My great aunt, Ida May CLOUGH, resided with them for a period of time during 1860. This intrigued me as I've been searching for information relating to the divorce of her parents, Orson CLOUGH (Pine Grove and Volcano, Amador, CA) and Julia MARSH-CLOUGH (Three Rivers, Tulare,CA). The divorce, birth of my great grandmother and Julia's subsequent remarriage all occurred within a short time in 1860. The following information was obtained from "The Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California 1854-1904" by Elsie Dixon. I have capitalized surnames for easier recognition. SURFACE I. Unknown SURFACE d. before family came to California (hac) m. Almira C. Unknown, milliner in Ione (C AC 1860 & 1870), who had Ida CLOUGH 6, b. Ill., in her home in 1860 (c) b. ca. 1809, KY (C AC 1870); 1813, VA (C AC 1860) Children: 1-2 John Whitten SURFACE (GRV AC 1867), who crossed the plains in 1852 with widowed mother, two brothers and two sisters. Arrived at Volcano in Sept. (hac) County Assessor in 1870. (c) He was, presumably, the J.W. SURFACE to whom Mary STILLWAGGON deeded an undivided one-half interest in the ne1/4 & s1/2 of nw1/4 and n1/2 of sw1/4, sec. 25, 8-10, 320 acs., (9-576; rec. 19 Feb., 1894) b. 28 Nov., 1833, Henry Co., Mo.
