As many of you have noticed, there is a note on the website regarding some problems we were having with our tables. We have found a solution and Aaron, Steve and Laura are working on it as fast as they can, but these files are large and all have to be reformated and then uploaded again to the site. This is taking a little bit of time. Please be patient and it will be worth it. The new updated information will be not only Internet Explorer friendly, but Netscape friendly as well. I don't know about the WebTV situation yet. We will have to wait and see. > >In the meantime, the transcriptionists are working like little beavers on the continuation of the batches. We are going as fast as we can to get these online and cannot do lookups and maintain our current speed of work. We will NOT do lookups regardless of your reasoning. Please be patient. We are working as fast as our fingers will go. > >Some BAD NEWS.... It appears as if there are no records available for El Dorado County. Rumor has it that one of the employees ran off with the records and sold them, but we have no access to them. Also, these records were NOT filmed by the LDS church either so getting that won't work either. We had heard they were at the Huntington Library, but have learned that is not the case either. We may be able to get some records, but they will be minimal at this point in time. > >Some GOOD NEWS.... We have somebody checking into the availability of the Ventura County records and should know in the not too distant future what is going on here and if we can get access. Say lotsa prayers and keep your fingers crossed. These records are also NOT filmed by the LDS church either. > >Sooooo, as you can tell, with all these changes going on, life has definitely been hectic on the pre-1905 project. Keep an eye on the site to see the changes come about. When all is said and done with the upgrades, we will also have sources listed on the site for your reference. Just be patient. We are listening to you all and your comments...the fix-its just don't happen overnight. > >Donations to the project are still needed and can be sent to me at the address below. 2. Harry Snijder
    3. Hello everybody! I'm new to this list so I'll introduce myself. My name is Harry Snijder, 53 years young and living in The Netherlands. My interest in genealogy was aroused two years ago while visiting relatives in Alameda, CA, who wanted to know about their roots. Since then I was rather succesfull tracing them back till the mid-18th century. One of the people who married into my family has the name of Romaine, (also of Dutch descent, originally Romijn, settling at first in Fresno, about 1900's). On Rootsweb I found a William A. Romaine, having died in Contra Costa County in 1997, whose mother's surname was Klein, which coincides with the data I already had. So possibly I'm on the right track at last. My question is: Is there anyone on this list familiar with these names (Romaine, Romijn, Klein)? If so, please respond, so I can continue my (re)search! Greetings from Harry.

    2. >Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 19:32:06 -0800 >To: Transcriptionists >From: "Donna@MBS" <mbs@inland.net> >Subject: pre-1905 weekly update > >Hi all; >It's that time again...for another update on our progress. Lots of good things are happening. We have gotten funding for Alameda County from the Livermore - Amador Genealogical Society and they will be helping with transcription although we will be working on it as well. We have also gotten the balance of our funding for San Francisco County from a very generous man in Australia. Also appears as we may be able to trade some info on San Francisco with another genealogical society who has done some we haven't and vice versa. Things are jumpin'. > >We have gotten Lake County and Modoc County out for transcription, Kern County done and soon to be online and naturally much more of San Francisco scheduled to go online as soon as proofing, etc gets done. We have had some questions about Sacramento County getting online, which is in the near future, but we are at the funding stage there and would like to get some of those pending online. We have about a dozen counties where the records are ordered and over 20 counties with over 30 volumes being transcribed right now. We want to get some of those done before we get another big county going (I can't find room for more files on my desk at the moment). Santa Cruz County has been funded as well and other donations toward some of the other counties which are building up their totals to cover costs. All of you have been wonderful with your donations to keep this ball rolling. > >Modoc County was transcribed by a donor an just needs to be set in our template which is happening right now so that should be up rather fast as well. Del Norte County is going out to start transcription too. And, we will be finishing up some of the other batches that have been in transcription for awhile. To put it nicely, we are working on completing some counties to get them online. > >I have to admit that I never dreamed this would move along as rapidly as it has been going. We have been at this for only two and one half months and the progress is phenomenal when you think about it. I couldn't do it without all the donors (over 90) and all the volunteers (well over 100). They are all incredible and really staying on top of all this. Never in my wildest dreams did I realize the response I would get with my first email that said "HELP! HELP! HELP!", way back in the beginning of January. You are all really wonderful and very giving and helpful people out there. All the support is incredible and the "Found" stories keep rolling in. > >To maintain this speed though, I regret to inform you, we cannot do lookups during this process. Several have asked and I have had to turn you down. We are getting them all online as fast as our little ol' fingers will go, so please be patient. > >The website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905> has only been up for less than two months and we have had almost 7000 hits so far, so we must be sparking some interest there. Keep visiting. That is what it is there for. We will keep you updated as new areas are placed on the web. Please note that weekly, the site is updated by Steve (my hero and our computer guru) to keep you informed on the latest completed files as well as the status of all the areas we currently have "under constructions". And to keep our hero happy is our heroine, Laura who keeps all our transcribers "technically" up to snuff. A special thanks to all of you. > >Me...I just organize (or try to) all this hullaballoo, keep the books, order records and help our transcribers when they can't read some of the older, too dark or too light handwriting. You could say I am technically the "non-technical" side of the project. If you would like to help, email me. If you would like to send a donation, send it to me. If you have a question, ask me. I will do what I can or send you in the right direction. > >Soooooo, for now, that is about it. We are working and hopefully, you are enjoying. 1. [CACONTRA] Pre-1905 weekly update
    2. >Hi all; >Seems that our transcriptionists want San Francisco County done as much as the rest of us. Currently in Transcription is Vol. 1, 2, 3, M, and P is just going out the door. There seems to be much confusion as to what records we are using. Some of them are death registers (just like the other counties) and some of them are Mortuary Registers. The mortuary registers give the same info that the death registers do. All registers are for the "City and County of San Francisco". > >The other counties are moving right along as well. Several more counties have their records ordered and a few more are in transcription. We have some of the smaller counties getting transcribed while we are working on the larger ones. We have gotten book two of Los Angeles County online this week and hope to have more of it online shortly. For an update on what is happening for any given county, take a look at the website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905>. For those counties that are pending donations, look at the donor page and that will tell you which ones are open for sponsorship, funding and support. > >I would like to take a moment to thank the genealogical societies that are supporting us. Santa Barbara is funded and being transcribed by their genealogical society...all we had to do is supply the records for them. The Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society is funding and helping with the transcription in the Alameda County records. Those records have been ordered and should be in shortly. The Tehama County Gen. and Hist. Society has offered help in Tehema County and there are several others on the verge of coming through for their counties as well. > >For those of you that are considering volunteering for transcribing, there are a couple things that need to be understood. These records are over 100 years old and not always the easiest to read. They are hand written and some of them are in the older style of writing. This makes them more difficult. Also, some of the records don't copy really well. We do the best we can with what we have to make it easier. This is definitely a "Labor of Love" and those that are working on these deserve and extra pat on the back for what they are doing. Because some of the people have expected something simple to do, we have sent out some batches and then never heard from the volunteers again. If you volunteer and discover that you cannot follow through, this is not a problem, but please send the copies back to us as there are additional costs entailed in recopying the records. This can be saved. > >This is not to discourage those that wish to volunteer, but to educate them on what to expect. We have back up for what you cannot read and we help whenever we can or whenever you seem to be having a problem. Right now...we are lucky as some of the records (like the ones we are distributing right now) are extremely easy to read and transcribe. > >A special thanks goes to Steve Melton...our computer wiz, who has managed to stay on top of all the technical dealings with getting this online. He keeps the site updated weekly with periodic changes during the middle of that week. Steve, we love you and you are wonderful. > >Laura Melton, Steve's wife, has been keeping everything organized and sending out templates and instructions to all the new transcribers, as well as dealing with some of the other technical problems that have come up. In between reunions, baby showers and the like, we have managed to keep her pretty busy as well. Thank you Laura for all you do...which is way too much to even start to mention here. > >For all those that have helped to support this project, in addition to listing all of you on the donor page, I would like to say an additional "THANK YOU". Without you, this project could not come about. Between copies and postage, it is amazing how rapidly the costs add up. Donations can be sent to me. Full accountings are kept of all costs and income to the project. > >Well, will keep you updated on the new additions to the website as they come along. Thank you all for the good words, support and help. Till next week... > >Donna Bradley >Project Coordinator >P. O. Box 391368 >Anza, CA 92539-1368 > > >

    1. [CACONTRA] Pre-1905 Project Weekly Update
    2. Hi all; Time for our weekly "What's Happening" on the website. So here is what is going on: First of all, those that have WebTV have been having problems accessing the site as it is too wide for their set. We are aware of this, although there is nothing that we can do as the template and the amount of information on it are too wide. This is similar to the several other sites that you cannot access for the same reason. I apologize for this inconvenience, but there is no way to correct this. * * * * * Now for the good stuff... The following counties or partials have been completed: Butte Book One Colusa Book One and Two Los Angeles Book Two Madera Marin Book One and Two Mariposa Mendocino Riverside San Benito San Bernardino Book One San Diego The following Counties are in the transcriptions phase: Amador Butte Book Two Humboldt Kern Los Angeles Books One, Three, Four, Five and Six Nevada Orange Placer San Bernardino Book Two San Francisco Books One and Two San Luis Obispo Santa Barbara Siskiyou Sutter Tehama Tulare The counties that have been ordered are: Fresno Lake Modoc Shasta Yolo Yuba IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE COUNTY YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, GO TO THE WEBSITE AND THE FRONT PAGE WILL TELL YOU THE STATUS OF THAT COUNTY. * * * * * Several people have asked if we would do lookups. Unfortunately, our answer has to be no as the records are spread all over the US in various stages of transcription. Also, unfortunately, you will have to wait till they are online. The volunteers are typing as fast as their little fingers can go and we are getting the records online within days of completion of a book or county. Sorry, but you have waited this long, a little longer and you can look. * * * * * Speaking of volunteers, we have over 100 working on this project. Understand that these records are old (100+ years) and sometimes hard to read. Also understand that we think this project is really important because the records are only required to be kept from 1905 forward. Anything before that time can be gotten rid of WITHOUT NOTICE because they were not required. One we have them online, they cannot take them away from us and they are free for the looking. All of our volunteers are incredibly special people to help with this project and donate their time and efforts. Periodically there are a few that really stand out and I think they deserve special mention. First is Betty Vickroy. Betty must have the fastest fingers in town. She has completed six full batches and is still going. She has worked in San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles and Nevada counties, as well as typed ALL of Marin county. She is my "pinch hitter" when I only need one more batch in a county or when somebody has given up on trying to transcribe a certain batch. She is one incredible lady and GREATLY appreciated by all. We also have Sharon Dulcich, who not only got us access to Kern County records, but photo'd all of them and now is transcribing all of them. She deserves a definite extra pat on the back for all this effort that she has put forth. We have Dorothy Oksner, who not only helped to sponsor Santa Barbara County, but is coordinating the genealogical society there to do all the transcribing and staying on top of them all to help to make sure that all is going well. Thank you Dorothy for all you are doing. Beverly Stone has been working with El Dorado County, which she accessed the records for and is currently transcribing all by herself. She is also working with Sacramento county to get copies of those registers for us so that we can get those transcribed and online as well. Thank you Beverly for all your work. There are several others...including those who don't even live in California. We have transcribers in Washington, Nevada, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, Kansas, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Oregon and Louisiana. And we have received donations from all over the world for this project. We thank you all for your wonderful help and generous time. We are currently working with Richard Finn, President of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society to sponsor and transcribe the balance of the records for Alameda county. We hope this will turn out as well. * * * * * Donations for this project can be sent to the myself, the project coordinator at the address below. There is lots more to do and funding is required to cover the costs of copies of these records and postage to get the info to the transcriptionists. Your help, no matter how big or little, is desperately needed and incredibly appreciated. * * * * * For those of you that still do not know about the project, let me give you a brief rundown. We are working on getting all the records, from all counties, for the pre-1905 period online. We are currently working on the deaths and then will be working on the marriages and birth records. The website can be viewed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 We have been working on the project since the beginning of the year (just a little over two months) and have managed to get quite a bit done, thanks to all the donors and volunteer transcriptionists. If you think you can help, feel free to contact me by email. So....that is all for another week. Will keep you posted as new counties go online, etc. Till next week, Donna Bradley Project Coordinator Pre-1905 Project P. O.
