Lynn (and everyone else who asked the same question), Believe it or not, this has a lot to do with genealogy. What Pam did not say in her message is why we are looking for a covered wagon. Yes, in a way, it is a new meeting place -- it's a meeting of the biggest genealogy event in the country. The wagon is needed for a exhibit booth at the National Genealogical Society conference in Pittsburgh this May. As the local host for next year's conference (which will be in Sacramento), representatives from the Council are going to Pittsburgh to promote California genealogy and the 2004 Sacramento conference. We need a goldminer for our display, too. The ROOT CELLAR Spring Seminar is being held on Saturday, April 12 at Woodcreek High School in Roseville. Our featured speaker is Barbara Renick. Barbara has 30 years of research experience tracing her own family tree in the challenging areas of Eastern Europe and the hills of Tennessee. She has taught genealogical computing classes since 1985, and presented lectures, seminars, workshops, and computer labs at regional conferences since 1983 and at national conferences since 1994. She is well known for explaining technical material in easy-to- understand language. Barbara is a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild and the Association of Professional Genealogists, where she is currently serving on the board of trustees. She writes for several genealogy publications and co-authored The Internet for Genealogists: A Beginner*s Guide. Tentative topics include: Better Internet Search Techniques - The Internet brings a world of resources to genealogists. Unfortunately, this can be an overabundance of riches. This lecture explores three methods for finding information on the Internet and helps you get more from your browser software. It also reviews often overlooked search capabilities in software found today on most computers Seven Rules for Successful Online Searching - This lecture takes a light-hearted look at seven principles for successful online searching. It starts with the premise that a ROSE by any other spelling is likely to be missed by your average search engine and ends with how the three blind men described an elephant (showing how each of us can personalize our Internet experience to meet our needs and limitations). Library Resources Online - Genealogists love libraries and archives. They love even more the ability to search library catalogs online. This lecture covers where to find library resources online, some of the advanced search features you will encounter in online catalogs, and some of the things that are not included in them. Mistakes I've Made (and you can avoid) as a Computer Genealogist - A humorous look at what to do and what not to do as a genealogist using a personal computer. How to Protect Your Computer and Your Work - This lecture covers computer maintenance for the protection of your computer and your work. This includes the use of a U.P.S. and power considerations (for those days when you are hit with rolling blackouts), scan disk and defrag maintenance requirements, and the 5 W's of backups. Fees are: $22.00 for ROOT CELLAR members, $27.00 for non-members (pre-registration due by April 1) or $35.00 after April 1. The seminar will run from 9 am to 4 pm. Send a check to ROOT CELLAR SGS, P.O. Box 265, Citrus Heights, CA. Please include name, address, phone number and Email address. If you would like a copy of the Spring Seminar flyer (in .pdf format Adobe Acrobat), please Email vjhawk55@juno.com requesting the Rennick flyer (please include your name).
