    1. [CAALAMED-L] Searching for Alicia Schliep
    2. Hi again listers, I thought of an alternative to my problem. Is there someone who could go to the county courthouse and get a death certificate for me? I just learned today that I have to take a trip to Mill Valley next week before the mail would get one to me. If I could get burial information, I might have an opportunity to confirm the burial. I'd be happy to pay costs. This would be a great help to me. The deceased is: Alicia Hynes Schliep. She died in Oakland on June 29, 1953. Oh, I hope someone can do this. I do have a feeling of urgency. I've been searching for this person for so long and am so close. Thanks. Kathleen Dewey

    2. Hi, List I have traced my family from 1850 to 1953 in Oakland and I am stumped. The obit for Alicia Schliep (died June 29, 1953) says her funeral Mass was at the Chapel of Our Lady's Home on 1900 34th Ave. in Oakland and arrangements were through East Lawn Chapel Services and interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery. Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma has no such record. Is the funeral director still in Oakland? has it been taken over by someone else? What is Our Lady's Home? Is it still there? Any help is appreciated. Thank you. Kathleen Dewey

    1. Re: [CAALAMED-L] I HAVE A QUESTION...
    2. Hi Janet, I know for myself I use both the Alameda and the San Francisco County Rootsweb lists. In my mind, even though the Bay separates the counties, that the Bay Area is the Bay Area, which includes SF and Alameda. So, I guess it never really occurred to me that it was strange to see some SF queries on the Alameda List. My g-grandmother's family lived in Alameda County since the 1850s. But when she and some of her sisters married, they moved to San Fran, while other siblings stayed in Alameda (or Emeryville) so I'm continuously going back and forth.... Cecile

I can, however, speak for myself. I do lookups in the CADI because it's quick, easy, AND--mostly--it's a source that people around the country do not have access to. (btw, I'm on a brief hiatus, so please folks, don't write to me for a CADI lookup this month). I don't trot down to the courthouse to transcribe death certificates because it's not even close to being convenient, it's a cumbersome process that is costly and time-consuming, AND--mostly--because anybody can write to court house and order the certificate themselves from the comfort of their own home (wherever it may be). My time for volunteering is limited and I prefer to spend it on helping people who don't have access to the resources. YMMV --Laurel ============= Warning! Bob: I'm assuming that this would be the "Reg #" listed in *most* of the decades of the CADI indices. I have not been including that info when I do lookups because I figured that if one had the precise death date, it wouldn't be that important for the county to retrieve it. However I'll gladly give you the nod as the expert here and start including it in my info--after all, an extra 4 or 5 digits can't be much of a bother once I've already looked up the entry <g> Thanks for the tip. --Laurel ============= Warning! 1. Re: [CAALAMED-L] County vs State Certificate Numbers from CADI

    3. Yes it does. But if it's listed in CADI with an Alameda county location then it should be available in Alameda county and they should be able to find it without a number if the person wants to order it from the county. If the county can't locate it then the person knows that the state can. I do most of my lookups for NORCAL which is not county specific. I really don't want to keep track of county vs state numbers. I appreciate the suggestion but I think that Alameda specific requests should probably go to someone that has volunteered for Alameda lookups. Just took a look at the CA Helplist http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/6995/ and two names are listed for CADI lookups for Alameda county. Laurel is also the GenWeb host for the Alameda county GenWeb site. Laurel Egenberger laurele@hooked.net California Death Index (mid-1905 - 1992) and George W. Anderson Jr. gwa@ccnet.com California Death Index 1905-1990 I would be happy to provide the county number to a person that is actually going to volunteer to visit the courthouse and transcribe the death certificate - (I have a couple of death certificates I would like to have looked up that I don't want to buy.)
