History Detectives broadcasts coming soon on PBS on KVIE Channel 6. : Sheridan's House; Mark Twain Watch; Prisoner Poem Sep 2, 3:00PM Sep 3, 2:00AM, Sep 3, 5:00AM The Love Dish; Rebel Gun; Prison Plaque Sep 8, 8:00PM, Sep 9, 1:00AM, Sep 9, 5:00AM History Detectives, a new television series from PBS, consists of 10 episodes. Each episode presents three mysteries for viewers to explore. The hosts of the program are renowned experts in the world of historical investigations and are devoted to solving historical mysteries, searching out the true facts (and falsehoods) behind local folklore, family legends and interesting objects. The investigation of each mystery or "puzzle from the past" can follow dozens of different paths. As the detectives work, they provide viewers with explanations for choosing specific avenues of research. When the detectives use scientific tests, both the purpose and the methods are described in detail. Here are two examples of the type of cases that are explored: * The Place: Jack's house, Oregon The Case: Was this watch a gift from noted American author, Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain to prominent Oregonian Captain Ainsworth? His grandson Jack asks the history detectives to follow the trail of these two adventurous men to find out. * The Place: Salem, Oregon The Case: Where did this Revolutionary War poem, recently discovered in an antique trunk, come from? Did the author, an American prisoner of war sent to England write it there and how did his poem travel for over two centuries, across the sea and a nation, to end up in Oregon? The History Detectives are on the case. To find out if and when the TV series will be broadcast in your area visit, http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/about/index.html#tune and type your state or zip code in the fields provided at the bottom of the page. The History Detectives Web site includes highlights from the televised investigations. The site then branches out so that visitors can study the techniques used by professional investigators and learn how to conduct their own historical investigation. Visitors are also encouraged to submit their own mysteries. The History Detectives Web site is located at http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/ Special thanks to Ken Craft of Norcross, GA for calling the Web site and the TV series to UpFront's attention! A perfect opportunity to visit Fort Wayne, Indiana and research in this large and growing collection. SOME RUMORS YOU MAY HAVE HEARD: I HEARD THE LIBRARY WAS CLOSED The entire Main Library including the Historical Genealogy Department is open! Every department moved to our interim location at 200 E. I HEARD THE GENEALOGY COLLECTION IS NOT AVAILABLE The entire genealogy collection, materials from across the United States, Canada, Great Britain and other locales, is available and ready for your perusal. In fact, one of the most exciting things is that the collection is now a browsing collection. This means you can walk the stacks and stacks of genealogical research materials, finding things you never thought you would find. The entire genealogy collection is available. There is NOTHING stored away -everything is accessible. All our research materials can by used here at our location. All our books, microfilm and periodicals are available. SPECIAL RESOURCES / SPEICAL EVENTS In addition to our deep collection, patrons can also order microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City for a small fee for use here in our library. If you live within a day's drive of Fort Wayne, this is a great benefit to you. Not only can you order microfilm resources from Salt Lake City, when combined with the collection here in Fort Wayne, the research opportunities are outstanding. October is Family History Month. This year, we would enjoy having you come to Fort Wayne to do research and join in the special events offered by the Genealogy Department. These events include lectures on specific research resources, information about the ACPL genealogy collection, and special topics, presented by the staff of the Historical Genealogy Department. OUR WEBSITE Visit our website www.acpl.lib.in.us to search our library catalog to discover what we have in store for your specific research needs. At our home page, click on library catalog, enter your search term (surname + the word family, geographic location, author, title, or keyword), and find the treasures that await you here in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Scroll down to the bottom of the home page, click on "Genealogy Gateway" to get an overview of the material housed in this world-renowned collection. We'd enjoy having you visit us! Questions? Have you ever been asked to present a Family History lecture or Family Reunion Presentation and wished you had PowerPoint skills? Folsom Cordova Adult Education is offering a 10 week course on Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. Following are examples of how you might use these programs to further your Family History Research and increase your presentation skills: ___________________________________ Ancestry Daily News, 07 August 2003 Ancestry Quick Tip 'I just wanted to share an idea I am trying to organize information on possible leads to my brick wall family-the Kentucky Nelsons of the early 1800s. I have entered all the Nelson tidbits I have found into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. I include columns for surname, first and middle names, county of record, type of record, date of record, source, and others named in record. The handy feature of using Excel is that I can resort my chart using any column, so that I can compare the names found in Bath County records, or all the records about Moses Nelson at will. The brick wall is still standing, but by the time it falls I may be able to declare myself the expert on all Nelsons in Kentucky in the early 1800s. (I think that they may, to a large extent, be related as they certainly favored the same first names!!!)' Sharon Hanlon _____________________________ PowerPoint can be used to easily create colorful overhead transparencies or animated slide shows broadcast from your computer via computer projector. Following is an example of a PowerPoint Presentation uploaded to a family history site. IMPORTANT, when the page loads, do not use the 'click here to start' link, rather look to the bottom right of the page and click on 'download presentation source.' This may take a few minutes. When the slide show loads, use your right and left arrow keys to navigate through the presentation. http://home.comcast.net/~susanjackman/bfh/bfhadd/ ___________________________________________ THERE ARE ONLY 5 OPENINGS LEFT FOR THIS 10 WEEK COURSE in Folsom WHICH BEGINS THURSDAY 11 SEPTEMBER. There is a new virus which is attacking machines in Sacramento It makes your computer reboot constantly And Microsoft has a free patch which will stop it http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp Paul Kirkum has it and called a local repair shop who said he has a machine in the shop which he is working on which also has it we just downloaded the patch and I ran it on my machine ! Details below A buffer overrun on the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) interfase allows the execution of arbitrary code. The Remote Procedure Call allows the interchange of data between equipment and is present by default on the TCP protocol, port 135, on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It's a vulnerability on the module of the RPC that interchanges messages over TCP/IP; if a message is not created correctly (or maliciously created), it could permit that an attacker executes any code with local privileges. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker just has to establish a connection TCP/IP to the remote RPC "Endpoint Mapper" and send the malformed message, that produces a buffer overrun on memory. It could execute programs, read and delete data, or create new user accounts with all the privileges. You must download inmediately the patch MS03-026, from one of the following addresses. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/MS03-026.asp One possible symptom of an attack on Windows XP is the message: "Windows must now restart because the remote procedure call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly".
