Dear Martha, How do we address you via the list. Do we title our query "1890 Alameda County Great Register"? What information do we include in our request? Is the name sufficient? Yes, I'm curious about "Rudy LUTZ". Some of the alternate spellings of Lotz are Lutz, Loetz, Luts, Lots, etc. The reason I'm curious is that I have a distant "cousin" in Germany named Rudi Schroeder. There has been no contact with him since the 1960s, but he is about my age and should be around still. I just sent a letter to the only Rudi Schroeder listed in one of the Internet White Pages for Hamburg so maybe I've found him. I've never heard of the Schleswig-Holstein Veren in San Francisco. If anyone has any info, I would be interested. Is this an ongoing organization or was it an immigrant organization that has died out? The existence of such a group might explain how my great grandparents got to the bay area. Speaking of organizations, Henry Lotz was a Mason. Is it possible to contact the Masons and get information about former members? Roselawn Cemetery, were these people are buried, was started by the Masons in Livermore. I have the remains of a parchment, now mostly eaten by bacteria, that identified Henry as a Mason. The document is (was) written in German. My wife can read the old German script so translation wasn't a problem. Also, the picture on it was a dead giveaway. It's the same one you can see in many histories of Germany depicting a leaderhosen clad hunter entering his home with a fist full of game to much excitement by wife and kids. Now that I've mentioned Masons, my other great grandfather, Capt. Charles Harrington McLeod, was a Mason as well. He settled late in life in Oakland, CA with his second family. He was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 1840 and died in S.F. Harbor in 1911 after rowing out to his ship, the Costa Rica. Capt. Charlie is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Oakland with his half brother Capt. Will. I don't expect Capt. Charlie was a registered voter in 1890. His second family is included in the Pictou County, Nova Scotia census of 1901. He was probably at sea at the time. Regards Steve McLeod Markham, Virginia Dear Steve, remember, women could not vote in 1890 so will not be listed. >Henry (or Heinrich) LOTZ and wife Geesche (or Lanrap). Martha: Henry (or Heinrich) LOTZ and wife Geesche (or Lanrap). They lived at 1374 W. 4th St., Livermore, CA. The address was changed in the 1950s to 1932 4th St. Henry died 23 Sep 1899 so he isn't in the 1900 census. They immigrated from Schleswig-Holstein in 1871. For more interest, the house was owned by Magnus HANSEN, "a cousin." My father's Aunt Laura, listed in the census below, later owned the house and my father inherited it from her. My brother and I grew up in this same house. After we moved to the east coast, the house was sold to someone who wanted to put a business on the site and he had the house torn down and the garden bulldozed even though the city had an easement on the property for its historical value and for the uniqueness of the vegetation in the garden. Magnes, Geesche, Henry, and Laura are all buried in Roselawn cemetery in Livermore. Lena, my grandmother, is buried with Grandpa, Capt. John Daniel McLeod, in Moutainview Cemetary in Oakland, CA. The Roselawn cemetery tombstone transcriptions are on the Web on the Livermore genealogy societies web site with a few transcription errors. Once Martha in Seattle has lost her sanity --her words, not mine :-) - -and/or access to the Great Register Index, you can get a copy of this work for yourself. The East Bay Genealogical Society has published the index to the 1890 Great Register for Alameda County and its for sale ($24.95). If you have a lot of roots in turn of the century Alameda County you might be interested. You can get info by going to the EBGS site: http://www.katpher.com/EBGS/EBGS.html and from there clicking on "Publications" Obviously, this is not something you would want to buy for that stray ancestor who once waltzed through Alameda County, but for those with LOTS of roots in turn-of-the-century Alameda County, it's nice to have. --Laurel
Does anyone know if the above captioned group still exists? I found a receipt/certificate from this group where my ggmother purchased services, presumably for her husband. And my dad doesn't remember where these grandparents were buried (the others are at Mountain View). Chris
