Are the early (1860) marriage records kept by county or is there a master index of them? John LOWRIE was married to Mary (several spellings) RHEDEN, RHODEN, REDDING, etc. I have found a Mary RIORDEN in Sacramento County in the 1860 census. She is about the right age and was born in Ireland. John LOWRIE and Mary REDDING were married in Mission San Jose on Dec. 25, 1860 (recorded in Latin). Is it possible that there was a civil marriage maybe in Sacramento and the Mission San Jose ceremony was the Catholic blessing of the marriage? I think the Catholic church in Mission San Jose is St. Josephs. The LOWRIEs were not Catholic. Nancy Lowrie Wright
