Hi Jean: Sutter Hill is located just North of Jackson and South of Sutter Creek on highway 49. the towns of Jackson and Sutter Creek are 2 miles apart on highway 49. Heading North it goes like this Jackson, Martell, Sutter Hill, Sutter Creek. Sutter Hill is not incorporated just a name for an area on highway 49 where it crosses the Ridge Road. The people who live at Sutter Hill have Sutter Creek for their post office address. Everyone who lives at Martell has Jackson for their post office address. James Vicini probably died at Sutter Hill and it was reported in the Stockton Independent. The local newspaper did not report all of the births, marriages, or deaths which occurred. Very few Italians were mentioned in it. Hope this helps with your question. Carol in Reno
I have obit that says: Vicini...On Sutter Hill, Aug. 28, 1903, James Vicini, brother of GB Vicini. Anative of Italy, aged 65 years. This obit was in the Stockton Independent, Sept. 13, 1903. Question: did he die in Stockton? and buried in Sutter Creek? What does Sutter Hill mean? Jean Hehn

It would appear that genealogists are not the only unhappy members of the public when it comes to lack of strong legislation to protect the public's right to know. On October 1 in the Sacramento Bee, columnist Marjie Lundstron discussed a new statewide survey's conclusion that in our Golden State, 'runarounds are routine and bureaucratic stonewalling is the name of the game.' The survey, taken by the California First Amendment Coalition and the Society of Professional Journalists, audited public agencies to see if they really did release public records to the public. In 77% of the cases, police, sheriffs, cities and schools turned down verbal requests for records which are classed as public records. In cases where written requests were sent, 53% were denied. The point of the column is not lost on genealogist, I get many calls from researchers asking what they can do to force the issue of obtaining public records in their counties. If Governor Davis did not sign Senator Sher's SB2027, and appears he did not, it will be the second time it has gone down to defeat. Last year he vetoed a similar bill. But, the previous Governor did not sign a similar bill by Senator Kopp, twice. Who do they work for, the public or the bureaucrats? In spite of all the hard work and hundreds of letters, calls and Emails, Governor Davis vetoed AB1779 which would have established the California Historic Cemetery Commission. His reasons have not yet been published. This is very sad news. He did sign Assemblyman Cox's AB2580 which, if enforced, should help cut down on vandalism in cemeteries and places of worship. Assemblyman Shelley's AB2799 was signed. It requires government agencies to furnish public records in any format used within their agency. As was Senator Peace's Privacy bill SB129. We will follow this as it progresses. You may recall last year, SB927 by Senator McPherson, called the California Newspaper Project, would furnish money for the University of California to identify and preserve the state's history as reflected in its newspapers, and mandate an appropriation of $1,200,000 be allocated from the year 2000 to 2004 from the General Fund to match a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Project will provide a union listing of all newspapers published in California, and the location of repositories online. Newspaper collections that have never been filmed, both public and private can be microfilmed. A complete set would be housed at the CA State Library for interlibrary loans. Additional copies would be furnished to the libraries of origin. The bill was vetoed last year, but the Governor stated that he would make money available for the project in the 2000-2001 budget. I just found out last week that he did allot the money, and the University has received the funding to proceed with the project. Well, the legislature is finished for this year, so it is unlikely that I will have reports coming out between now and early next year. This is barring anything major at the federal level or problems that might arise at the local level or in other states. Posted on: Amador County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ca/Amador/320 Surname: Clough, Fessel, Liversedge, Wooster ------------------------- Seeking information on the family of Abner Poe CLOUGH b. about 1805 and his wife Caroline ?. I have read articles referring to Abner as the grandfather of author Clarence M. WOOSTER who was born in Pine Grove. I believe Abner Poe CLOUGH to be the brother of Orson CLOUGH and they are buried together in the Clough, Liversedge, Fessel family burial site in Pine Grove Cemetery. The 1870 Census lists Orson, his wife Sara Jane, a woman by the name of Evelyn and five children I think are WOOSTERs. The children's names are Edwin E. Clarence M., Caroline L., Lena J., and Austin Zylpha. No last names are listed for the children. Does anyone have information on Abner Poe CLOUGH or the WOOSTER family?
Is there a web site for reading the back issues that were transcribed on this list? Terry
Don't know if these are in the Amador marriage book. I found them recorded in the court docket of Calvin Cain at the Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley campus, this summer. The Bancroft index called the book Amador Co, records (as I recall). Transcription below contains the full text of the entries. The handwriting was scrawled, so some of the names are open to interpretation. p. 122 5 May 1855 marriage of John Ungerwedder to E. A. Beran (?) 16 April 1855 Chow Wan Pat to Lucy Ho 24 June 1855 Benjamin T. Gillum to Miss Drusilla Brown 4 Sept 1856 George Myes to Ava Weast A good part of this book was a series of proceedings about a stray cow claimed by the finder, to which the person who claimed to the rightful owner took strong exception.
Does anyone know where to find the old NATURALIZATION records for Amador -- specifically the District Court records? Francesco Giusto was naturalized as Francis Justo in October 1856 in District Court, Jackson, according to his later registration in SF (1868 supplement to the SF Great Register). I'd like to see the naturalization to find out when and where he filed his statement of intent -- or it he filed one, as he most likely came to the US as a minor. Several of the early California pioneers I'm tracking filed statements of intent in Boston (which can be full of information) or NYC (almost useless). The naturalizations are indexed at NARA for some courts in Boston and NY, but the intents don't seem to be.

Copied these at the National Archives branch in Boston: US Circuit Court, Boston, District of Massachusetts. On 23 Feburary 1852, Joseph BRIGNOLI of Boston, trader, born Parma in Italy o/a 25 Dec 1818, now about 33 years, arrived New York, New York o/a 25 Dec 1841 and intends to become a citizen of the US, renouncing Pius the 9th, Pope. (apparently Parma was in the Vatican territories). Naturalization record was harder to read, but was recorded 15 Oct 1854, witnesses: Bryan Martin and Michael Houghton. Naturalization in Circuit Court, Boston, District of Massachusetts: John RAGGIO, born Genoa Italy o/a 11 April 1834 and now about 33 years, arrived New York NY o/a (day not filled in) May 1842 then being a minor under 18 years; renouncing Victor Emanuel, King of Italy. Sworn 10 April 1867, wit: John A. Lunch and Michael Meade. (for those who came to the US before their 18th birthdays, a statement of intent was not required)
Thank you.... I was getting ready to answer my own question, after looking at the Naturalization site a NARA. You have explained further what I wanted to know. Jean
Dear Jean, You need to find out if there is still a District Court in Calaveras County (it would be in San Andreas if one still exists). If there is no longer a District Court there, call the County Clerk's office (209/754-6372) and find out if the District Court records were incorporated into the Superior Court. You are probably going to get a lot of run-around so be patient and talk to supervisors if you aren't getting the answers you need. If there is someone there specifically in charge of records, they may be your best bet. Even though you have the date that they went to court and were granted citizenship, the only record that will exist is the court order granting the citizenship. It won't contain any genealogical information. If you can locate the Declarations of Intent, you will have hit paydirt. Its a good bet that the Declarations were also filed in the District Court in Calaveras County within the 5 years preceding the date citizenship was granted. In my own case, my gg-grandfather filed his Declaration in Amador Co.'s District Court in Sept. of 1856. His citizenship was granted in Sept. 1860. The District Court no longer exists in Amador Co., but the Amador Archives has the court registers which reflect the general nature of the proceedings each day -- a docket if you will. I have not yet been successful in locating the actual Declaration, but I have seen the register where the filing of the Declaration was noted. Also, there are some actual Declarations trickling into the Archives bit by bit. Apparently there are boxes of old documents warehoused in various county facilities in Jackson -- the contents of which remain a mystery. There is a possibility that the documents were transferred to the San Bruno branch of the NA, but don't count on it. If anyone on the list has been successful in obtaining a Declaration of Intent filed cir. 1850 to 1880 in a California District Court, perhaps they can tell us how and where. I hope this helps in some way and let us know how you faired. Deborah Gubbins Curlanis
Hi Jean....the "do" you questioned on the voting register means ditto, so it would mean same as whatever came before it in that space. Jackie in California kimmee@volcano.net
So that would be West Point. Thank you Jean
Diana....some of this might be repeat to what you already have (as I see some of the Liversedge article you have.) The Wooster name is rather interesting to me as my grandparents lived in what was called the Wooster house on the outskirts of Pine Grove...this was in the late thirties. In the 1950's, I was in the house which had been purchased by someone else. The house is now gone. Amador County History published 1927 by Womens Club Regarding an article about Elcina WOODWORTH who came to California in 1852. Her father died soon after arriving in Jackson & 3 years later her mother died, leaving her an orphan at the age of 5. Mrs. L. F. WALKER and Mrs. A. P. CLOUGH, who were often seen together visiting the sick, were with the mother in her last illness and the former took Elcina and reared her as her own. (This is under heading Amador Indians) Volcano and Pine Grove were surrounded by them (Indians) Clarence WOOSTER , born in Pine Grove (now of San Francisco and very facile with his pen), tells of seeing hundreds of Indians camped about his grandfathers, (Abner CLOUGHS) ranch. There were fine apple orchards there, and the Indians sort of honed for the fruit. There are Indian mills (a group of mortars, stationary) at Middle Bar, Shenandoah, on the HERBERT Ranch (formerly CLOUGHS) on the GINOCCHIO ranch at Scottsville, and many near Butte Mt. (Regarding articles written by Clarence WOOSTER) Clarence WOOSTER, Amador boy, writes articles for the papers. A couple of his narratives will delight the readers of this magazine; but in a recent Bulletin he has told the story of the shepherd dog on the CULBERT cattle ranch . (Regarding the naming of the town Ione) ..The beautiful name Ione was given to the whole valley, before the town was started .many of those at the meeting wished to call it WOOSTER, after a resident of the place, who discovered the Big Trees. (This under the heading of Volcano) W. A. LIVERSEDGE, born in Volcano, and a member of the famous Hook and Ladder Co., resides on the old CLOUGH ranch. He married Miss Kate HERBERT, a daughter of that old pioneer lady, Mrs. Orsan CLOUGH, and sister of Hilda, Elizabeth and Grace CLOUGH, and of W. E. HERBERT, owner of the Sierra Manzana Ranch near Pine Grove where Clarence WOOSTER, a cousin, was born. Hilda CLOUGH is the wife of Paul DENIVELLE and lives in San Francisco part of the time, or at Lake Tallac, in their summer home. Grace married Joe PHELPS, one time Jackson pastor. They live in Sanger (This under heading of Pine Grove) Clarence WOOSTER, grandson of Abner CLOUGHS, is a story teller and writer of rare ability. (Tells a story about his grandmother, who in the winter time entertained the visiting preachers and lecturers.) (Then there is a story entitled A Royal Battle by C. M. WOOSTER .telling about a bear fight in 1870 at Dope Ridge near West Point, Calaveras Co. on the CLOUGH-WALKER cattle range. (This from Logans Alley Vol II, by Larry Cenotto) Under heading of Aqueduct City Also at the end of the valley, near the road to Volcano, would arise the sawmill of A. P. CLOUGH and company in 1854 .. Under heading of Pine Grove Turnpike .This was July 1864 at the second annual meeting of the shareholders of the turnpike reelected Fayette MACE chairman, J. H. BRADLEY, secretary, JOHNSON treasurer, and JOHNSON, BUTTERFIELD, H.W. ALLEN (colonel Allen of Jacksons Union hotel), Samuel SMITH and A. A. CLOUGH, directors. Maybe sawmills were profitable then. SMITH, CLOUGH and JOHNSON all owned or were partners in them. (At the next annual meeting, CLOUGH was reelected to the board). Under heading of Pine Groves Town Hall .In 1869, the building was purchased by the Pine Grove divison 34, sons and daughters of temperance. Those trustees were J. D. LUTTRELL, A. A. CLOUGH and F. McBRIDE. (This from Logans Alley Vol III, by Larry Cenotto) In reference to the Bank of Amador County established in 1896 in Jackson) GASKILL was president, Frederick C. SIEBE vice president, Frederick EUDEY, secretary and cashier, and M.J. Madison, directors. Corporation attorneys would be Judge John F. DAVIS and the Honorable Anthony CAMINETTI. Miss Hilda CLOUGH would be notary. Jackie in California kimmee@volcano.net

LORENTSEN -- Henry Martin Lorentsen, well known and popular resident of Jackson died at the University of California Hospital, San Francisco, Friday, August 10 at 12:30 o'clock. The deceased had been ill for the past three years and was first taken to the hospital after suffering from a slight stroke of paralysis. The most skilled specialists were called and it was found necessary to operate. After the operation it was discovered that a growth existed inside the brain. He past considerable part of his life in his native county later coming to Jackson where he was employed at the Argonaut Mine. Henry Lorentsen was a valuable employee of the mine. He was among the brave local men who risked his life last August during the disaster by going down into the depths of the mine without an oxygen mask to do his part in an effort to rescue the entombed 47 miners. During his residence in this section he won the high respect and esteem of all and his death is deeply regretted by a host of friends. Surviving him are: a wife, Mrs. Ada Lorentsen and daughter, Miss Thelma Lorentsen of Jackson; a mother, Mrs. Emma Lorentsen of Madera county; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Hipkins of Jackson, Mrs. Annie Keller, Mrs. Lillie Keith and Mrs. Laura Brown of Madera county; three brothers, George and John Lorentsen of Madera county and William Lorentsen of San Bernardino. Figoni, PhD, RKT, FACSM" <figonis@cleveland.edu> I saw your posting on Gen Forum about Elenore Ratto. I don't know this specific person, but my mother is Elena Flora Ratto (known as Ellena Figoni), 1918-present, still living in San Francisco. I'm searching my family tree and am looking for relatives of my grandfather, Armando Ratto (1889-1926, San Francisco) and his father, Francesco Ratto (1861-1929), born in Coreglia, Italy, moved to SF later. He had several brothers in Amador County, CA. Thanks.
