I spent a couple of mornings last week in the Genoa federal archives (Archivio di Stato di Genova) looking at ships passenger lists from 1842. In the period from March 1842 to early 1843, there were only three ships direct to "gli Stati Uniti" (the US, no city specified). There were lots of ships to the expected nearby European destinations and a surprising number to Montevideo (they had found fold there, also) as well as a few to Buenos Aires and Rio. The ships to the US were the S. Cloud (or possibly the S. Clara -- it was really hard to read) leaving Genova on 23 Aug 1842, the Susanna on June 27 and the Logan on 1 December. A lot of the passenger's names show up early in Boston and later in Amador Co and SF , so I am posting this on both Norcal and CAAmador. I would be interested, in turn, in knowing where these ships landed -- I'm assuming either Boston or New York. For me the exciting thing was the entry for my ancestor Gregorio GIUSTO who left Genova on 1 December 1942 on the Logan with "a companion" (his wife, almost certainly --- but Genoan women did not change their names on marriage, and the entry looked like a copy from the US log) and three (unnamed) children. The entry identified him simply as being from Sardenia (which is what Genoa was part of then) and going to the US. The only other passenger on this ship was, as best I could decipher it, a Felice Prrigori from Austria. Passengers on the S. Cloud or S. Clara from Genoa to the US were: Molinelli, Angelo, 29 Oneto, Giobatta, 29 Massa, Giacomo, 34 Gandolfo, GioVatta, 67 Bacigalupo, Vincenzo, 39 Molinelli, Angelo, 18 all listed as from Sardenia Passengers on the Susanna from Genoa to the US were: Massa, Antonio, 29 Arata, Giuseppi, 26 Ginocchio, Angelo, 26 Longinotto, Giuseppe, 29 Devoto, Luigi, 35, with his (unidentified) wife Arrata, Antonio, 12 Arrata, Luigi, 42 Botto, Domenico, 22 Massa, Gio.Batta, 24 Arrata, Giovanni, 29 Botto, Agostino, 21 Zannone, GioBatta, 22 (not sure about the age) Botto, Agostino, 26 Ghio, Giuseppe, 17 Brichetto, Giovanni, 38 Botto, Giacomo, 26 Nossano, GioBatta, 30 Zannone, Andrea, 14 Boggiano, Giacomo, 22 Botto, Domenico, 22 Ghio, Angelo, 27 Zachella, Giacomo, 33, with son Boro, Gio.Francesco, 22 Boro, Antonio, 60 The St. Cloud also had these passengers for Marseille (France): Galleano, Giuseppe, 23 Galleano, Girolamo, 57 Galleano, Benedette, 66 Bachigalupo, Bernardo, 28 Bachigalupo, Domenico, 32 Boggiano, Gio Batta, 22 (I think) all listed as from Sardenia These two ships lists were in the volume titled "Sanita 1619"; the Logan was in Sanita 1620. Received a death certificate transcript today for Clarence Marshall WOOSTER that famed writer of Amador County, CA history and one time manager for the San Jose Mercury News. It solved a couple of mysteries for me. The certificate gave his father's full name, John Marshall WOOSTER, and the fact that John was born in Albany, NY which I hadn't previously known. It also gave his mother's name as Jeanette CLUFF born in county unknown Michigan. Jeanette is the daughter of Abner P. CLOUGH of NY.I did not have her name and this is also the first time I've seen the CLUFF variation of the name spelling. California biographical material indicates Captain Abner P. CLOUGH crossed the plains from Milwaukee with his wife, daughter (Jeanette) and John WOOSTER carrying the fruit seed that came to be the CLOUGH orchards in Pine Grove, Amador, CA. John and Abner were in Pine Grove at least once previously before migrating with the CLOUGH family to stay permanently some time about 1850. John and Jeanette were married somewhere in CA a short time later. The information on the death certificate seems to validate the information from California Historical Biography information. Abner P. CLOUGH and John WOOSTER both died in Pine Grove, Amador County in the mid 1800's. Abner is buried next to my gggrandfather, Orson CLOUGH of Erie, NY in the Pine Grove Cemetery. It seems that the migration path for Abner CLOUGH is NY>MI>IL>CA, Orson CLOUGH NY>CA>IL>CA and John WOOSTER NY>MI>CA. Seeking information for: Parents of John Marshall WOOSTER b. abt. 1820. Marriage date for John Wooster and Jeanette CLUFF. Possibly in Amador or Calveras County. Relationship between Abner P. CLOUGH b. abt 1800 and Orson CLOUGH b. 1823. I do not think they are father and son.. Please let me know if any of this looks familiar to you. Diana Busby-Knight Oregon

I did quite a few look-ups in Feb. and March. A couple of people acknowledged receipt of my mail. Yesterday I rec'd mail from a long time cypber friend, a reliable person, who had not rec'd my mail. I then asked a few of the people I had not heard from and sure enough they had never gotten the research I sent to them. I called Earthlink who told me if they were AOL customers....that Earthlink and AOL had a mail problem they have been aware of for a month. AOL is working on it. The mail is out there is cyberspace somewhere....they don't know where. It was not returned as undeliverable. If I volunteered to do a look-up for anyone who has not heard back from me, please mail me thru the list. All but one of the missing pieces of mail went to AOL addresses. Has anyone else had this problem? Terry
