    2. Hi Everyone, I have copies of some mortuary records for family members that list the newspapers which carried the obituaries for the deceased persons. The deaths were in Hayward & having grown up there I recognize the Oakland Tribune & the Hayward Review but have never heard of the Post Enquirer or Thos. Dias, which are both listed on records from 1947. Does anyone know anything about either of these & where I might find them? Thanks in advance, Fawn Silva St.Louis, MO

    3. I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; gme@nwinfo.net and ; sj@censusmicrofilm.com I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin researching ; Sartin , Sartain , Sarton , Sarten , Sardin etc. etc.

    3. I think I have done everything possible through official channels. I have a death certificate. Someone looked up his obit for me, and there was not a single family member mentioned it. The same kind soul went to the Lone Tree Cemetary. The grave said: "We Loved You Pops" indicating a family, but nothing more. I've emailed and written to just about every address I could find of people named Simons living in Hayward. Most of them were Russian Jews, not Portuguese. I was hoping someone on this list from Hayward would remember a Simons family, maybe someone they went to school with. Recently, through the white pages I discovered there's a patch of Simons living in Agoura Hills, (which is out of the context of this list I understand). Jessie Moniz

The newspaper most local to Hayward is the Hayward Argus (may be the Daily Argus). There is also, by the way, a list of newspapers, and the time frames in which they were published, at the Alameda County GenWeb site. It's not complete, but a darn good start. But to tell you the truth, Jessie, I think you would be better off trying to get the death notice/obit for David Simons. Do you have a precise date of death? If not, check (or ask someone to check) the California Death Index. --Laurel

    2. Hi Dani....I found the following in the History of Washington Township: MCGUSHIN in Warm Springs, Alameda county And perhaps most intriguing of all, Joseph F. McGushin, veteran of both World Wars, has built himself a modern adobe from the soil at hand, as did those old Agua Caliente home builders more than a century ago. Traces of these old adobes can still be found, off Mission San Jose highway. 2. Judy Stickney
    3. Looking for the family of Joseph Henry Stickney, born in Marquette County, MI, about 1880. He died in Oakland, CA, on April 11, 1942, and was buried somewhere in Alameda, CA, he had lived for 35 years. The Marquette paper only gave notice of his death, and his survivors being brothers Frank of Marquette, Arthur of LaSalle, IL, Orel of Virginia, MN, and sister Irene of Marquette. Also listed were his wife Marie and "three sons, one of whom is serving in the United States Army in Texas." Is anyone able to check Alameda newspaper archives for his obituary? Does anyone know of this family? Joseph was a younger brother to our grandfather James of Virginia, MN.

    1. Re: [CAALAMED-L] Alameda County Surnames
    2. Hi Fawn...Boy, does the Bettencourt name ring a bell....There was a great market on The Alameda in San Jose (Santa Clara County) that brings back memories......Here's what I found in the History of Washington Township--Hope some of it helps: Bettencourt: in Warm Springs Las Tularcitos was purchased by Henry Curtner in 1867. In 1879 he erected a 17-room house on the place. His son, Arthur d. sold this 1934 to the Portuguese IDES Society, which intended to use it as a home for its aged members. During the two years the society owned it, it heltwo great festivals, some 10,000 people from all over the state attending the one given in 1937. The Dominican sisterhood of Wisconsin leased the property in 1946, calling it "La Casa de Caridade". But in 1948 it was sold again to Joe M. Bettencourt. There is lots of information also on the old Warm Springs Hotel which is very colorful [my grandfather and his third wife had their wedding reception there in the 1950s]. ....intriguing are the records of the Warm Springs Hotel register, for the years 1861 and 1868....lots of names if anyone would like me to list..... SILVA: listings for Judge and Mrs. JA Silva; M.D. Silva, Manuel Silva blacksmith, Muriel Fournier Silva, Tom Silva constable......any of interest? MENDONCA. Hayward Legion Post No. 68 organized Township Post No. 195 on Aug 9, 1921. There were 29 charter members. Joaquin L. Fields was first commander and Frank R. Mendonca, first adjutant. Centerville Boy Scouts were organized about 1915. Orion Dunbar is scotmaster today with 41 scouts, 16 explorers, and Arthur Belshaw is committee chairman. Richard Mendoca is cubmaster of 32 boys. For 27 years Phillip Brazil has been a leader of Scout work. SOARES: Oc October 18, 1919, a "Welcome Home" dinner was given at the IOOF Hall in Niles, and dancing later at Conners Hall, honoring eighty returned veterans and two who had fallen in action==Marian Soares and John Franco. Helmut: Did Edwin die in the *city* of Alameda or the *county* of Alameda? chances are that either way his obit would have been in the Oakland Tribune. Alameda is a smaller city that abuts Oakland, the county seat (actually, it's across an estuary) but the Tribune was still the major paper for the area in the 70s. --Laurel
