    1. [CAALAMED-L] Death Certificate Lookup?
    2. If anyone does lookups at the Alameda County Courthouse, I wondered if perhaps someone could please look up the death certificate of George Washington "Swope" Hull, who died on May 4, 1911 in Oakland. He was buried in Mt. View Cemetery. I wanted to know for sure if this George Hull is the one I'm looking for. He was born in Virginia around 1850 to George Washington Hull and Sarah Ann Swope Hull. He was married to Mary Dever or Devier. If someone could confirm this information on the death certificate, I would appreciate it. If it is the one I'm looking for, could you also please give me his birthdate and the name of the funeral home that handled the burial arrangements? Thank you. Duston Brooks

Does anyone have access to any newspapers of the time for an obituary? Or any other information about employees or these two institutions. Thank you, Janet Hanson hanson@idir.net

Often in City Directories a person who owned a business would be listed with their business as well as residence address. City Directories for Oakland are in the Periodical Room of the Main Branch of the Oakland Public Library. I believe there are also some Oakland directories at the San Francisco public library, but --as you might guess--Oakland has a more complete set. If you are far away and don't have access to the library, but do have access to an LDS Family History Center, many of the directories have been filmed. --Laurel

As it happens there is (for the most part) no 1890 census. A sad tale, it is, but the short version is that it burned. There are a couple of stray counties (alas, not in California) that remain as well as some data re Civil War veterans, but that's about it. I did check the index for the 1890 Alameda County Great Register and found no William JOHNSON (doesn't prove anything except that he probably wasn't registered to vote then). --Laurel
