There are several questions starting with William;s father who is listed as Captain Joseph in some literature. I suggest a Y-DNA test ass the best way to verify. I am on FamilytreeDNA.com and AncestryDNA.com. Most Cady's who track back to New England, before 1840, are related to Danish invaders of England. 1. [CADY] William CADY (1685-1735) son of Joseph or Nicholas

    3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: Cady Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Disputed between Nicholas Cady (1664-1724) and Joseph Cady (1666-1742). William was born in Groton, Middlesex, MA and likely moved to Killingley, Windham Co, CT in 1706. My first question was why was he named William? William Cady was a infamous highwayman from England and the name was not common amount early Cady families. He was born after William and Mary took the thrown in England (1688) and before King Williamâs War in North America (1688-1697). Their maternal Grandfather was William Knapp who died in 1656 and it appears he was living on public assistance less money collected for rental of his property. For a time the tradition was to name a son for the father-in-law, then uncles or godfathers. As William was the first born, we need to look at his maternal grandfather. Josephâs father-in-law was Samuel Davis, Nicholasâ father-in-law was William Redland. My best guess was that William was named for his father-in-law William Redland. Next question was who was his father? Nicholas married Patience Redland in 1683 and had a son William (1685-1735) who was listed as unmarried. . Joseph married Sarah Davis in 1689 and his first was Joseph Justice Cady (1690-1768) and his second son was James (1693-1732). William Cady (1692-Unk) was placed as his second son because he did not fit anywhere else. It is known the brothers were close and Joseph gifted widow Patience Cady, land north of Killingley. Joseph also gifted land to his sonâs in the same area, however it is unclear if William was included. So, I looked at the details of their lives and found John, Daniel, Nicholas and Joseph were involved in defending against Native American attacks on Groton (1691-92). The families were moved to Cambridge and did not return until after the war. Daniel, Nicholas, and Joseph moved to Windham County, CT about 1706 and lived near each other. Nicholas moved to Preston,CT prior to 1720 and William died their in 1735. Conclusion: There was only one William and he was the first son of Nicholas III.

These locations are not that close. I have no idea how it got started that they were related. Cady is most likely a variant of Cade. Both can be pronounced Kay-dee. Rather interestingly Cade is found frequently in Sussex, but it might be pronounced Ca-id. Because of this pronunciation issue the names are different, Cade (Ca-id) was of french origin for a sought wine barrel. Cade (kay-dee) is thought to be of Gaelic origin, it predated Anglo-Norman, Scottish, and English. In 1995, there was a book on dialects, if you are interested in studying the differences in Suffolk and Sussex. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: CADY Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: I was looking for a David and Joseph Cady. I know Joseph C Cady Sr died in Apr 1821 and David died in Aug 1821 both in Mill Creek, Hamilton, Ohio. Brothers named David and Joseph are rare, and one set was found in Mohawk, Montgomery, New York in 1790. In fact, there are several interesting possibilities, Daniel Cady (b 1745) David Cady (b 1748). David Cady Jr (1770) amd Joseph (1770). David Cady was in Wayne County, PA in 1800 and it appeared he was in Otsego County before that. Then I found out that Otsego County only organized in 1791 and before that it was past of Montgomery County, which covered much of the State. The township of Mohawk covered much of Otsego County, and only Cherry Valley, Harpersville and Otsego were separate townships. In 1791, Herkimer, Otsego, and Tioga counties were split off from Montgomery County and Mohawk was split between two other townships. In 1793, Burlington, Otsego, Richfield, Unadilla, Harperville, Franklin and Cherry Valley were listed as townships in the county. Each Township had several villages that appear in later years, with Cooperstown as county seat was in Cherry Valley. In short, records for Montgomery County might contain info on Cadyâs (As an ecample=Canajoharie became Milden, Montgomery, NY) A brief history of the Revolutions major military activities included the siege at Fort Stanwix, the battle at Oriskany in 1777, the Cherry Valley Massacre in 1778, the 1779 the expedition against the Iroquois led by General John Sullivan through the Finger Lakes Region, and 1780 attacks on Oneida Castle, Fort Plain and Johnstown. Sir John Johnson devastated the the Mohawk Valley and Schoharie Valley in 1781 before retreating to Canada. With the end of the war, the area started to recover and land grants from the King were replaced with land sales to repay war debts. The effect of William Cooper had on American expansion is often overlooked. His plan was to sell land and offer to carry the mortgage; this gave settlers a stake in the future. The British system gad the Manor Lord renting the land but holding title and it was not uncommon for tenants to be thrown off the land. After the Ordinance of 1789, more land was available and with improved technology, farms got larger, this went far to make America great. (Think Steel Plow, seed envelopes) I understand why many New Englanders left Upstate New York for Ohio, Michigan and points west. Why settle on 40 acres when you can get 160 acres in the west, plus technology made it easier to move. (Think Canals and Railroads) For Genealogist Upstate New York is a black hole because the area was settled rapidly before the infrastructure was available that and many settlers moved west when they could. This makes finding David and Joseph hard to find. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Buried in Spencerville, Allen County, Ohio. The Ohio Death Certificate lists Eliga Griggs and Anna Rogers as her parents. Both born in New York. I am pretty sure Alfred and Mary come from Troupsburg, Steuben County, New York. Alfred is the son of Hollis Burr Cady. He and Mary moved to Jackson, Minnesota and lived close to their sons Wesley and Adelbert. Wesley stayed in Minnesota, while Alfred, Mary and Adelbert's family moved to Ohio. Adelbert moved to St Mary's, Auglaize County, Ohio and Alfred and Mary moved to Spencerville, Allen County, Ohio. Both are buried there with their daughter Martha J. Cady Cornell. I am trying to verify if my information is correct and I cannot verify the connection between Eliga and Anna Rogers. Haven't been able to find any documentation. Eliga may have died and Anna remarried to a Rogers. Any help with my research would be appreciated. Thanks Greg Cady. 3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: CADY, church, alexander, johnson Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Not much was known about James, mainly as he died in Feb 1732. He had four children and left a wife Abigail (Chambers) Cady (1701-1757). My research was started to find his son Penuel Cady born in Oct 1732. James had three daughters Bethsheba (Cady) Johnson (1717-179x), Prudence (Cady) Alexander (1718â1812) and Abigail (Cady) Church (1726-1797). In the History of Windham County, CT James is mentioned several times. His father gave him and each of his brothers 40 acres of land in what was Thompson Township. He was active in the 2nd Killingley Congregational Church (Thompson Parish) He was also involved in the Thompson School, and he had a seasonal grist mill in Thompson. His death before the birth of his son, Penuelâs in Oct 1732, leaves many questions. James father Capt Joseph died in 1742 and it is likely young Penuel was raised outside of the Cady family of Killingley. His name is the first issue I researched. Traditionally, the first son was named for the father-in-law, this was not a hard and fast rule. We know Capt Penuel Child (1699-1756) was a friend of Capt Joseph Cady (first Captain of Militia in Killingley) and that several of the Childâs clan were officers of Militia (Capt Benjamin, Capt Josiah and Lt Ephraim) to be named for Capt Penuel Child implies some relationship. My first guess was Abigail was the daughter of Capt Child, but this did not pan out. Capt Penuel Child was active in the French and Indian War and was a local hero, but all this happened after Penuel Cady was born. This is a puzzle, as with James death it is unclear what the relationship was. It is known Jamesâ brother Benjamin also named a son Penuel (b 1745) as did a cousin Daniel named two sonâs Penuel (b1749-d1750, b 1754) and a third Penuel (b1761) was also in Danielâs line. Daniel Cady Sr and Capt Joseph Cady were brothers and neighbors. Second issue was Bathsheba Cady Johnson. She married Barachiah Johnson (1717-1740). But the surname Johnson appeared in later generations, which might be a tribute to her (see Benjamin Johnson Cady). Early records for Thompson Parish were lost and most of what I found was from Killingley. It is thought the Johnsonâs and Churchâs moved to Butternuts, Otsego, NY. (William Cooper (1754-1809 of New Jersey) had a new idea that opened up New York to settlement, he sold the land for a small down payment and he held the mortgage on the balance. This opened up Otsego (Tryon Co. renamed Montgomery Co.) and neighboring counties to many New Englanders.) Most migration started before 1789 and many of these earlier settlers found reasons to move west, as the population increased then dropped with in few years. Possibly because the Ordinance of 1789 opened more land for them. In the early 1770âs Windham County was the center for land speculation due west of Connecticut. The Susquehanna Land Company (founded 1753), was set up to sell land in Northern Pennsylvania to Connecticut Yankeeâs starting about 1768. This resulted in several conflicts and many were forced to leave, including the Troy and Indian attacks of 1778. It was not until the late 1790âs that the Pennsylvania Legislator confirmed land ownership of settlers from New England, as per the Trenton Compromise. Because of this I found David Cady who shows up in 1798 in Lackawaxen,Wayne Co, PA and on the Census of 1800 in Palmyra,Wayne Co, PA, David and Joseph Cady appears in Mohawk, Montgomery Co, New York on the Census of 1790. In 1791, Montgomery was divided into five counties of which Otsego County was one. Mohawk Township was also divided between other towns and disappears. I note the Census of 1850 to 1870 lists Daniel W Cady b 1786 CT, Joseph Cady Jr 1794 PA and Benjamin Johnson Cady 1797 NY and Lucinda Cady their aunt was born 1763 CT. This only matches with David and Joseph Cady who moved from New York to Pennsylvania to Ohio. Third issue Abigail Church, she died in 1797 Butternuts, Otsego, NY and this is where we found David Cady after 1790 son of _____Cady . Abigail married Jonathan Church (1724-1797) and they had eight children Elizabeth Church (1748â1813), Mary Church (1750-), Amassa Church (1755â1839), Abigail Church(1756-1856), Willard Church (1758â1847), Eli (1763-1782), James Cady Church (1765-) and Clarissa Church (1768-1841) . In about 1783, the family moved to Otsego County (then know as Tryon and later as Montgomery County) Abigailâs mother Abigail Chambers Cady (1701-1785) died in Killingley, Windham, NY and we do not have any record of Penuel Cady. We know he likely was in Thompson or Pomfret Parish where records were lost. In the âHistory of Windham Countyâ , I did not find him listed, which only means he was not involved in politics. As David and Joseph were born about 1760-70, Penuel was ideal for being their parent. It is thought the Churchâs, Johnsonâs and Cadyâs moved to Burlington, Otsego, NY at about this time. I looked at Penuel Cady, son of Benjamin and Penuel Cady and Naham Cady sons of Daniel Cady as the possible parent of David and Joseph. Benjaminâs son Penuel seems to be well documented and can be elimited. I discussed James son Penuel above which leaves Daniel son Naham (1721-1785) who had sonâs Penuel (1754- ) and Naham Jr (1752-1815). Naham Sr is often thought to be the father of David and Joseph Sr, but he had other children that make it unlikely, Naham Jr married Polly Johnson. He is more likely, but seems a bit off in age. David and Joseph Sr were born between 1760 and 1765 (Based on the age of their sonâs and Lucinda age) Naham moved to Hartford County where records were missing (some records are misfiled under Child and Clay) making it harder to find a connection. Naham Jr had several children starting in 1785 who were documented. I do not see Naham Jr as a strong possibility. I am looking at his other relatives. 3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: Cady Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: I found information that links BJC to Joseph C Cady Jr, Naham Cady and Daniel Wilson Cady. I believe Joseph C Cady Sr and David Cady were the parents of the boys, but finding them was a problem. David Cady shows up in Wayne County, PA in 1798 and the Census of 1800, he is in Ohio between 1805 and 1818 when he purchases Congressional Lands (west of the Great Miami,River). This is where we find Joseph (Cody) in the Census of 1820. Brothers with the name Joseph and David are rare and in the Census of 1790 there is one pair in Mohawk, Montgomery, New York. If you look for this place, understand that in 1791 it was divided into five counties and the township was split between several others. I am not sure which county they ended up in, most likely Otsego. By 1800, they were likely in Wayne Co. Pennsylvania selling land to John Johnson. We might never know when they purchased land in Ohio as the records were destroyed (Symmes or Ludlow). If we accept David and Joseph were in New York in 1790. Pennsylvania in 1800 and Ohio in 1810 and 1820, we then just need to find their parents, most likely from Connecticut. (as was David's wife Lucinda (1763-1856) born in CT, as was Daniel W Cady (1786-186X) ). The best clue is the names the brothers used to name their children. Harris Penuel, Wilson Moore, Henry Leming, Joseph Daniel, Silas Naham, William Henry, Benjamin Franklin, James Curtis, Penuel M, Elmore, Johnson, David, and Joseph, John, Purnel, Naham, and Francis. The common names Penuel (Purnal), Naham and Joseph point to possible ancestors. It points to the two families, Capt Joseph Cady and Daniel Cady Jr which have leads to those names, especially Penuel ( a rarely given first name) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: Cady Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: I have found that Joseph C Cady Sr (176x-1821)was the father of BJC, He died in Mill Creek, Hamilton, Ohio, but he left property that ended up in the hands of his son's. In 1830 Danial Wilson Cady lived in Miamitown, Hamilton, Oh and from 1840 on the property was in the hands of Naham Cady (under various surnames Hadye, Keidy). I found an uncle David Cady (176 x-1821) who has been easier to find, he also died in Mill Creek six months after Joseph. Records were lost but it was clear that Joseph Cleveland Cady (1770-1840)family arrived long after they had died, which helps to explain how the confusion occurred. 1. [CADY] Searching For Cady ancestors

    3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: cady Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: In Census records from 1880 and older, the Surname Cady is often misspelled or mistranscribed (up to 50%). Searching by similar names or even soundex might not be good enough. I have searched by initials, wife's first name, and even by neighbors. Many families moved as often as every five years, so searches by DOB and State of Birth might narrow down the search. In older Census searches, some records are just not there, I have found some in one census and still there two census later, but not listing between, especially in Upstate New York and in the Northwestern Territories. In Connecticut records in some locations have been lost. I found many people listed in the âHistory of Windham Countyâ that are not in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Churches. I like to look at the history of an area, but it is the survivors who write the history and many times I was looking at someone who left. Upstate New York was popular after the revolution, but why settle for forty acres and a mortgage when you can move west and get up to 160 acres for a fraction of the cost. I saw some counties grew from a few hundred to ten times that and then lose half their population within a decade. Of late, I have found âFind a Graveâ to be helpful, especially if the surname has several possible listings. The key sometimes is to look at the Technology. Early migration was by water, then road and canal or keel boat and then steam boat. Railroads wipe out the canals. Travel by wagon was time consuming, and although many took the Oregon Trail, the fastest way to California was by steamboat to New Orleans and then across Mexico or Panama and up the West Coast. 1. Re: [CADY] New evidence on Surname Cady
    2. RootsWeb Gateway Notification
    3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: cady, cade Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Most surname Cadyâs who trace their ancestry back to before 1840 and New England are related. The Irish potato famine resulted in many new Cadyâs (and similar names) arriving in America, some of these listed being born in England or Canada but were Irish. If you do not know, think of starting with a Y-DNA test, it appears many New England Cadyâs are Haplotype âIâ (Nordic) and others are Haplotype âRâ (Gaelic). To add to the confusing the Cady surname is thought to be Gaelic in origin, but here are as many as 60 possible origins for the surname. The name originated in the Anglo-Norman period, which per-dates early English and Scottish. Most list it in Suffolk County, England in areas known to be settled by Clan Anglo and later by Danes (Vikings), both of who originated in the same area of Denmark. The Anglo's arrival after 660, which was long after the Romans had forced out most Celts (Gaelic). I have often wondered if an Irish monk stationed in Bury St Edmunds Abbey gave the name to a local family, which is as good a guess as any of the other origins I have seen. The name is likely related to Cade (Cadee) pronounced Kay-dee, and not the french Cade pronounced Ca-id which is more prevalent in Sussex, England. I note two infamous Cade/Cadyâs, Jack Cady the revolutionary leader of England and William Cady a highwayman, of the surnames being interchangeable. It was not until the 1800's that the surnames became separate. even now the surname Cady is far more common in America than England where as Cade is more common in England than America. 1. [CADY] James Cady (1694–1732) son of Capt Joseph Cady

    3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jcady622 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Not much was known about James, mainly as he died in Feb 1732. In the History of Windham County, CT he is mentioned several times. His father gave him and each of his brothers 40 acres of land in what was Thompson Township. He was active in the 2nd Killingley Congregational Church (Thompson Parish) He was also involved in the Thompson School. He also had a seasonal grist mill in Thompson. His death before the birth of his son, leaves many questions. James father Joseph died in 1742 and it is likely young Penuel was raised outside of the Cady family of Killingley. His name is the first issue I researched. Traditionally, the first son was named for the father-in-law or god-father, this was not a hard and fast rule. We know Capt Penuel Child (1699-1756) was a friend of Capt Joseph Cady (first Captain of Militia in Killingly) and was James age. That several of the Child;s clan were officers of Militia (Capt Benjamin, Capt Josiah and Lt Ephraim) to be named for Capt Penuel implies some relationship. My first guess was Abigail was the daughter of Capt Child, but this did not pan out. Capt Penuel Child was active in the French and Indian War and was a local hero, but all this happened after Penuel Cady was born. Second issue was Bethsheba Cady Johnson. She married Barachiah Johnson (1717-1740) As a widow she disappears. But the surname appeared in later generations, which might be a tribute to her. Early records for Thompson Parish were lost and most of what I found was from Killingley. It is thought she moved to Butternuts, Otsego, NY. (William Cooper (1754-1809 of New Jersey) had a new idea that opened up New York to settlement, he sold the land for a small down payment and he held the mortgage on the balance.) This opened up Otsego (Tryon Co. renamed Montgomery Co.) and neighboring counties to many New Englanders. Most migration started after 1790 and many of these earlier settlers found reasons to move west, as the population increased then dropped with in few years. Because of this I found David Cady who shows up in 1798 in Lackawaxen,Wayne Co, PA and on the Census of 1800 in Palmyra,Wayne Co, PA, He also appears in Otsego Co, New York on the Census of 1800. Third issue Abigail Church died in Butternuts, Otsego, NY and this is where we find David Cady about 1800 son of _____ . There is much to be researched in Otsego, but so many moved thru in a short time. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rpace1524 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: My 4x great grandfather was Alva Cady, son of Jeremiah Cady and Tameson. I just recently discovered Jeremiah's will on Ancestry, Alva was the sole executor of his father's estate. He died July 4, 1850 in Berrien CO, MI. Asahel was the brother of Alvah. The will spells out several of Jeremiah's children. Josiah who married Lois Calkins, Olive who married a Reed, Sally who married Edmund Austin, Roxana who at the time of her father's death was unmarried and living with her parents. A grandaughter, Clarissa Cady a minor was willed $25 from Jeremiah's estate, I believe her mother was Roxana who had married John Goff from Cayuga County. She died in 1844 and is buried in Moravia, NY. Clarissa Cady married Ebenezer Goff about 1841 who was the son of John Goff. She came to Marcellus, MI where she died in 1847. The will mentions John Pine who married a Tamacy Cady around 1811 in Saratoga, NY. I believe Tamacy Cady was also the daughter of Tameson Cady and JEREMIAH. In his will he mentions his beloved wife Tamacy. I believe TAMACY Cady Pine was named after her mother. I have found all of the Pine children who I believe were grandchildren of Jeremiah. Most of them went to Winnebago, WI. Asahel and Alvah must have been at odds over provisions their father had in his will. Several codicils were added to their father's will concerning access to a quarry etc. Alvah came to Michigan in 1843. According to Alvah's tombstone he was born in 1806 not 1786 as many claim. They are a complex family as many are. Regards. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: tedpack Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Hi Megan, Welcome to the club. Genealogy is a fascinating hobby to us geezers. We may be able to tell you a little about your family, but you will have to help us. You posted a reply to a query from 2004. The chance of that person still being alive, still interested, and still using that e-mail address is small. You'd do better to start a new thread, and to give us some details. First, most of us won't reveal things about living people, if we can help it. Anyone in the world, including all those internet scam artists in Nigeria, can read this board, and if they knew details (birth date and place, for instance) about you, or your parents, or your grandparents, they might use those facts to steal money from you, your friends, and your relatives. I found this in a collection on Ancestry.com: U.S. Phone and Address Directories, 1993-2002 Name: W R (Butch) Cady Residence: 1997 - Columbia Falls, Montana You knew him as Butch, but his legal name is what would be on his census entries, marriage license, birth certificate, obituary and so forth. "W R" isn't very helpful, and the only Cady in Flathead County in the 1940 census is a William J, born about 1878, so, unless your grandfather lived to be 119 years old - or the family kept the phone under his name - that isn't him. That brings up a second point; we usually write towns as town, county, state: Columbia Falls, Flathead, Montana That helps when there are two or more towns of the same name in a state. (Arkansas, Georgia and Michigan all have 4 towns named "Lakeside".) It also helps when they didn't really live in the town, but went into it for supplies every two weeks. Please start a new thread. If your grandfather "Butch" has passed on, ask about him; if not, ask him who his parents were and ask about them. The more of these facts you can provide, the better a chance you have of getting some good replies: Name (maiden name for women) Birth date or date estimate (even a decade helps) Birth place (town, COUNTY, state) Marriage date or date estimate (even a decade helps) Marriage place (town, COUNTY, state) Spouse's name (maiden name for women) (All spouses, dates and places, if multiple marriages) Death date or date estimate (even a decade helps) Death place (town, COUNTY, state) If you want even more advice, plus a subtle joke, http://www.tedpack.org/goodpost.html has it.
