In a letter from F. Adele Bennett, from Dec. 12, 1929, from Richmond CA, sent to my grandfather, Robert Buchanan Curtis, Staten Island NY she writes: "Alfred is to take his place as head of the Richmond M. Kinley Lodge of Masons, Dec. 19" She asks my grandfather to "write him a loving brotherly letter" congratulating him on this position but not to send it home, but to "Certainteed Products Corporation"Bin-4. I have two questions. Are there Mason records accessible to me to find out who this Alfred is? and has anyone heard of this company? My grandfather was sent to CA in 1886 as an orphan. This F. Adele Bennett signed the letter as Your Other Mother, F. Adele Bennett. If I can find out who Alfred is I may be able to find out who F. Adele is and figure out why Robert was sent to CA while he had relatives in CT and NY! Thank you, Linda

John and Nora had two children who survived to adulthood - John R Conway b. in Aug of 1868 in Danville, Contra Costa Co., CA, died Sept 22 1943 in Alameda Co. and Mary Teresa Conway born Dec 25 1870 also in Danville, died May 25, 1952 in Alameda Co., CA. I don't know if either John or Mary had any children, and haven't tracked down thier obits or death certs yet, but I am hoping to find descendants of this family as we are doubly related. First I want to apology, if you get this on multiple lists, but felt the more people that know the better. I found this in the February issue of the "California Monthly", the magazine of the California Alumni Association. If you or a family member when to U.C. Berkeley, "CAL", in the 1950's there is a good chance that you or they had a photo taken by Perry Ives, who had a studio near Sather Gate in the 1950's, before the construction of the Student Union eliminated that block of Telegraph Avenue. Perry mostly photographed Cal students and friends, many of whom were sorority and fraternity members. Though Perry has long since retired from photography and lives in Denver, his retoucher and close friend Bill Brain of Pleasant Hill is offering to distribute the negatives to former customers or others who might be interested. Unclaimed negatives will destroyed in the summer of 2002. Contact Bill at (925) 686-2031 or e-mail Bfbrain@aol.com So who knows maybe he has a old photo of you or a family member, but remember I DO NOT ANY THING MORE THAT THIS, ABOUT THE PHOTOS. Surnames: Garrison Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2V.2ADI/181 Message Board Post: I need help identifying an old photograph. Not my relative, but found among a deceased relatives photographs. It is of a young man (teens or early twenties) in a military type uniform with CAC on the collar. It has been suggested that this might stand for Clemson Agricultural College (South Carolina). The photography studio was in Anderson, SC. The inscription on the photograph says "William L. Garrison - 1921." From this I arrive at a likely birth year of 1900 to 1905, but might be off by several years. The SSDI lists a William L. Garrison born 28 February 1900 who died 7 December 1987 with a last residence of Concord, California. Rootsweb's California Death Records shows this same individual as William Lloyd Garrison born in MN on 5 May 1901 (mother's maiden name - Priest). A likely match, but it could just be coincidence. Does this sound familiar; is this your line? I would love to share the photograph with any descendants. Anyone have access to an obituary for this guy? Drop me a note at ec821@hotmail.com if you have any ideas. Thanks, Edward Carter Murfreesboro, TN

>Hi all; >Weekly update time for the pre-1905 project. Thank you ever so much for your help. > >Secondly, I would like to thank all those that are volunteering on this project. We now have close to 100 persons volunteering in areas of acquiring records, transcribing records, working with county recorders, etc; then there is my #2s, Steve and Laura who have been indispensible in their undying work on the project, website and all the technical support they have given. This project would not be as far along as it is if it weren't for the two of them. We all owe them alot. > >Now, for what is happening on the project: > >We have acquired some of the records for San Francisco County. I have to admit that I was totally dumbfounded when I realized the number of records that are available for pre-1906 earthquake because I was under the impression that alot of the records were gone and there was very little available. This may be partially true in that alot of the records burned, but the records that I have just gotten access to have changed my mind on what is available. Let me explain. There are 6 microfilms of just death records that I have acquired. In those films are records of over 200,000 deaths in San Francisco County for the period of 1863-1903. That is more than in any other county in the state, and may be equivalent to all other counties combined. This is alot and will take some time and lots of donations to make all the copies. At 40 entries per page, that is over 5000 copies to be made at .35-.50 per page. That means the cost factor for San Francisco county alone will be in excess of $2000.00 and that is before postage costs to get these records to the transcribers. This means we will need lots of donations. This is where we scream HELP, HELP, HELP. We need your help on this. Donations are desperately needed. They can be sent to me at the address below. > >As far as the other counties are concerned, we will be doing them simultaneously to the time we are working on San Francisco. Although about 75% of our transcribers will be working San Francisco, the other 25% will be working on the other counties. We have had some people sponsor some counties and those copies will be made and transcribed. We have the Genealogical Society that will be working on Santa Barbara County. We have our precious Janie and Elaine who will be working Shasta County (in addition to others if needed). We have a husband-wife team doing Butte County, Beverly Stone working El Dorado County, Sharon Dulcich photoing and transcribing Kern County, although she will be getting some additional help in the transcription portion of this. Betty Vickroy has just finished Marin County and book two will be online, probably this week. Modoc County has been funded and will be in the transcription phase as soon as the records come in (they have been ordered). Jacqui Marcela is transcribing Placer County. Beverly Stone is working on accessing the Sacramento County Records; Dee Sardoch is currently transcribing San Benito County; Barbara Erden is transcribing San Luis Obispo; Laura Melton is transcribing Siskiyou County; Elvina Fernandez is working on acquiring the ordered Tulare County records which will be transcribed by her and the Sequoia Genealogical Society; Steven Miller is transcribing Mariposa County and on and on and on. Counties are going online within 7-10 days of completion of the transcription. We only started this project in January and already have all or part of 8 counties online. That means there are 51 more to be completed. > >For those of you that have read the "History of the Project" on the website, I would like to share this with you. Hi everyone: I spoke with a gentleman today who is connected with the county hospital in French Camp. He says there is a list of names, but hesitates to release them in whole. He will check for names (from about 1920-40 ), if you can provide a name and date. Need not be exact date.. but close, so he can check. Most were paupers, and families could not bury them.. why they ended up at county hospital & not rural cemetery, etc.. is not clear. He did agree that some could have been state hospital deaths, but is not certain, but the dates are right (after the State hospital abandoned the old cemeteries of their own). The 40 graves on the property were moved to Lodi Memorial Cemetery here in Lodi. ALL of these urns were left in the building at the county hospital. Someone intervened and it was decided to just leave them there. The county Hospital may have a list of names also, if you can prove your person died during that timeframe. I have a few death certificate copies that show County Hospital deaths, I am going to submit these names to Steve, to see if this is where they are (the few without burial information). If you have an ancestor who may have been sent to county hospital from another area due to lack of funds during the 1920-40 period, and you can't find a burial place... may want to see if they could be one of these urns. I don't have the hospital number in front of me, but you can get it online... they have a webpage.
