    1. [CAContraCosta] California Legislative Amendment re: Vital Statistics Access
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Hello, I sent an email out to this list about a week or so ago about attempting to get an amendment to last year's SB 1614 (Speirs) that will limit access to vital records in California beginning January 1, 2002. I have gotten some good responses and offers of assistance to try to get some modifications to the upcoming limitations. We have an attorney willing to work Pro Bono with the mechanics of the language for an amendment, and will be conferring on that on January 7th. Those of us working on the foundation of this amendment are not trying to overturn SB 1614 altogether, as we just don't feel that will be successful. We are trying to work with the framework and intent of SB 1614, but not to the severity of it. We are presently planning to exempt birth and death records of a certain age. For example, 80 years on birth records and 50 years on death records. (We haven't concluded the exact age of the exemptions we'll request.) We would like to hear from others as to suggestions relative to exemptions of records that may be more fully and readily accessible AND vitals indices that will be permissible for online access. Please send them to me at ssilver1951@jps.net and I will compile the responses for the group. If anyone else has begun to work on a project of this type, we would like to know that also. Perhaps there is a way to work together toward something better than SB 1614 has left us with. Sincerest thanks, Sue Silver, President El Dorado County Pioneer Cemeteries Commission (a non-profit corporation)

    1. [CAContraCosta] Re: [CASANFRA] new laws regarding birth/death information
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Ron, I have communicated with the El Dorado County Recorder who queried some of his associates. They have no objection to an amendment allowing records to be viewed and shared similar to the time delay for the US Census. However, they would like someone else to take the lead to obtain such an amendment. I believe from what he indicated, the County Recorders' Association (?) would support it. I worked hard to try to defeat this bill because of the work I do trying to identify who died and was buried in which of our multiple cemeteries in this county. The online index has been a treasure for that work. I believe I may be able to persuade a legislator to introduce a bill for such an amendment, but I think we'd have to submit draft language and a statement of the purpose of such an amendment. Anyone interested in getting together for such a purpose? 1. [CAContraCosta] Curtis “Curt” R. ACREDOLO (1947-2002) (obit.)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: ACREDOLO, EVANS, McGRANAHAN, HOBBS, FITTERER, POE Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2V.2ADI/277 Message Board Post: Curtis “Curt” R. Acredolo Curt Acredolo died peacefully with his family and loving partner at his side on Dec. 9, 2002, at the UC Davis Medical Center after a long and valiant battle against cancer. He was 55. Born on June 9, 1947, in Richmond, he grew up in El Sobrante, received his bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley (Phi Beta Kappa) and his Ph.D. in child development from the prestigious Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota. While in graduate school, he dealt courageously with Hodgkin's disease, winning a 30-year respite before the long-term consequences of the chemotherapy resulted in a second, ultimately unsuccessful battle against bladder cancer. In 1976, he and his former wife and good friend, Linda Acredolo, moved to Davis where he joined the human and community development department at UC Davis, eventually moving into the position of associate adjunct professor. His research interests were diverse, including developmental changes in children's coping skills and their understanding of logical principles. In addition, he was highly appreciated by UC Davis administrators, faculty, staff, and students for his knowledge of research methods and statistics, and his cheerful willingness to help no matter how na•ve the question. Perhaps his most lasting legacy to the university, however, was as teacher and mentor to undergraduate and graduate students. It was in the classroom that his compassion, humor and intellect made their biggest impression, and his family has been very comforted by the outpouring of support from those whose lives he touched. In 1989, he began applying his research skills to issues of great social significance, first as co-founder with Susan Berman of a research and marketing company called ImageResearch (now ImpactResearch), and in 1996 as founder of a similar company called Zetetic Associates. By helping agencies such as the California Department of Social Services evaluate and refine their programs, he had a significant effect on a diverse range of issues, including foster care, homelessness, immunization, breastfeeding, AIDS, tobacco education, Early Head Start, and domestic violence. In doing so, he also demonstrated how research in the social sciences can -- and should -- inform policy. His death has brought particular grief to his two children, Kate Acredolo of Sacramento and Kai Acredolo of Davis. He is also remembered with great love and admiration by his parents, Theo Evans of Napa and Harry Acredolo of El Sobrante; his brother, Brad Acredolo of Napa; and his devoted partner, Gale McGranahan of Davis. Among the countless others who will miss him are his stepmother, Winnie Hobbs Acredolo; his aunt, Morna Fitterer of Palm Desert; his sister-in-law, Rebecca Acredolo, and niece and nephew, Elise and Ian Acredolo, all of Oakland; as well as numerous other aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Bud Evans, and his grandparents, Earnest and Eula Poe. Over the years, his greatest love apart from his children was for the wilderness, especially the grand vistas of Yosemite. In times of stress he inevitably found solace in the peace and enduring beauty of the high country, and in times of joy he found great satisfaction in helping his children, family and friends discover all that the wilderness has to offer. In keeping with his passion for nature, the family suggests that those wishing to make memorial contributions consider The Wilderness Society, P.O. Box 29241, San Francisco, CA 94129. At his request, no services will be held. Family and friends will be advised as plans for a tribute develop. Maritime training ship Golden Bear is still tied up at Morrow Cove on Carquinez Straight near the north end of the bridge. It made quite a showing in San Francisco Bay during Fleet Week in October. If you find it, I'd be interested in hearing about it. I can't for the life of me figure out what it would've been for. No Heinz factory around there that I can think of. Robert
