    3. I wrote to the library in Palmyra, NY looking for information about Alexander or Ela Cady. The librarian there couldn't find my elusive ancestors, but he very kindly sent me these snippets. The address is Palmyra Kings Daughter's Library 127 Cuyler Street, Palmyra, NY 14522 (315) 597-5276 The first set of snippets appear to be copies of 3x5 cards typed from newspaper articles by some devoted volunteer. 3. I tried to send this a couple of days ago, but apparently put wrong address/subject in my computer a/c it never got to the list. I'll shorten it this time. Earlier, Suzanne and others were discussing whether there were Cady progenitors other than Nicholas. I checked my copy of Orrin Peer Allen's 1910 "Descendants of Nicholas Cady of Watertwon Mass) and found, in his introduction, several references to other Cadys. Among them, James Cade, who settled in Hingham, Mass in 1635 and later moved to Boston. (There's also a James Cady who was one of Nicholas Cady's sons, so if you're researching that line, it can be confusing.) Then there's a Thomas Cade of Sturgis, St. Joseph County, Michigan, who was born in Yorkshire,England in 1786, so obviously is not descended from Nicholas. Hope this helps some of you. Also...I suppose all of you know that Cady has, through the centuries, been spelled several other ways: Cade, Caddie, Cadye, Caddy, and Kadye, to name those that Allen lists. If you don't have access to Orrin Peer Allen's book and want to know more about James Cade, Thomas Cade, or other Cadys discovered and mentioned in Allen's intro, let me know and I'll send that bit of info. 1. [CADY-L] Patriarch other than Nicholas CADY
    2. Dennis Panetti
    3. To Suzanne and others wondering if there are other Cadys from which some of us might be descended: I got out my copy of Orrin Peer Allen's 1910 "Descendants of Nicholas Cady of Watertown, Mass" and found there were, in fact, other Cadys. First point: in your searches, you should know that "Cady" could also be spelled Cade, Caddie,Caddy, Cadye, Kadye, --all spellings used earlier, before "Cady" became the usual spelling. The name is derived from Ca-dia, a Gaelic word which means "House of God". Also, "Cadie" in Scottish, is an errand boy, a messenger. Allen deduced that the Cady name started in Scotland, then Cadys moved into England. Several Cadys had coats of arms in various English counties. (Source: Introduction to "Descendants of Nicholas Cady") Quoting Allen again, p. 11 of his introduction, "James Cade, who settled in Hingham, Mass., 1635, was bapt. May 16, 1611, the son of Christopher Cade, bapt. Apr. 10, 1583, son of James Cade, bapt. June 29, 1552, all natives of Northam County Devon, Eng. The younger, James Cade, married Aug. 21, 1633, Margaret Browne of Bidford, near Northam. " Continuing...James and Margaret Cade's oldest son, Phillip, was born in Northam in 1635. Then some time in 1635, James and family migrated to New England and "was the first one to draw his house lot in Hingham, Mass., Sept. 18, 1635"---he was one of the first 29 settlers. (p. 11 of Orrin Peer Allen's introduction. His source: Vide N.E. Gen. Reg.) James and Margaret Cade later went to Boston (p. 12). Several other Cadys are listed in this intro...if anyone is interested, I'll send that info. Also, Thomas Cade of Sturgis, St. Joseph Co. , Michigan was born in Yorkshire, Engl. in 1786...so some Midwestern Cadys may be descended from him. )Also Allen Peer Allen's intro.) There are also several Lyman Cadys listed in index. I'll try to check those later, but need to move on to other chores. Hope this helps some of you!

    3. This is more like a "Hint from Heloise" than a snippet of genealogy data. Scanners have advanced a lot in the past few years. Most of them have Optical Character Recognition, or OCR. They can read clean documents and put the data into a text file. If the page is clean, clear and in a commonly used font, it takes a minute or two per page. The one we have at work, a top of the line model, has read copies of pages from old books, with ten generations of Xerox pimples, with 90% accuracy. It reads original pages -- things I printed once and deleted, then decided I wanted to keep -- with 99% accuracy. Scanners start at $59 at Wal*Mart and go up to $200 or so. Some copy shops (Kinko's, in my neck of the woods) will let you use theirs for $10 an hour. Scanning hard copy wouldn't be particularly efficient if you just have names. Scanners can't enter names, birthdates and relationships into the proper slots of your genealogy program. If you have three pages of notes for the first four generations, a scanner might be worth thinking about. ----- Original Message ----- From: Eric and Sara Long <scoobydoo@sltic.com> To: <CADY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 1999 5:22 AM Subject: [CADY-L] Lemuel Cady and Ruth Gleason > > Looking for those researching Lemuel Cady and Ruth Gleason. 1. [CADY-L] My Cady Family
    2. Suzanne Frantz
    3. From: Suzanne Frantz <suzyfrtz@tir.com> To: CADY-L@rootsweb,com Subject: My Cady Faamily Date: Wednesday, July 14, 1999 9:34 AM Glad to see all the recent posts. Let's hear from everyone, and have a roll call. My Cady line is the most difficult line I am researching. My great-great grandmother was Sarah H. Cady, born in Southbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts 22 March 1836. She claimed her parents' names were August Cady, born in Connecticut, and Helen Lyons (Lyon), born in Massachusetts. I have been unable to find any "August Cady" in the area, and it has been suggested that August was a middle name. In the 1850 census, Sarah' s future husband, Lution (Lucien) Fairfield, was living in Southbridge with the family of John Vinton. There were Lyons families as neighbors. Last Thursday, while at the Library of Michigan, I went through each name in the 1850 census of Southbridge, hoping to find Sarah, or someone who could possibly be "August." I found only one Cady family, and wouldn't you know, the name was hardly readable, but seemed like F. W. Cady, age 30, born in Connecticut, wife Dimetta? aged 20, and a George W. age 15. Of course, "August" could have been dead by this time, but I was hoping to find Sarah. My next step, when I get back to Lansing, will be to check the 1850 census for the near-by towns line by line for Sarah. There is always the possiblity they migrated to New York State, but have no clue where. Strangely enough, no one by their names are listed in the deeds of the area or in the Southbridge Vital Records. Good hunting to all, Sue Cady List Manager > > > > > >
