About 15 youngsters from the Concord area were in the surf about 1 p.m. yesterday when the wave hit with sudden fury, sending the boys and girls sprawling. Then they were caught in the outbound current and were swept swiftly out to sea, some as far as 200 feet from shore. Some of the children managed to make it back on their own. Others were helped to shore by rescuers. One of those pulled from the water was the drowning victim, Kathleen Jones. Witnesses said Kathleen, who did not know how to swim, was standing in waist-deep water in the midst of the group when the big breaker hit. Kathleen and the others were pulled out of the water within minutes. A bystander Edward Warner of San Francisco, and a physician, Dr. Keith Brownsberger of Palo Alto, worked over the girl for 45 minutes to no avail. They tried various methods of resuscitation, including mouth to mouth and external heart massage. After determining that the girl was dead, Dr. Brownsberger remained on the beach, making sure that all of the other victims were all rights. "We're luck four or five of them didn't drown," one deputy sheriff said. Kathleen, daughter of Mr and Mrs. E.G. Jones of Pleasant Hill, was with a group of youngsters from Creighton High school in Concord who were spending the day at the beach. "They were in the water about waist deep," said one of their chaperones, Mrs. Leonard Bussey of Concord, "and suddenly they were struggling. The water looked very rough, too. We couldn't hear their cries for help because of the noise of the surf." Her husband plunged into the water and rescued their daughter, Paula, 16, and another girl. Others ran from the beach into the water to help in the rescue effort, which was led by State Park Ranger James Hibbard, Reserve Sheriff's Deputies, Ted Ward and Paul Terry, and life-guard Herman Fruchtenicht. Ropes were used in getting the victims back to shore. Kathleen was taken out of the water by three teen-age boys.
