Cecile - >Thanks everyone. By the way, does anyone know how to trace back the land >ownership issue with the Peralta land grant stuff?? The Peralta land Grant "stuff" is traceable. However, much of the land was handed down within the Peralta family before being sold to the newcomers. Thus you have a number of descendant Peralta folk over most of Alameda Co. selling off property over a period of years. You speak of Emeryville. I'm guessing this would most likely be from the Rancho San Antonio, granted originally to Don Luis Maria Peralta which was handed down to his son Antonio Maria Peralta. He (Antonio) was selling property by 1850 in Oakland and Alameda. Good luck in your research, Wilbur H. Haines PO Box 165 The Sea Ranch, CA 95497 Voice 707.785.3268 Fax 707.785.2682
Have roots that go WAY back in Alameda County. Interested in anyone that may have family from the same area from the same period-might be fun to swap stories, info, etc. John David Doyle, arrived in Alameda County, 1855. Owned "Doyle Tract" in what is now Emeryville, about 20 or so acres along SF Bay, above the old trotting park. Supposedly part of the old Peralta Grant. Also was referred to as "Butchertown" north of his property. His wife was Catherine Ganley of New York. Had about 7 children survive to adulthood. All of the daughters married and stayed in the Bay Area, married names of Conroy, Arnold, McBride, Westphal, Rourke (owned the very ancient Golden Gate Hotel in Butchertown), and Hird. Son, John T. Doyle, was Emeryville councilman for a very long time. Thanks everyone. By the way, does anyone know how to trace back the land ownership issue with the Peralta land grant stuff?? I found other land transactions for John David Doyle in Alameda County in the late 1850s, early 1860s, but not the original land purchase for the property between the Bay and San Pablo Ave. Also, did you have to be a US citizen to make these original land purchases??? Regards, Cecile Conroy

Before sometime in the 20s (not sure exact year) people naturalized in federal, state, county courts -- sometimes even at the local police station. After that, all naturalizations were in the federal courts. There are ways to track down naturalization, but the time frame is important. --Laurel

I thought I'd introduce myself since I recently decided to establish this list. My name is Edward A. Black, Sr. and I established this list for those who desire to contact others who have like desires in locating family members, taking part in discussions or doing other genealogical rersearch in Alameda County, California. My interest in Alameda Co., CA comes because I was born & raised there. My parents moved to Oakland after World War II. I was born in Oakland, CA and grew up in San Leandro, CA. I also spent a several years living in Hayward and some time in Fremont, CA. I graduated from Chabot College in Hayward and met & married my wife of many years in the San Leandro area. Our son was born there as well. I currently live in Lancaster, California and I have been married 27-1/2 years, having raised a son, who himself is married and has 2 sons of his own. He lives in McAllen, TX. I've had an interest in genealogy since I was a child [although I referred to it as finding my roots], but due to a job & raising our son, lacked the time until a couple of years ago. To this day, despite living in Southern California, I still I can find just about anyplace in the East Bay Area. My wife & I have long found enjoyment in helping others, in my case doing what I can to help in family history. I have found that the lists I've taken part in have helped a lot in locating family members on either my own or that of my wife's family. Enjoy this new site and I do hope that it will assist you users with your genealogical work & discussions. It is intended to be a tool for that purpose. Take care & God Bless, Sincerily, Edward A.
