For the ninth year, the following two classes are being offered this fall at both Sierra College in Rocklin and American River College in Sacramento. SEARCH FOR YOUR ANCESTORS: An Introduction to Family History and Genealogy This class is designed for those new to family history research, or those with some experience who may wish to refresh their basic research skills. The six-session class includes five, three-hour classroom sessions plus a field trip to the Sacramento Family History Center, a local genealogical research facility. The field trip is scheduled in consultation with students early in the class sessions. This introductory class will explore the fascinating world of genealogy and family history research, America's second most popular hobby. In this class, you will learn how to begin researching your family history; how to organize and record data on charts and forms; the types of records to research; successful research strategies including identifying, locating, and searching sources; and how to evaluate data that is discovered. Many examples are used throughout the class. The use of computers, the Internet, and genealogical and other software programs in your research will also be discussed. The class includes the following six sessions: Session 1: Getting started: definitions, recording data, documenting your research Session 2: Organizing research, the five research steps, genealogical research facilities, research sources (family sources, compiled sources, original sources, U.S. census records.) Session 3: Research sources (continued): timelines; land and property records; naming practices; oral and written histories; family photographs; calendar changes; maps, atlases and gazetteers; newspaper records and obituaries; researching directories; occupational and fraternal records. Session 4: Research sources (continued): passenger lists; immigration/emigration; voting registers; naturalization records; military records; cemetery, mortuary and burial records. Session 5: Research sources (continued): court records (wills, probates, divorce, guardianships, adoptions); tax lists; school records; and medical records; record searching tips; sharing your family history; and an overview of the use of computers in genealogical research. Fee: $79 (+ $5 fee to the instructor to cover handout materials) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GENEALOGY ON THE INTERNET This class is designed for beginner and intermediate family history researchers. A basic understanding of computers and the Internet is highly recommended as this class focuses on family history research strategies on the Internet and not basic Internet skills. This is a three hour, one session class, offered in the computer lab of each school. Genealogy on the Internet is more than "surfing." It is researching, sharing, and learning to utilize new tools that were never available before! The advent of the personal computer and the Internet have made genealogical research possible on a global scale. Researchers can communicate across town or around the world, in record-breaking time. Learn what genealogical resources are available on the Internet and how to use them. We will discuss the World Wide Web, e-mail, mailing lists and newsgroups, commercial online services, tutorials, online library catalogs, and research databases (free and subscription-based). -------------- American River College, Extension Program To register, call: (916) 484-8643 (Class code #7003.301) Tuesday evening, November 18, 2003 (one session) The class will meet at the ARC Computer Lab at McClellan Park (the former McClellan Air Force Base) from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Fee: $55 (+ $1 fee to the instructor to cover handout materials) ---------- Sierra College, Community Education (Rocklin Campus) To register, call: (916) 781-0590 or (800) 242-4004, extension 2590, or online at: www.sccommed.org (directions are posted) (Class code #8489) Monday, November 17, 2003 (One session, either afternoon OR evening) The class will meet in Room RG-112 at the Roseville Gateway (the old Roseville Hospital site), 333 Sunrise Avenue, Roseville from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Another class will be held the same day at the same location from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Registration covers one class. The meeting is free and open to the public. The program speaker will be Jack Steed. His subject is, "Donner Party Rescue – Johnson Ranch." Jack is an Illinois native and came to California in 1933. He went to school in Sacramento and was a carrier flyer for the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Jack rediscovered the Johnson Ranch adobe, outside of Wheatland, California. This adobe is connected to the Donner Party that was rescued from the Sierras. In 1988, he authored the book The Donner Party Rescue Site: Johnson's Ranch on Bear River. He has led tours of this ranch and is very familiar with its history. He collects antique arms and accoutrements and speaks to historical and genealogical groups. The Placer County Genealogical Society has a membership of over 200 individuals and families that have genealogical interests. The group holds a general meeting at the Auburn library site on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7-9PM, and features a program speaker on various genealogical subjects. The group also offers two specialty day groups. One that studies various topics of member interest, which meets at the library on the first Tuesday of the month (except July and August), and the other, the Family Tree Maker User Group, reviews genealogy computer program subjects, on the second Thursday of the month. The study is not and was not designed to give any feedback to the participants !!!! All the activities and functions of the BYU Center for Molecular Genealogy has moved from the BYU campus in Provo, Utah, to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. www.smgf.org Although the intent and goals of the Molecular Genealogy Research Project remain unchanged, the operations associated with the collection and analysis of DNA samples and genealogical records will be conducted by the Foundation who will be the primary sponsor of the project They have the following for an FAQ Will I receive any personal feedback from participating in the MGRP? Not at this time. Federal regulations require research studies to be anonymous and that the privacy of the participants be protected. For these reasons, each sample is coded and no personal identifiers of individuals born within the last 100 years are used in building the database. No personal genetic or genealogical information used in this study that might jeopardize the privacy of those that have participated in it will be released to anyone, including the participants in the study. All the activities and functions of the BYU Center for Molecular Genealogy has moved from the BYU campus in Provo, Utah, to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although the intent and goals of the Molecular Genealogy Research Project remain unchanged, the operations associated with the collection and analysis of DNA samples and genealogical records will be conducted by the Foundation who will be the primary sponsor of the project. We anticipate the project to progress with greater efficiency as a result of consolidating all personnel and resources into a single location. They would like to have a complete biological pedigree chart with names, places and dates of birth. Ideally, we would like to receive a GEDCOM file with up to 8 generations of ancestry (beginning with the donor as generation number one). However, anyone that can submit a minimum of four complete generations on paper or disk can participate. Can I submit more than four generations to the MGRP database? Yes. Four complete biological generations is the minimum required to be eligible to participate in the research stage of the project. However, we encourage participants to submit as many generations as they have, on paper or on a diskette as a GEDCOM file. Individuals that have already participated in the MGRP database and would like to add more genealogical information to the one they submitted at the time of the DNA collection can do so by sending it to: The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation 2511 South West Temple Salt Lake City, UT 84115 (USA) Please indicate the name of the participant and the place where the sample was submitted. Organize a MGRP event in your area: Representatives of the MGRP will travel anywhere in the US where a group of 200+ is willing to participate in the construction of the worldwide genetic/genealogy database. Those who are interested in organizing such groups will receive written instructions, a video, and additional material that will explain how to proceed. You may request this material by writing to the Sorenson Molecular <mailto:info@smgf.org> Genealogy Foundation, or by calling (801) 461-9783. Please, contact us to discuss the possibility of collecting samples internationally. I hope you are having a fine day ! Seeking Jesus' will in my life ! Many of the lessons are geared for beginners eGenConference Registration Price: $69.95 (If you purchased the content separately it would cost over $400 two of the lessons have poor sound quality After further analysis 1. about 1/3 of the courses are from The Genealogy School run by Karen Clifford she sells these lessons for $12.95 each And would sell for around $150 2. the rest are new production and for a comparison the latest NGS recorded 5/28/2003 at Pittsburgh, PA USA. http://www.audiotapes.com/conf.asp?ProductCon=89 sell for $8.50 per lecture (no handouts) I hope you are having a fine day ! I will gladly refund your money...or if you would like to view the other lessons that are coming on line and after that still feel that you would like a refund I will gladly accommodate you...thanks al. I have listened to many of your sessions and feel that I have been deceived and cheated. There are only a few sessions which are not old recycled lessons. Most of the conference is just your old lessons from Karens online school. The quality of the sound is poor and I am barely able to understand many of the presenters Where do I go for a refund ?
