The fight for access to records we use for genealogical and historical research has now reached the Federal level. The following notice is from Iris Carter Jones. Notice there is a California Senator behind this bill as well. PD FEDERAL LEGISLATION - A CALL TO ACTION At the federal level there are two bills on privacy and the use of Social Security Numbers working their way through the system. They are call the Social Security Misuse Prevention Act. Granted, the misuse of Social Security Numbers has gone on much too long, but as the bills are worded it could spell the end of the Social Security Death Indexes. Even if they were to exempt the present Death Indexes, no further indexes could be developed. The Utah Genealogical Society has worked to get the authors to amend the bill to protect the continued availability of the death indexes, but so far there have been no amendments. It is time for the genealogy community to let Washington know how we feel. We want people's privacy protected but we do not want to see this very important historical research tool lost forever. It is important to thousands of genealogists and family health historians. We ask that make the following amendments in S228 and HR637: 1. Under Sec. 3 (a)(1)(a) DEFINITIONS, add the following definition: "SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER - The term 'social security number' refers to the social security number of a living individual." 2. Under Sec. 4 (a)(1)(e)(2) LIST OF PAPER AND OTHER NONELECTRONIC RECORDS, delete "(D) death certificates." You can contact the authors: S228 Senator Dianne Feinstein 331 Hart Senate Office Bldg. -----Original Message----- From: Pam Cooper [mailto:pamcooper@bellsouth.net] Sent: Friday, April 11, 2003 6:16 AM To: APG-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [APG] STATE LIBRARY--UPDATE! The fight continues. Politicians will be politicians This just in from the Florida Library Association <fla@lists.netimpact.net> And the fight continues even after the Legislators said NO! Please, again I ask you to start writing the legislators, but most importantly Glenda Hood, secretaryofstate@mail.dos.state.fl.us or jnash@mail.dos.state fl.us and Governor Bush, jeb.bush@myflorida.com These two have spoken out against what the legislators voted and will continue to do it their way --- in any they can. The saga continues as the Administration looks for ways around the will of the people and their legislators... Despite the Senate and House of Representatives' clear opposition to the transfer of the circulation to Nova Southeastern and their decision to NOT fund the deal, the Administration continues to look for ways around it and has suggested that private funds may be solicited to make the transfer. Also, despite opposition to the transfer of Records Management to the Department of Management Services, the Administration is looking for ways to accomplish this anyway through the bill that addresses reorganization of the Department of State and the Department of Community Partnerships. State records are evaluated by archivists for historical value and some positions in Archives are funded by the Records Management revenues. In March, the Archivist of the United States, John W. Carlin, wrote a superb letter to the Governor, Speaker of the House and Senate President that explaing the importance of keeping Records Management functions with the Archives. Jody Fitzgerald, FLA's legislative advocate is working with legislators on the reorganization bill to try to prevent both of these things from happening. It is absurd that the Administration continues to push for this horrible plan to dismantle the State Library of Florida. Unfortunately, they still don't understand what the citizens of Florida have been telling them for three months and what the House of Representatives communicated last week with their UNANIMOUS vote against funding the Nova deal. Please communicate with your legislators 1) that the reorganization bill should not give the Administration the ability to send the collection away or dismantle the State Library as they originally proposed, and 2) there is great value in keeping Records Management with Archives under the State Library--the functions of the two areas are closely related. As always, thank you for your continued efforts in support of our State Library. John F. Szabo Vice President/President-elect Florida Library Association ==== APG Mailing List ==== The Association of Professional Genealogists http://www.apgen.org/publications/apg-l/index.html
I received a call from the Sutro Library today informing me that as of May 1, 2003 the Sutro Library in San Francisco will no longer offer Saturday hours.
If you research in Florida or are just wondering what is happening with the fight to keep the Florida State Library and Archives intact here is the latest update. Ok, now that I have calmed down. <G> We WON!!!!!!!!! Representative Bev Kilmer of Marianna presented to the Speaker of the House Johnnie Byrd a proposed amendment. He approved it and told her to present it to the House. It was done very late -- probably the last one on the agenda just before 5:00 p.m. The most amazing part is that it was a unanimous vote. Incredible, but true. Also, this is the way I understand it will work. Both the House and the Senate are proposing the exact same budget. So, that means, there is no discussion and this is what they will send to the Governor. The downside is that 14 people are still losing their jobs and it is mostly in the Archives area. That will hurt them. The books are staying, and 106 people still have their jobs!! Please send a thank you to all your representatives. They do deserve our acknowledgement of support because they DID listen even though at times we really thought they were against us. What an amazing turn of events! I am not going to be able to sleep for days!!!!!! Some of you will get this many times because I am trying to send to all my lists. I apologize, but good news is always worth receiving over and over. <G> Pam Cooper FGS/FSGS 2003 Conference Co-Chair < http://www.fgs.org > President, Florida State Genealogical Society < http://www.rootsweb com/~flsgs/ > Chair, Librarians Serving Genealogists < http://www.cas.usf edu/lis/genealib/ > P. This class is not family history related but the skills you learn can be used to create family history related documents such as ancestral time-lines and information databases, or simply for documented and footnoted histories of an individual ancestor that include photos and scanned images. Mail-merge skills can be used for family organization news letters. I have 2-4 openings only for the following class. If you are interested please reply asap to 'hold your spot' or be put on the waiting list. Folsom Cordova Adult Education Presents: Microsoft Word 2000 A ten week course beginning Thursday 3 April 2003 Location: Mercy Folsom Village 1160 Duchow, Folsom, CA Instructor: Susan H. Jackman Learn the basics of word processing in Microsoft Word 2000. This class covers everything from entering and selecting text to tables and mail-merge. Do you have a favorite font with size and color that you use a lot? Did you know that you can give it a name and store the 'character style' for ease in future use? How about creating a template from a 'document style' that you use a lot---that stores your margins, font type, heading sizes, etc! Better still, how about a 'macro' to save you time by combining a series of commands that you use a lot-into a single command. For instance: 'Click insert, Click Picture, Click From File, Select the file, click insert' saved as a 'macro' means that with the touch of a key on your keyboard you might add a 'letterhead' or other graphic located on your hard drive. Want to learn how to take names in a word table and 'merge' them into a label or envelope template for mailing purposes? How about how to use mail merge to create a personalized letter for everyone on your mailing list? Or how to create a table of information that can be sorted by name, date, place, or any other heading type! Examples of other tools covered in the ten week class are: using auto shapes, inserting and arranging photos, adding a text box, adding color to your document, adding footnotes, page numbers, headers and footers, the list goes on and on. Following is the class schedule: Week 1: Getting Started/Save and Open Documents Week 2: Change Display of Documents Week 3: Edit Text/Format Text Week 4: Format Paragraphs/Format Pages Week 5: Print Documents/Work With Multiple Documents Week 6: Work with Tables Week 7: Work with Graphics Week 8: Time Saving Features Week 9: Mail Merge Week 10: Word and the Internet

Following Steve, as an added attraction, Glenda Lloyd will make a presentation on beginning genealogical techniques. I plan to attend. See you there? Lester
Thanks Jim! I have helped several black people in the FHC over the last two weeks as a result of the missionaries being at Black History events. This will be a nice thing to point out to them. I have a VERY authentic looking one that's about 7 - 8" tall, but the "covered" part has a couple of small tears in it - it was made by an inmate at Folsom Prison around 1955 as a TV light, so is entitled to be a bit ratty I guess - after all, it IS almost 50 years old!...LOL... As long as I get it back, I'd be more than happy to loan it to you - if you're really careful with it (it fits a theme in my living room where it's on constant "display") - especially if you'll keep me in mind to help further with the NGSC in Sacto next year! (My father bought it, and when both parents died, it passed down to me) Norma Thornton Pamela Dallas wrote: > > Needed One Covered Wagon! > > Do you have a covered wagon in your closet or garage that youve been > wondering what to do with? > > Would you like to lend or donate it to the Council? > > We are in need of an authentic looking covered wagon.
