    2. Good morning everyone! With almost a new eye, I found those blinkly blank notes. I will have to call Ms. Mendez, to find out more. But I led you all astray! :( sorry, sorry, sorry. IPeter was born in Zoagli, Italy. Peter and his wife Catherine came to SF sometime after their first daughter was born in Virginia in 1861. I have a lot of info on Peter and his wife. Still trying to determine exactly when they arrived in SF. I have found no info so far of them in Virginia. Both Peter and Catherine naturalized. (?) They were living in SF up and until the earthquake and fire, gathered up their finances and retired to Santa Clara, living with a daughter and her husband MENDEZ. Peter died 1910, there. And Catherine died in Oakland, but is buried with Peter. (that is the short story) It was a surprise to me to learn that Peter had a brother. Ok, according to my notes, brother was Charles. He went to Santa Clara State, in the 1800's graduated and became an attorney. He practiced in Amador County. His Grandson John ran the National Hotel. That could be the guy in the obit. John I am told also worked in the Goldfields in Sutter Creek. I think it is Charles we are looking for. So maybe Peter had more family that arrived with him in SF. In a census search we started with the year 1880. Peter and Catherine already had children, one of whom born in Virgina, 1861. Their second born 1867 in California. I wish I had more to go on. Any how you all have been wonderful. Would still like to find out if the Hotel was handed down or sold. And since I don't know when Charles died don't know how to follow that one up, without more info. Jean Hehn Colorado

    3. I am really getting carried away with my posts this evening. There are lots of old photos of the Hotel and it was (and still could be) a very nice place. It is a very old hotel so the rooms are tiny and some of them don't have their own bathing facilities. My Grandmother also cleaned at the National Hotel and told me of watching the "girls" go down the alley to the Doctor's office once a week for their checks ups. Jackson was a wild place until 1955 and Pat Brown decided to do some thing about it. Then there was the infamous plaque....... Sorry folks but it is part of the history of the area, and it could be the reason that no one will talk about certain ancestors. The Last Days of the Late Great State of California makes for good reading, including the fictional part about the Argonaut after the "Big One". Lee in Silver Springs, NV

    3. When I was a teen, I worked several days cleaning rooms in the National Hotel. Then my Mom found out and made me quit because only "bad" people went there. I think, to her, anyone who did not have a regular house was suspect. And this was the 50's and you have to know the history of Jackson at that time. She did let me clean several times at the Broadway Hotel because the lady who managed it was very nice and always said 'hi' to her. 3. Hi all, I've been lurking mostly. Thank you Jackie for your note to the LeFlore list and your post to this list on the same subject. Jackie and I first got together on that list since our ancestors have similar roots and names!! About the National. I am sure Jackie can get the name of the current owner before I can, but I wanted to tell you that I do have a copy of a letter my Great Grandfather wrote to my Grandmother in 1933 that is on National Hotel stationary with John F. Vicini's name on the letterhead. Jackie if you can't get the owners name let me know and I will ask. Steve, your picture on the Amador website of the Manzinita Hotel. It may have been a boarding house out what is now Jackson Gate Road. Most of the resturants out that way started as boarding houses. I drove around some while I was in Jackson for my Grandmothers funeral, but didn't see a building that looked like it. Hmm....I went to school with some Vicini's. Lee in Silver Springs, NV

    2. Carla: The only thing I have found so far was that a marriage license was issued to John W. Forbes and Sarah A. Lee. I checked for a wedding, but haven't found any so far. This is not unusual as many times I found the license issued, but no mention of a wedding or vice versa. As a matter of fact I have to check with Steve and see if I am supposed to put marriage licenses in the data base or just weddings. Steve - help me out. Do I list marriage licenses in the database? 3. Jean, The National Hotel still stands at one end of the main street of Jackson. I was planning on my Mom and I staying overnight there til we saw the delapidated condition of the rooms and heard the loud bar room noise downstairs from the room we were looking at. It's just possible that it hasn't changed a bit since it was built. Jackie can tell us more about it. I don't believe that she goes there for evening entertainment; just that she does live in Jackson.
