Each episode presents three mysteries for viewers to explore. The hosts of the program are renowned experts in the world of historical investigations and are devoted to solving historical mysteries, searching out the true facts (and falsehoods) behind local folklore, family legends and interesting objects. The investigation of each mystery or "puzzle from the past" can follow dozens of different paths. As the detectives work, they provide viewers with explanations for choosing specific avenues of research. When the detectives use scientific tests, both the purpose and the methods are described in detail. Here are two examples of the type of cases that are explored: * The Place: Jack's house, Oregon The Case: Was this watch a gift from noted American author, Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain to prominent Oregonian Captain Ainsworth? His grandson Jack asks the history detectives to follow the trail of these two adventurous men to find out. * The Place: Salem, Oregon The Case: Where did this Revolutionary War poem, recently discovered in an antique trunk, come from? Did the author, an American prisoner of war sent to England write it there and how did his poem travel for over two centuries, across the sea and a nation, to end up in Oregon? The History Detectives are on the case.
