Born April 22, 1948 in Berkeley he grew up in the San Ramon Valley. He graduated from the UC Berkeley in 1970, where he majored in physics and was very active on the swimming and water polo teams. He swam competitively into his adult life, including on the Woodland Swim Team. A lifelong football season ticket holder for the Cal Bears, he remained loyal to the athletic teams and other successes of UC Berkeley. Mr. Shipley began his teaching career more than 30 years ago in Woodland. He taught math at Douglass Jr. High until last year when he taught at Pioneer High School. He advised the Douglass yearbook for 27 years, winning multiple national awards. He often videotaped the Woodland High School football games for the coaches. Shipley was an active member of the Woodland Education Association, serving twice as president. He served on the State Council of the California Teachers Association for several years and was a frequent delegate to the National Education Association's annual Representative Assembly. Mr. Shipley was an active community member, serving on the Woodland Parks and Recreation commission. He was a reservist in the Woodland Police Department, winning Reserve Officer of the Year in 1982, and a longtime member of the Woodland Chamber of Commerce. An avid aviator, he served on the Yolo County Sheriff's Air Squadron. He assembled Cruise Books for two aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy, spending several weeks on each carrier. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Shipley, he is survived by his three sisters, Jean and Mary Shipley of Woodland and Ann Rego of Castro Valley; his brothers-in-law, Bob Banqué of Woodland and Roger Rego of Castro Valley; his nephews and nieces, Caryn Heath of Woodland, Steve and Cheryl Rego of Dublin, Mike and Susan (Rego) Hatler of Elk Grove, Ellen Rego of Dublin, and Ron and Erica Gibbens of Eureka; and grandnephews and grandnieces Ryan, Justin and Sierra Heath of Woodland; Makayla, Joshua, Gabriela and Nathanial Rego of Dublin and Michael, Mariah, Kayla, Brayden and Shyann Gibbens of Eureka. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30 at Calvary Baptist Church, 506 Cottonwood St. Remembrances may be sent to the John H. Shipley Memorial Scholarship, Pioneer High School, 1400 Pioneer St., Woodland, 95776; this will be one of the first scholarships provided for students of Pioneer High School.
