Hi. I just recently found out my grandmother had a sister who emigrated from Wales to Oakland. Her names was Margaret Dwyer, and she married Jim McDonald in California around 1925. She was born around 1897-1900 from my best guesstimite.I have a few letters and pictures that were sent by her to family in Wales. Most of them seem to be from 1947. The earliest letter is written from Emeryville and the others from Oakland. In these letters she mentions Daughter Delores, Son John (Jack) and the youngest Patricia. Jack was born in 1931, and Delores seems about 6 yrs. older, Patricia 2 yrs. younger in the pictures. It sounds from the letters that her husband has died, but she never speaks of the circumstances or actually states he has died, just that they miss him.Sounds like pretty final grieving. Supposedly the last time she was heard from was 1947. Anyway, my questions, if anyone can give me some help, as I'm very unfamiliar with CA: Were there directories for Emeryville around 1925? Can you obtain a Marriage record search for a woman with only a maiden last name? (Her daughter Delores had a child, but I don't the husband's name) What are the available resources I can check for in Oakland in the 1920s-40s? Were there particular TB hospitals in 1947 in Oakland? (Her daughter Patricia had TB and was in the hospital) Was there a 9th Rte or St in Oakland in 1947? I can't make out the rest of the address on the envelope. What were the Catholic Churches in Oakland in Emeryville in 1925? In Oakland in 1940s? I would be most grateful if someone can help with these questions or lend me some advice or guidance for finding out more about these people. It's very possible I have living relatives in CA, but not much to go on to find them! Thank you for your time.
