Antonio NICOLINI, an Italian aged 65 years, died at the home of B. CASINELLI at Jackson Gate on Monday of last week. NICOLINI had been a resident of the vicinity for about forty years, and was highly respected. J.J. EKEL, a Plymouth attorney got into a row during an aggravating contest at the ADAMS HOUSE, some two months ago, and took a shot at Henry PRITCHARD. At the preliminary examination last week he was held for trial on the charge of assault to kill. County Clerk CULBERT has installed a machine in his office which expedites the adding of columns of figures without the use of one's think tank. All you have to do is to touch a button and the machine registers the number touched and when you are through gives the total. It is said to be absolutely correct. (Isn't this a hoot?) Last Sunday a party of Sonora people thought they would take advantage of the beautiful blanket of white which covered the landscape and indulge in a sleigh ride. They reached Columbia without incident, where, while they visited friends, lent the sleigh to some of the young men that town, who hitched up a spirited team and proceeded to enjoy themselves. The result was a runaway and a smashup and the Sonora party came home in the stage (from Tuolumne Independent) The snow fall last week at Strawberry, above Sonora, amounted to six feet. The horses attached to the post of the Victoria Hotel at Sonora, ran away a week ago Sunday morning, and crashed into the glass front of TERRY'S plumbing establishment. The whole front of the place was smashed, but the horses were not injured. The driver escaped by jumping. The runaway was caused by snow balls thrown at the driver. (The following article about Mrs. Francesca ARAYA, my great-great-grandmother, is the reason I had a copy of this portion of the newspaper). A Few Items From West Point Two Funeral the Same Day From Same Church West Point..February 9, 1903..The sad funerals of Mrs. ARAYA and Ellra REED took place from the M.E. church at West Point Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of sympathizing friends. Mrs. ARAYA was an old resident of West Point and her death was not unexpected as she had been sick some time. She was 80 years old and leaves many relatives here to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother and grandmother. J.E. KING and his brother-in-law, Elmer JACOBS, returned from Stockton Saturday. Mr. KING was called to Stockton three weeks ago by the severe illness of his little son who was suffering with pneumonia. We are glad to say the the boy is well again. C.M. BURLESON and Will COOK of Mokelumne Hill visited relatives and friends here Saturday. James PORTEOUS of Paloma, with his bride visited West Point Tuesday. Mrs. PORTEOUS was formerly Miss Eva GREEN of Paloma. Jim PORTEOUS is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. PORTEOUS of this place. Mr. and Mrs. W. HERBERT and Mrs. Geo. PIERSON returned from Sacramento Friday where they had been on a visit to relatives and friends. Snowdrop. MILLINERY Miss A.E. HURLBUT will continue her millinery business for the coming season in the store of W.C. BAKER. Will visit San Andreas and Murphys about October 1st. Jackie in California kimmee@volcano.net
Have run into another section of newspaper that has lots of info, so am sending it along. J. Allen VITCH of the Dareen mines, Republic of Columbia, has been inspecting the various mines of the mother lode recently as the guest of Hon. E.C. VOOHIES, of Amador. Grant BOYD, an old employee of the Standard Electric Company, while working on the main pipe near Electra, on Wednesday of last week, slipped and fell, fracturing the knee-cap. He was taken to the Globe hotel in Jackson, where Dr. GALL attended to his wounded limb. Carlo SISCO, who was found near Lancha Plana, several weeks ago, in a demented condition, was sent to the Stockton Asylum last week by the Superior Court of Amador County. Tuolumne County Sheriff MUDDLE received another addition last week, when George L. ADAMS, who is acting as Sheriff, applied for his warrant. The County Auditor refused to issue the warrant by reason of having personal knowledge of a judgement of court declaring Wm.. SWEENEY the Sheriff of the county. ADAMS sued out a writ of mandate to compel the Auditor to issue the warrant. The County Government Act of 1901 raised the salary of several offers of Tuolumne county but on Monday of last week, when the officers came to draw their January warrants, Auditor DOYLE refused to recognize the new law, but drew the warrants under the old law. The Supervisors, under advice of the District Attorney, refused to allow claims of township officers based on the same ACT. An attempt was made one night last week to rob John TRIPLETT in front of JOHNSON & MABEY'S saloon of Tuolumne. James R. McCORMICK was arrested on the charge of committing the offense, and after a preliminary examination, before Justice AHERN, was bound over for trial. At the suggestion of Health Officer CONGDON, the schools of Jamestown and Stent have been closed indefinitely. Each place has a case of diphtheria, hence these precautions. The Julian school, has been temporarily closed on account of small pox. Cholera is making havoc among the swine herds in Mount Echo district, and Jackson Valley, says the Ione Echo. I am letting people know that a new County List for Genealogical Discussion & research has been started in California from among the lists created in July: CAALPINE [Alpine County]. I expect that as a rural county it may not be as active as some of the others in California, but I believe in time it can be very helpful. Subcribing is by sending an e-mail message with the word "subscribe" as the only word in the body of a message with no subject to: (mail mode): "caxxxxxx-l-request@rootsweb.com" (digest mode): "caxxxxxx-d-request@rootsweb.com" Posting queries is by subscribers is to: "caxxxxxx-l@rootsweb.com" where "caxxxxxx" is the list name ["caalpine"] I would like to announce the startup of this new list so that people with an interest in genealogy in Alpine County can be made aware of it. I hope that you can include a reference to it in th Alpine County GenWeb site. Thanks again. Sincerily, Edward, Sr. --
