    2. The following are excerpts from History of Washington Township, a book I bought from EBay..... SPENCER The first school in Irvington was a private one taught by M. M Spencer, in a small building (now a granary...note time is circa 1904 when written but is referring to period circa 1860s), owned by G. M. walters. There were eight pupils, but as Mr. Spencer received but twenty dollars a month, without the privilege of boarding round, his position could scarcely have been a very lucrative one. FISCHER Between 1820 and 1830, Alexander Forbes, an Englishman, Edward Fischer, a German, and William Gulnac and Jedediah Smith, Americans, tarried near Mission San Jose. Mr. Smith alarmed Father Dugan, who had him thrown into the San Jose jail. He was later released and sent on his way to oregon. Later withthe coming of more Americans, the story of modern Mission San Jose begins.....
