    1. [CAContraCosta] Senate Bill 2039 - OPPOSE the destruction of two historic cemeteries
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Dear Senator Fitzgerald: As you know, Senate Bill 2039 for approval to expand O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, will also approve the destruction of two historic cemeteries known as St. John' Church Cemetery and the Methodist cemetery known as Rest Haven. I applaud your efforts to help save these places of eternal rest from the horrendous task of relocation that will disrupt that rest. I am a resident of California. My family came here in 1850 with the Gold Rush. They came here from Illinois. California also seems to believe that eternal rest is not truly eternal for, in the past several years, many cemeteries have been destroyed or adversely impacted by projects of modern devise. Much of the nation, as a whole, seems to be experiencing the same dilemma, as is apparent by emails and postings to the internet. In 1961, the California Appellate Court ruled against the Superior Court, the California Dept. of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration in their efforts to approve the eminent domain taking of a portion of Eden Memorial Park Cemetery for the construction of the Santa Monica freeway in Los Angeles County. The Court ruled that a highway served no better public purpose than a cemetery. I would opine the same should apply to the expansion of the airport. On September 11th, 2001, the families of over 2,800 people lost loved ones in the worst attack the nation has ever known. Those families, Senator Fitzgerald, will never have a grave to visit to help them through their loss. In years to come, those families cannot take the next generation of their family to visit grandparents those children will never know. September 11th stole more than just their lives. It stole the tangible evidence of their very existence. That, Senator Fitzgerald, is what cemeteries are all about. Cemeteries are not just for the dead. They are for the living; so that we may always have a place to visit, to "talk" with our deceased loved ones, to share our happiness and our sorrows, and to continue the memories of those who have been lost to us. Senate Bill 2039, will not only cause the destruction of St. John's and Rest Haven, but will cause untold emotional anguish for the many living descendants of those persons now buried there. I would encourage you to continue your discourse regarding the adversity this expansion plan will thrust upon the dead and the living. This nation cannot continue to thrust aside the last homes of our nation's pioneering citizenry as if their value is less in death than it was in life. Respectfully, Sue Silver, President El Dorado County Pioneer Cemeteries Commission a California 501(3)(c) Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation 2551 Deer Trail Lane Cameron Park, CA 95682 (530) 676-2889 Email: ssilver1951@jps.net Member, California Historic Cemetery Alliance Sexton, El Dorado Cemetery (est. 1849), El Dorado Co., California

    1. [CAContraCosta] H.H. Bancroft interviews of Californion's to be on the Web.
    2. George Rushton
    3. I learned last week that the interviews that H.H. Bancroft, that he had done of the Californion's, and that are in the Bancroft Library collection, will be on the web. The Bancroft Library, is starting, I repeat THEY ARE JUST STARTING TO WORK ON THIS. They are planning to digitalize the copies of the interviews that they have so that they then can put them on their web site. I believe this will included the 5 volumes of the History of California, that General Vallejo, wrote and then gave to H.H. Bancroft, with the understanding that they would be published, and they were not. For most if not all, none of these have been published in full. They were used in bit and pieces in the different books that Bancroft published. So when this happens, it will great to read their side of the story, for I heard what General Vallejo, sister felt about the way the man who were in the "Bear Flag Revolt" behaved, to her and other people. She did not think very highly of them, actually she felt they were not much better than savages. So I it keep you up to date on this project. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Jones, Seeley Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2V.2ADI/200 Message Board Post: Coastside Drama; Girl, 13, Drowns, 10 Others Saved A 13 year-old East Bay girl downed yesterday when a big wave struck San Gregorio Beach but thanks to the heroic efforts of a number of people, 10 others in her group were saved. About 15 youngsters from the Concord area were in the surf about 1 p.m. yesterday when the wave hit with sudden fury, sending the boys and girls sprawling. Then they were caught in the outbound current and were swept swiftly out to sea, some as far as 200 feet from shore. Some of the children managed to make it back on their own. Others were helped to shore by rescuers. One of those pulled from the water was the drowning victim, Kathleen Jones. Witnesses said Kathleen, who did not know how to swim, was standing in waist-deep water in the midst of the group when the big breaker hit. Kathleen and the others were pulled out of the water within minutes. A bystander Edward Warner of San Francisco, and a physician, Dr. Keith Brownsberger of Palo Alto, worked over the girl for 45 minutes to no avail. They tried various methods of resuscitation, including mouth to mouth and external heart massage. After determining that the girl was dead, Dr. Brownsberger remained on the beach, making sure that all of the other victims were all rights. "We're luck four or five of them didn't drown," one deputy sheriff said. Kathleen, daughter of Mr and Mrs. E.G. Jones of Pleasant Hill, was with a group of youngsters from Creighton High school in Concord who were spending the day at the beach. "They were in the water about waist deep," said one of their chaperones, Mrs. Leonard Bussey of Concord, "and suddenly they were struggling. The water looked very rough, too. We couldn't hear their cries for help because of the noise of the surf." Her husband plunged into the water and rescued their daughter, Paula, 16, and another girl. Others ran from the beach into the water to help in the rescue effort, which was led by State Park Ranger James Hibbard, Reserve Sheriff's Deputies, Ted Ward and Paul Terry, and life-guard Herman Fruchtenicht. Ropes were used in getting the victims back to shore. Kathleen was taken out of the water by three teen-age boys. San Mateo Times, Front Page, Monday, July 1, 1963 ~~~~~~~ Nita Jones Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Pleasant Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church, Pleasant Hill, for Nita Kathleen (Kathy) Jones, 12, who died Sunday. Burial was in Oakmont Memorial Park. Directing services was the San Ramon Valley Chapel, Danville. 3. Eileen, Glad to help!! I grew up in Antioch and Oakley, Brentwood, Byron were all part of my stomping grounds. My family has been there for many, many generations. I live in San Luis Obispo now, but my family is still in Antioch. So if you need some additional info (ie names, addresses, phone numbers) let me know. I can e-mail them for info. I also travel up there to visit a couple times a year. As for the helping, I think that's the greatest part of geneaolgy on-line. If it were not for the wonderful volunteers passing along even the slightest bit of information, I wouldn't have half the information I do today.
