What about checking the 1900 census soundex for them? It will supply you with all people of that name listed on 1900 CA census, errors possible, regardless of their location. I'd try both his surname and his daughter's married name. If he doesn't appear then one might conclude that he died prior to 1900. I think that our local family history center has microfilm of the pre-1905 death records of Alameda county if that would help. Might take me 2-3 weeks to check depending on how busy we are on the night I work as a librarian. Think the Alameda index only goes to 1903, but not positive.
