Hi Cris, Google "California Death Index". When you get there use a combination of names, etc., to see if you can find her. If you pin point her, I suggest you send for her death certificate. Anyone can get a death certificate for anyone. The state of California turned over the records to the individual counties about 3 years ago. Go to http://www.vitalrec.com for address, fee, instructions, etc. You'll need to send them a copy of your driver's license or some other type of I.D. Once you get that you'll have the exact place she died and it will be easier to get the obit. What appears on most death certificates other than specific death details is only as good as the family member who offers the information. Many of the certs. I've gotten (from elsewhere) ask about parents including place of birth and mother's maiden name. We, as researchers, are surprised when someone doesn't know their parents' birth place or mother's maiden name. But, it's not unusual. I don't believe I've ever seen questions about other family members. I have a death certificate that gives my great grandmother's birth place in Germany but the copy is poor quality and even a second copy wasn't any better. I haven't found anyone who might be able to look at the original, yet. Such frustration!! Also, beware of spelling and legibility. (Do you know if your grandfather served in WW2? You might be able to gain access to some military records.) I do have several death certificates that offer just what I needed, too!! All is not lost in every case! There are people on this list, especially George, who can give you Alameda-specific info much better than mine. Marla
Thanks to Mary and Marla for your interest and advice re death certificate. I have now ordered the death certificate for 1949 and hopefully something will come from that, if the informant knew Raymond's details. Thanks! April -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I have the SSN death index and the CA death index info on George J Verrell who died on 4 Jan 1965 in Alameda. Is there any way for me to get more info from MO? Any suggestions happily accepted. Thanks, Bobbie
Hello, I am new to this list and hope someone can answer a question for me. I would like to send for my grandfather's brother's death certificate. He died in Alameda County in 1949. What I need to know before spending money (I'm in Canada) is what kind of information is on a certificate. It appears it will be stamped with "Informational purposes only" and that is fine, but what I need to know is if any personal information is on it besides, name, date of death, age. I'd like to know if burial place is noted, residential address, name of informant (as in a daughter). Without this information, it is useless to me. I already know his age, name and birthplace. I'm hoping to find something on this certificate that will lead me to his descendants, or indeed, my grandfather who absconded in 1934! Does anyone on this list have a registration from the County for that era that could tell me what kind of info is shown? Thanks in advance for any help offered.
