I never paid attention to that field before, but my dad's 1987 certificate has the cryptic entry "553.01" in box 19b which appears to be related to his Residence at time of death. Going back to his brother's death in 1973, box 19b is relative to Place of Death and titled "Inside City Corporate Limits / Specify Yes or No." there is a similar box, 18c, related to Residence that has the same heading. Then looking at my aunt's 1993 certificate, box 19b relates to Place of Death and is titled "If Hospital, Specify One: IP, ER/OP, DOA" Going 'way back to my ex-wife's father's death in 1984, box 19b relates to Residence at time of death and is coded "710", which is a code I'm familiar with as designating the city of Richmond - 7 for Contra Costa County (7th in an alphabetical list of California counties) and 10 for Richmond, 10th city on an alphabetical list when the system was set up. (I worked for a while for the City of San Pablo designated as 711). So all of this doesn't really answer the question, but my best guess is that the number is a State statistics gathering code to define a place or the nature of the place, or both, where the decedent lived and/or died. Hope this helps - Anyone out there know for sure?
