Hi, I would also like to know about Kaiser Hospital. My Grandmother became a nurse there, and I was also born there in 1940. I was wondering if they would have an archive about their nursing school. Jean Hehn
CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown --part1_f9823a7d.24840db2_boundary--

Hi to all you California researchers. I found in the Allen Co., Indiana library a copy of report titled 'Genealogy of the Grove and Groves Families' written about 1941 by Geo. N. Groves, Genealogist, 2163 Acton Street, Berkeley, California. He had placed advertisements in several magazines and was collecting info on any and all Grove and Groves that would answer his advertisements. I am trying to find if he ever published any more information or what happened to the data he collected. Did it by any luck get sent to a genealogy society? Does anyone have any clues to how I might find out more about Geo. Groves research. Thank you for your help. Serena in Michigan SOliphant@aol.com

My cousin Carnell Baker Thomas died 16 Jan 1969, in Oakland, CA. She was survived by her husband, Samuel A. Thomas, a daughter, Clara Lee Johnson, sons, Donald and Raymond Thomas, and six grandchildren. Would like to hear from one of her descendants in regard to the Moore family history that I am compiling. Thanks in advance. Bill B.

Hi, folks-- Just wondering if anyone knows if old Oakland and/or Berkeley Chamber of Commerce meeting minutes and similar records are archived somewhere. I'm looking for records for the period 1905 to 1930 or so, especially 1916-1922. Also searching for an interlibrary loan site for borrowing microfilm copies of the Lakeside Baptist Church records. I know there's a copy at the Swenson Swedish Research Center in Illinois. but they don't circulate. The third item I am looking for is original records of business incorporations in Oakland and SF for the period 1905 to 1920. I am researching the Sommarstrom Brothers Construction Co., which operated from about 1906 to 1917 and 1920 (?) to the early 1930s or so. In 1917, two of the brothers, along with considerable outside backing, started the Sommarstrom Shipbuilding Co. It was apparently originally incorporated in California before a location for the shipyard was selected in Columbia City, Oregon. Any assistance in locating any of these records would be most appreciated. Ginny in Seattle _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Hi List, Does anybody have a copy of the Berkeley City Directory for 1915? I am looking fo the above names. I am pretty sure that there was an Alwin KUHNE residing in Berkeley at that time. These families were part of the emigrants from Hannover who first went to Hawaii in 1883 to work on the sugar plantations and I am fairly sure they left there after 1890 for the mainland.
