    3. Cris, Are you looking at the Social Security Death Index or the California Death Index? I am guessing that with a recent date you are looking at the SSDI.:-? Have you ordered both the death certificate and the original SS application? 3. Chris, To elaborate on what Rebekah said, I suggest you try to get a death certificate first. I noticed that the SSDI said his last residence was in San Francisco Co., CA. He might not have died there, but chances are he did. Anyone can get a California death certificate for anyone. The State turned over the death certificates to the individual counties about 3 years ago. Go to http://www.vitalrec.com for address, fee, and instructions, etc. Unfortunately, the California Death Index only goes to 1997. Yes, his SSDI application should help, but it's more costly ($27 I think) and it would probably take a long time to get. Also, if you get the death certificate and learn the exact place of death, you could probably find an obituary. You would also have the funeral home and cemetery that may be able to give you some additional info. Sometimes they have the obits in their files. Looks like Richard Miller was not born in California. I checked that for you. Perhaps you can obtain his birth certificate once you find out if this is your brother.
