    1. Germans from Russia meeting 9-25-05

    3. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Northern California Chapter of Germans from Russia Heritage Society will meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, 2005, in the Fellowship Hall at St. John's Lutheran Church, 17th and L Streets, Sacramento. The program will be "Selected Tales about the Germans from Russia," presented by Vice President George Niesl. Most of the tables that will be read to you were presented over many years to various groups by the late Reuben Goertz, an outstanding folklorist. Goertz, whose parents settled in Freeman, SD, was of Mennonite background, and he shared many tales from these people, but he also told stories of other Anabaptists like the Hutterites, as well as those of other Protestants and Catholics. He studied the people from wherever they came, whose ancestors were Black Sea, Volga, or Volhynian Germans. In all cases he brought understanding, compassion, and a great sense of humor to his telling of the tales of our people. It is hoped that we will all get a sense of the spirit of the man, Reuben Goertz, as we hear some of his tales relayed to us. He has stories about the early years of settlement in the Dakotas, the problems of adjustment to a new language and different customs, information about the food they ate: the stories of immigrants showing great fortitude and humanity as they become Americans. George Niesl will introduce you to the stories told by Reuben Goertz, but will also tell you about some items that our Germans from Russia ancestors adopted from their Russian neighbors. We'll have a chance to try some food with which we may not be familiar. Try to be there for this experience with your friends at the Northern California Chapter meeting of the GRHS in Sacramento. Note: Our meeting location is changed to the Fellowship Hall because the St. John's Art Festival is in Goethe Hall. You are invited to come early and see all the different and beautiful works of art.
