Hi everyone Some of you may get this more than once, as it's going to many lists, sorry. Stockton Record 23 January 1988 Front Page X-RAY URNS ITS SPOT Coroner can use space by Edie Lau The Stockton Record Four thousand eight hundred (4,800) urns containing the ashes of people long dead should be removed from the county morgue and buried. That's the recomendation of the San Joaquin County Grand Jury, in a report released Friday. The remains were left from the days when the building was used as a county crematorium. The jurors said the copper urns, on shelves in a locked room, are taking up valuable building space. "The Sheriff's Office is not in the cemetery business and the urns should be removed." the jury wrote. They said relocating the urns would cost about $8,400. Sheriff Coroner John Zunino and County Administrator David D. Rowlands, Jr. agreed that acting on the grand jury's suggestion won't be hard. "What they idenified makes goosd sense" Rolands said "Money is not the issue" he added "It's just a matter of treating the remains with dignity." Aside from the urn problem, the jurors had good things to say about the coroner's operation, calling it "very efficient and well managed." They said the staff was "well informed" and "compassionate." and the records "well maintained and readily available." The county morgue has been housed in a bu9lding behind San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp since 1980. For 50 years before, the building was a crematorium operated by the hospital. According to the jurors report, some of the urns have been stored there more than 50 years. In the last decade only two urns have been claimed by relatives. It's unclear why so many remains went unclaimed. The urns are under the control of the county hospital (San Joaquin General Hospital [mc]). The space taken up by the urns, about a quarter of the building, could better be used by the coroner, ther jurors said. For example, the x-ray machine is in a refrigerated room sometimes used to store bodies awaiting autopsy. The corpses have a foul odor that can make the x-ray technician's enviroment most unpleasant. The x-ray machine could be moved to where the urns are now, jurors said. The morgue also lacks space for drying bloody or contaminated clothing that must be kept as evidence. Baxter Dunn, captain of the coroner's division, said investigating officers are forced to take the wet clothing to other buildings. The practice is potentially dangerous, given the types of diseases -- such as hepatitis and AIDS, that are spread through blood. The county already faces the task of exhuming about 40 bodies from an unmarked pauper's cemetery near the county hospital. The cemetery is in the middle of the site for a new jail. "Maybe we can make this one project." Rowlands said. ****** There is a large photo showing Gordon King of SJCounty Hospital inspecting copper boxes containing cremated remains, some 50 years old. This is dated 1988, two years before we moved back here from Washington State, so I don't have any rememberance of what happened. Does anyone remember these urns being moved? Were they just disposed of? Could this be what became of State hospital inmates after the State Hospital quit burying/cremating people themselves? If you have an ancestor who died after 1920 or so... and you can't find them... this may be something to check. >Hi all; >Time for our weekly update on the project. I think we are still sane. We want to thank all those that have made donations to the project. They are GREATLY appreciated and much needed. > >We now have over 80 transcriptionists. They are typing as fast as the records are coming in the door. It definitely has kept Laura, Steve and I busy staying on top of everything. This project is moving so much faster than we ever dreamed. We could not do it without all of those transcriptionists, volunteers and my wonderful #2s, Steve and Laura. > >For those of you who are reading this update for the first time, this is the online pre-1905 death records for all counties in California. Later, we hope to do the marriages and births, but right now, our goal is to complete the deaths. > >We have had several people that have emailed me with the wonderful stories of finding relatives on the lists...some having searched for several years for death dates of ancestors. It is really fantastic to get these stories and makes it worth all the work that is entailed in this project. We have shared some of them with all the volunteers so that they can appreciate them as well. Thank you to those of you that have shared your stories. > >We currently have the following counties distributed and in transcription: > >San Bernardino County Book Two >Los Angeles County, Books One, Two, Three, Four, Five and Six >Marin County Book Two >Colusa County Book Two >Humboldt County Book One and Two >Butte County Book Two >Mendocino County >San Luis Obispo >Placer County >El Dorado County >Amador County >Nevada County >Klamath County >Mariposa County >City of Oakland >San Benito County >Siskiyou County >Kern County > > >The website address is: >http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 > >We have the following already online: > >Butte County Book One >Colusa County Book One >Madera County >Marin County Book One >Riverside County >San Bernardino County Book One >San Diego County > >The following counties are on the verge of being placed online and should be online really soon: > >San Bernardino County Book Two >Colusa County Book Two >Marin County Book Two >Mendocino County > >We have received funding for the following counties which have been ordered and should be in transcription phase soon: > >Modoc County >Shasta County > >Undesignated donations are currently being collected for San Francisco County which is a very large number of files. We pay about .35 - .50 per page of about 40 names for the death registers. When you calculate how many records are in a given county, you can easily see the costs factors involved. We need all the help we can get. We have some people who are sponsoring whole counties and we have others sending small checks to help. Every little bit helps and all is greatly appreciated. ALSO, postage to get the files to the transcribers is wonderful. Each packet that we send out to be transcribed averages about $1.25 in postage. This adds up to alot of postage. We have sent out over 100 packets. Please send donations to me. I am keeping accountings of all the funds for those that have any questions. These records are updated daily. We are still in the red, although, thanks to the donations received to date, there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. > >Based on the information that we have received from those that have responded to previous updates, we will be making CDs of the information that we have. Although we do not know yet, the cost for these CDs, the sale of these will be helping to fund future counties and records. We, as yet, have not determined how many counties or whether by region or alphabetically they will be placed on the CDs. This is still in the determination phase. > >I have received hundreds of emails from those that want information or just to say thank you for the project. Marisa, Thank you for sending the information. Originally, I had been told that Anna had married Michael O'Brien first (IRE>NY) then John Kelley in San Francisco. However, I was puzzled by the fact that Jane (you have her listed as Jennie) looked substancially older than her O'Brien siblings in all the photographs I have. If your information is correct and she was married to John Kelley who died in NY then married (Mike?)O'Brien, this would explain why I have had one heck of a time finding John Kelley in San Francisco...hmmmm...On the other hand, Jane was born in California....interesting twist! However, I do have a picture of Anna Dowd(Doud) , Jane (Rodgers), Jane's son John Rodgers, and a man listed as "John Kelley" taken in Marin County, CA in 1913 (I think that's the date on the back, I would have to double check to be sure). So, it sounds like this John Kelley in the picture might be her older brother. I believe at least one of the Kelley brothers married and had children. I have another photograph that my grandmother identified as a John Kelley also. In the picture he is holding a violin. My grandmother said he was quite good and had played professionally somewhere in the Bay Area. As for D.L. Welty, this person submitted information on a Jane Sara Kelley Rodgers to the Native Daughters of the Golden West Pioneer Roster. He/she listed the source of information as a paper on "Early Kelley Family History". I figured he/she had to related in some way, and I would like to find out what other Kelley history they might be willing to share. Christine
>>Hi all; >>Things have been really going rapidly with the project. It is hard to believe that we have only been working on the majority of the project since the first of the year. I am so impressed with all the volunteers and donors for this project. They have been wonderful. >> >>We currently have Riverside and Madera counties online. We will momentarily have Book one of Butte County, Book one of San Bernardino County and all of San Diego County online. That will all occur this week. Steve has put contrasting colors on the county names that are online so they are easier to find. Just click on the county name and it will come up. The information is listed in the same order as in the death registers that we transcribe from. >> >>Several people have asked about what some of the status notes in the center column of the first page mean. Thought I would explain. >> >>Transcription Phase means we are currently transcribing those counties. We currently have more than 60 transcribers working on the project, so there are several counties in the process. I still have to admit that there are more working in Los Angeles County than any other because there are so many records for that county. We are anxious to get this online since so few online projects are available for the Los Angeles area. >> >>Records Available - Pending Funding means just that. We have received notification that we can get the records, but we need to acquire the funds to copy them. This is our largest expense for the project. >> >>Pending Funding alone means that we have ordered the files on a promise of funding from a person or organization and some we are hoping for funding before the records get here. These are ordered and in the process of being copied for us but we desperately need monies to cover these expenses. This is especially true of the San Francisco records as it is even larger than the Los Angeles County records. We need donations to help us get these copied. >> >>Pending Info on Availability means that we have not yet received word if we can get the records. You will notice there are fewer and fewer of these as you go to the website. Now we just need the funding to get copies once they are available. >> >>What we do when we are ready for a county, we order the files, then make a copy of what is sent. This way we have two copies. One set to distribute and the master copy. This saves us from having to re-order files when the post office loses a batch. We can just copy from our masters. They have managed to lose two batches so far out of the 80+ batches that we have sent out to transcriptionists. When we get the batches back from the transcriptionists, they are then set aside until a full Book or county is complete. They are then processed to go online. We currently have the following counties distributed and in transcription. If there are only one or two trancribers, we have listed their name here as well: >> >> San Bernardino Book Two >> Los Angeles Book One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six >> Marin Book One and Two Betty Vickroy >> Colusa Book One and Two Sue Wood and Justina Cook >> Humboldt Book One and Two >> Butte Book Two Chuck and Carol Stewart >> >>Other counties in the transcription phase are: >> >> Mendocino Phil Carnahan >> San Luis Obispo Barbara Erden >> Placer Jacqui Marcela >> Klamath Laura Melton >> Mariposa Steven Miller >> City of Oakland George Rushton >> San Benito Dee Sardoch >> Siskiyou Laura Melton >> >>We also have other counties where digital photos of the records are being taken to transcribe from. This saves us in the expense category and is greatly appreciated of the people doing this huge project. >> >>Several people have asked to transcribe designated counties only. Although this can be arranged, this is difficult on us. We do the best we can. Some of our transcibers are actually going to the recorder's offices and transcribing from the original records on their laptops. These people need extra praise for not only transcribing, but for taking the time to drive there and to be limited by the hours of the government offices. >> >>DONATIONS: Desperately needed. We pay about .35 per page of about 40 names for the indexes. Some records cost a little more. When we are dealing with a county like Los Angeles with over 40,000 names, you can see the cost factor go up. Now we would like to get San Francisco started and that is even more. How much more, we do not know yet, but that was a heavily populated area during the mid 1800s to 1905. For this reason, we need all the help we can get. We have some people that are sponsoring whole counties and we have others sending small checks to help. All is appreciated. ALSO, postage to get the files to the transcribers is greatly appreciated. Each packet that we send out to be transcribed averages about $1.25 in postage. We have sent out over 80 at this point. That is a lot of postage. We need your help, no matter how much. Please send donations to me. It will be greatly appreciated. >> >>One other item that we are going to throw out for discussion. We have thought about taking the completed records and placing the information on CD and selling those CDs to help finance the project. We have not determined price or availability at this point, but would like to know if something like this would be of interest to those of you out there doing research. The same info would be online, but some people would like these to donate to genealogical societies, libraries etc. Funds would cover costs and add to the project income to finance future counties. Don't forget that when we are finished with the deaths, we are hoping to go to marriage and birth records. Your opinion on this is greatly appreciated. >> >>I would like to take a couple lines to thank Steve Melton for his undying help in getting this project online. He had his hard drive go down and need replaced as well as some other minor computer problems in the middle of setting up and uploading the webpage. We could not do it without him and you are GREATLY appreciated. Laura, who has been serving his meals in front of the computer deserves a vote of thanks on this as well. She is also my assistant coordinator with Steve and keeps us technically on our toes and running. >> >>A special thanks to Ken Doig who donated the previously transcribed Madera County death records to the site. Ken is the moderator for the Madera County USGenWeb Project. >> >>For those of you who have missed previous updates, this is the pre-1905 records of deaths that are currently being put on line at: >> http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 >> >>Thanks for all your help and support. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions regarding the site, info, or helping. Till next week..... >> >>Donna Bradley >>Pre-1905 Project Coordinator >>P. O. KELLEY, DOWD, O'BRIEN, RODGERS, WELTY I am serching for information on a Kelley family in the San Francisco Bay Area beginning about 1850 or possibly earlier. John Kelley married Anna Dowd O'Brien. Anna had several O'Brien children from her first marriage, and at least three children that I know of from her marriage to John Kelley. Two sons, John and Rowley, and one daughter Jane Sara (nicknamed Jennie). Jane married M.S. Rodgers. They had one son John (Jack) Rodgers. Jane Sara Kelley Rodgers is listed in the Native Daughters of the Goldren West's Pioneer Roster. The limited information was submitted by D.L. Welty from Alamo, CA, who listed the source of information as a paper written on the early family history of the Kelley family. I am desparately searching for additional information on this Kelley family or possible links / contacts for the Welty family with the Kelley family history. I have hit the proverbial brick wall. I also have pictures of all of the Dowd, O'Brien, Kelley, Rodgers clan that I would be happy to scan and share. Thank you in advavnce for any time and/or assistance you have to offer!
