Judy...that possibility makes the story even more sad. I see how you came up with the October date but how does one come up with it by the other method? I've seen it used a number of times but sure didn't work for me. I lost Emelio, brother to Adolph, maybe he ended up in San Francisco too. A cousin recently sent me photo copies of family pictures & many were taken in San Francisco, but most of the family lived in Calaveras County. Another thread to untangle. Thanks for your help. Jackie [email protected]
Hi listers...I need help, please & thank you. Judy in Winnemucca sent me a article on one of my ancestors. I tried to determine when this child was born but I must not be mathmatical enough! The example was gleaned from another list. Could someone assist me? He died December 5, 1906 & was 5 years 1 month 8 days. I wanted to get a printout of the article in the mail to my cousin but wanted to include the birthdate. Thanks for your assistance. Jackie [email protected] >Example: > >Joe Smith died on 1889 May 6. >This translates into the number 18890506. >He was aged 71 yrs., 7 months, 9 days. >This translates into the number 710709. > >Subtract 18890506-710709 = 18179797 >Subtract again 18179797-8870 = 18170927 > >Thus, Joe Smith was born 1817 Sept. 27. > >The only really hard part is knowing precisely how many years, >months, and days Joe Smith lived. Hopefully the tombstone will >have birth and death dates. With that and a pocket caculator >you're in business. > > > >
Thanks Judy...you are right, it was sad. All of the deaths I've read in the old papers wrench your heart. The little girl, Etta, was born 1903. All I had on her was girl Araya so you helped there. Found out last week that Adolph was buried in a paupers grave in Jackson City cemetery. Question: in the article it refers to "refugees living in a camp". Wonder what that meant? Adolph was born in Calaveras County so was a citizen. Anyone have any ideas? Jackie [email protected]

Hello Listers, Thanks to Carolyn Crawford for noting the Crocker surname in her post to the Amador County site. Yes, Crocker is my interest, and I do have Charles Henry CROCKER b. 15 Sep 1870 in Illinois. Possibly the listing here could be him, although there are more famous Crockers in California, and it could be one of them. I have Charles CROCKER married to Ellen J. KREAMER (b. 1870?; m. 2 May 1903 somewhere); the latter could possibly relate to the Clara Ellen CROCKER listed in the message from [email protected] The Charles CROCKER I seek information on was an attorney with one arm (lost one as boy in Jackson, CA). He was an attorney in Amador County, then possibly in Sacramento, and died in 1937 in the latter. He seems to have divorced Ellen and remarried to a Vesta ROBINSON b. 1886 m. 1905(?). If anyone has access to the book below, I would love to know what it says about these three Crockers on p. 404. Please reply to me, and/or post to [email protected] Any other information on the family also appreciated. Thanks! Jackie -- Hope you can use this. It's so sad. PATHETIC INCIDENT -- (Special Correspondence) -- SAN FRANCISCO, December 13 -- Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Araya, who formerly lived at South Jackson, met wth a sad bereavement in the loss of their only son, Raymond Whitney, who died at the Children's Hospital in San Francisco on December 5th, aged 5 years, 1 month and 8 days. He was sick but about two weeks and taken December 1st to the hospital, where he rapidly grew worse, losing consciousness on the 4th, and never recovered. Those who read these lines and have lost dear ones know how hard it is to watch the fleeting breath growing fainter until the last breath is drawn, and loving hands close the eys and fold the little hands. But think what it must be to the poor parents, refugees now living in a camp, trying to bear with patience the weary waiting for news from the sick one. Midnight draws near; all is still at camp. But hark! There is a knock at the door. What is it? "Is this where Raymond Araya's folks live?" asked the policeman standing there. "Yes." "He is dying," is the sad message he comes to bring. It is late; no cars are running; no conveyances to be had, and the long hours drag slowly by until morning dawns and the grief-stricken parents can go to their darling. He was taken to the undertaking parlor, where services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday last. >From there the weeping ones slowly drive to the cemetery, and in the shady woods of Holy Cross cemetery, away from the noise and bustle of the busy world, they have laid him to rest. The little grave was covered with lovely flowers from kind friends in Oakland and Berkeley. The parent's bereavement is rendered doubly hard to bear by reason of the serious illness of their little daughter, Etta, who has been an inmate at the hospital for the past two months with typhoid fever. IF...... If you could see your ancestors, all standing in a row, Would you be proud of them. or don,t you really know? Some strange discoveries are made in climbing the family trees, And some of them, you know, do not particularly please. If you could see your ancestors, all standing in a row, There might be some of them, perhaps, you wouldn,t care to know, But there,s another question whichs requires a different view, If you could meet your ancestors, would they be PROUD OF YOU? -------Anonymous----- enjoy Abigail
Genealogist Why do I search and seek thee out Down through the years that are gone? Your voices are still Your work is done Yet I yearn to know who you were. Why do I wonder about your life In the days that are no more? Your grave is lost Your home is gone yet I yearn to know where you lie. Why do I wish to preserve the past A story of family ties? Your hopes and dreams Your name passed on Descendants lost as the years moved on. Why do I search and seek them out Wonder and ponder where they went? probing to trace from whence we stem A chain long broken I,d like to mend Fragments in our country,s lore Why so I yearn to seek thee out Your deeds. your acts, your way of life? Dormant for generations gone You that are dead. I that am And those that are yet to come. Why do I search and seek and yearn For something that,s forever gone? To give to those who follow me What gold and riches can never buy A pride in family, a will to be Like those who enriched our FAMILY TREE. --by Anita N. Peters march 1964 enjoy Abigail
