. & Helen A. Sawyer
    3. Mary, I have not heard back from Vickie yet but hope to soon. You can try writing to this Anne Cady at acady@bloominton.in.us I have never written to her but that is who sent the original message to my friend, Vickie. You can also write to Barry at Barrymor@aol.com He seems to be involved in Cady research also. There is a Martin Jones researching Cady in Indiana his e-mail is mjonesmat@aol.com I am not sure who your Samuel is but I have found a Samuel Cady here is Steuben Co., NY in the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census then he disappears. I can only guess that he went to IN. or some such place. I found that there is a Cady cemetery in Otter Creek Township, Ripley Co, Indiana. There is a Rev. Samuel Cady buried there having died April 18, 1851 at age 79 years, 3 months, 9 days. and his wife Sarah Thomas Cady is also believed to have been buried there. In the same cemetery there is a Fanna E. Cady (Cameron) who died March 30, 1852 at age 26 years, 7 months, 20 days. She married Dec. 25, 1844 to Dr. A.P. Cady. As you can see you have sparked my interest and if you hear from any of these people I would most certainly like to know what is said. Perhaps you could forward their messages to me, PLEASE ! If we could tie them into the descendants of Nicholas Cady I would like to add them to my web site. By the way I DO NOT post people born after 1900 on the internet. I have found it is not a good idea. People like their privacy and I appreciate that and do my best to guarantee that they keep their privacy. So if you have current day information you would like to share with me it will be kept private. I shall still keep looking around here for more information to help you. I am fairly sure that Samuel came from Steuben County, NY and is linked to my Cady family. Keep in touch talk to you later. Your friend in New York George

    1. [CADY-L] Welcome!
    2. Suzanne Frantz
    3. Welcome! The Cady List is now about two weeks old and growing nicely. Because we have many new members, let's all introduce ourselves by posting our Cady Family interests. And because we have many "new folks," I will restate the goals of our list, which are to facilitate research on the Cady/Cadie surname and to have some fun and comaraderie while doing so. While you are encouraged to limit the discussion to genealogy, the subject is a broad one--insights on history and geography, family/family reunion news, tips on good websites, will be welcome. There will be times when one particular line is focused on, or the topics dwindle, but tidbits show up at the most unexpected times! Please do not send attachments to the list--it won't be able to receive them. When posting a reply, it is a good idea to address it to the list as a whole, rather than privately. That way we will all benefit. Contact me at <suzyfrtz@tir.com> if you have any problems. The Rootsweb site itself contains much interesting information. This is Your List! Spread the word to any and all Cady researchers you may know. Sue Descendant of Sarah H. Cady of Southbridge, MA, Steuben Co. NY & St. Clair, Mich.
