PLACER COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PO BOX 7385 AUBURN, CA 95604 (530) 887-2646 www.pcgenes.com/pcgs.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 13, 2003 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY TO MEET IN AUBURN The Placer County Genealogical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7PM, Thursday, July 24th, in the Beecher Room of the Auburn-Placer County Library, 350 Nevada Street in Auburn. The meeting is free and open to the public. The program speaker will be Jack Steed. His subject is, "Donner Party Rescue – Johnson Ranch." Jack is an Illinois native and came to California in 1933. He went to school in Sacramento and was a carrier flyer for the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Jack rediscovered the Johnson Ranch adobe, outside of Wheatland, California. This adobe is connected to the Donner Party that was rescued from the Sierras. In 1988, he authored the book The Donner Party Rescue Site: Johnson's Ranch on Bear River. He has led tours of this ranch and is very familiar with its history. He collects antique arms and accoutrements and speaks to historical and genealogical groups. The Placer County Genealogical Society has a membership of over 200 individuals and families that have genealogical interests. The group holds a general meeting at the Auburn library site on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7-9PM, and features a program speaker on various genealogical subjects. The group also offers two specialty day groups. One that studies various topics of member interest, which meets at the library on the first Tuesday of the month (except July and August), and the other, the Family Tree Maker User Group, reviews genealogy computer program subjects, on the second Thursday of the month.
