Some might still be in business today. Or you might be able to find who is housing their records. There should be a death certificate for Mathias Tanner as this became mandatory in July, 1905. Either the state or the county or both should have a copy. I have gotten death certificates from the state when the county could not find them, but the individuals were listed in the state death index. If Mathias Tanner was German and Protestant then a good guess for a denomination is Evangelical Lutheran. My great grandparents were baptized in this denomination in Schleswig-Holstein. They are buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Livermore. I have not located a church for them in Livermore. Their death notices and death certificate do not mention a church membership. The nearest church may have been in San Francisco. I have a marriage notice from the SF Call dated in 1874 for a brother of my great grandfather occurring in SF naming Rev. J. M. Buehler but it does not name the church. Another brother was married in SF in 1869 with Rev. F. Hansen performing the ceremony and again no mention of the church. All SF marriage records were lost in the 1906 fire and likely church records as well. Anyone have some ideas for Livermore?
