    1. [CAALAMED-L] Correction to: "Lost" Index to 1883 Alameda Co. History
    2. George Anderson
    3. Please note the corrected cost in the third paragraph of this message posted yesterday: The Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society (L-AGS) has just published a reprint of a "lost" index to Wood's "History of Alameda County, California," 1883. The full book, reprinted in 1969, is widely held by libraries in California and elsewhere, but it contains only a perfunctory index, mainly keyed on the names of prominent citizens who paid to have their biographies printed in the book. The Works Progress Administration compiled a complete name and subject index to Wood's "History" in 1936. In contrast to the book itself, this index appears to be rare. A search failed to find it in the online catalogs of the LDS Family History Library, the Library of Congress, the University of California, Sutro Library, the California State Library, the Oakland Public Library or the San Francisco City Library. However, the Alameda County Library has a carbon copy typescript of the index (VCa 974 Wood's...) housed in a locked case in the Maurice Marks Center for Local and California History in the Fremont Main Library. It is the Alameda County Library copy of the index that has just been reprinted by L-AGS. L-AGS's reprint is a xerographic reproduction of the carbon copy index, 8 1/2 x 11 inches, 223 pages, spiral bound, containing about 9000 entries. As a public service, L-AGS is offering the publication for sale *to libraries and societies* for the cost of printing ($16) plus shipping ($3.20). To members of L-AGS the cost is $18. plus $3.20, and to all others the cost is $20. plus $3.20. Orders may be sent to: L-AGS ("Wood's Index") P.O. Box 901 Livermore, CA 94551-0901 Checks should be made out to "L-AGS". George Anderson, L-AGS Webmaster

    3. Robin I check at the Oakland Library, today and found the following: 1899 city directory no listing. 1900 a H. A. HELMAN, is living at 863 E. 21 Street. 1901 a Herman A. 3. Hi Ginny... "Oakland Heritage Alliance is a non-profit corporation that was formed to bring together community groups and individuals sharing an interest in the history of Oakland, and in the preservation and conservation of the city's archaeological , architectural, cultural, environmental and historical resources." from their quarterly news. Its 32 pages long for the Winter-Spring 1999 issue. As to whether or not they have published anything outside of their news letter, I don't know. Their address is P.O. Box 12425, Oakland, CA 94604. Phone #: 510.763.9218 or oaklandheritage@california.com I'm sure if you contact them, they will answer any and all questions. 2. Norby Family
    3. visit http://nitro.westphila.net for some history and pictures and recent articles that have appeared in SF papers Colleen _____________________________ I've always loved the giant camera--if you've never been there, make sure you do soon in case this petition drive fails. Inside a darkened room (the "body" of the camera), you see a live, fully three-dimensional image of the surrounding seaside projected onto a large parabolic mirror. It's astounding. Since I live nearby, I have a special connection. I don't normally send on petitions, so I hope that you'll forgive me this one. Christopher Werby Petition Follows: The Giant Camera, or Camera Obscura, at the Cliff House in San Francisco, is being threatened with removal and possible destruction. An effort to save it is underway. Read and sign...Thanks, We the undersigned are concerned about the plans to remove the Jenning Giant Camera from behind the Cliff House in San Francisco. We feel that the Giant Camera should not be removed from its current location. We make this decision based on the historical, cultural and educational contributions that it makes to San Francisco, the State of California and the USA. The Giant Camera camera obscura, is one of the last antique camera obscuras in the United States and the last of three built by Floyd Jennings. It is one of the last remaining structures from the Playland at the Beach Amusement Park, which stood at Ocean Beach between 1948 and 1972. As we enter the new century, it important to preserve the artifacts of the 20th Century before they all disappear. In addition to being culturally and historically significant the Giant Camera is a very valuable tool for the teaching of photography and the basic functions of light. It is imperative that the Giant Camera is preserved so that generations to come can enjoy and learn from its scientific wonder. The Giant Camera has been threatened many times over the last 30 years. In 1977 it was considered for the National Register of Historic Places but was rejected because it was not yet 50 years old. The Giant Camera celebrates its 51st anniversary in 1999. It is time that it was given the historical status it deserves and be allowed to stay at its present location at the Cliff House where it belongs. If you sign, please forward on to others. If not, please don't kill it - send it to the email address listed here: savethecamera@yahoo.com If you happen to be the 50th, 100th, 150th, etc. signer of this petition, please forward a copy to savethecamera@yahoo.com This way we can keep track of the lists and organize them. Forward this to all the giant camera fans you know.If you like more information on this campaign write to savethecamera@yahoo.com and visit the website at http://nitro.westphila.net Feel free to print this petition and circulate. >>> 1. 3. What about checking the 1900 census soundex for them? It will supply you with all people of that name listed on 1900 CA census, errors possible, regardless of their location. I'd try both his surname and his daughter's married name. If he doesn't appear then one might conclude that he died prior to 1900. I think that our local family history center has microfilm of the pre-1905 death records of Alameda county if that would help. Might take me 2-3 weeks to check depending on how busy we are on the night I work as a librarian. Think the Alameda index only goes to 1903, but not positive. Know I found two 1903 death's of relatives in it. larry k. ********************************************************** At 08:14 AM 7/15/1999 -0500, Robin Helman wrote: >Hi! > >Any suggestions for someone who died between 1899-1904 "in California" We >are still trying to find out where Herman HELMAN ended up. 3. Hi! Any suggestions for someone who died between 1899-1904 "in California" We are still trying to find out where Herman HELMAN ended up. Last known to be going to Oakland in 1899 with his daughter Mrs. McKenney. This is based on the following from the Ashland (Oregon) tidings newspaper tidbit: Monday, January 30, 1899 Mr. Harmen Helman, a brother of Capt. A.D. Helman, the well known Ashland pioneer, was in the city Saturday, en route to Oakland CA., accompanied by his daughter Mrs. McKenney. The brothers had not met before since 1849 when they separated "back in the States". Apparently "back in the States" refers to Ashland Ohio where they were born. Herman's (sometimes referred to as Harman) wife died "in California, leaving a husband and three children" in August 1862 according to a tidbit from an Ashland Ohio newspaper. Thanks! 3. You can determine when someone died in CA thru a California Death Index lookup. Once you know a person died in CA you can order the death certificate from the state or the county of death and you can find the burial site, the funeral home that handled the arrangements etc. The CADI is available July 1905-1994. -----Original Message----- From: Kathleen Burnett <kburnet@efortress.com> To: CAALAMED-L@rootsweb.com <CAALAMED-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, July 13, 1999 10:23 PM Subject: [CAALAMED-L] Question regarding Oakland Cemetery >I someone were living at 1747 10th Ave., Oakland, Alameda Co., CA in >1946 - where most likely would they have been buried if they were buried >near their home? > >I am looking for Pettus Family Graves > >Kathleen Burnett > >______________________________

    3. The last time I posted a message concerning the Gen Connect boards it was brought to my attention that not all counties were covered which I wasn't aware of. If you check back now I think you'll find that all counties are now listed - check out the index at this address http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/Ca.html and start sharing your CA data or post a query to the query board Colleen
