    1. Invite a friend to Sacramento
    2. Barbara Leak
    3. Do you have relatives or friends in faraway places who are similarly interested in your family genealogy? Why not contact them now and invite them to come stay in your spare bedroom next May during the NGS Conference here in Sacramento! The dates are 19-22 May 2004. A visit to Sacramento will give them the opportunity to attend the National Genealogical Society conference without having to worry about hotel reservations. And besides, you could all gain knowledge of your family's roots. We'll be keeping you posted on the deadline for the early-bird registration fee, which hasn't yet been announced. You can save money by planning ahead and paying when the fee is at its lowest. You and your family members or friends can drive together to the closest Light Rail station, park there, then ride into downtown, with only two blocks to walk from the Light Rail stop to the Convention Center. Presenters at NGS conferences are impressive. You and your family or friends really shouldn't miss this opportunity to experience the whole shootin' match right here in our own back yard. The Sacramento 2004 web site is coming soon at www.ngsgenealogy.org. Stay tuned for more exciting details. Please feel free to pass along this message to your friends, relatives and other genealogy mailing lists, or to reprint it in your society's newsletter. Barbara Leak, Publicity Chair with thanks to Shirley Riemer, Sacramento German Genealogy Society, for this fun and friendly idea. Is it still OK for people from Auburn area to take classes at the Rancho Codova Adult Education? Are you going to be teaching your Beginning Legacy class this next Winter/Spring?  Jan-Mar? What are the dates? I am considering getting up a carpool from the Auburn area, but I need to get a query in the next Placer County Genealogical Society newsletter, which has a November 1 deadline for submissions.  We do not publish a December newsletter, and the January newsletter would be to late for making plans.   Thank you, Bobbie McClellan mamabobi@foothill.net (530) 885-2684

    1. New Worm Masquerades As Security Update
    2. James L Rader
    3. I received 5 emails which have the attachment yesterday When you get email which appears to come from Microsoft and it has an attachment Don't open the attachment it is the worm New Worm Masquerades As Security Update By Gregg Keizer, TechWeb News A new worm that tries to take advantage of Windows users anxious to get their hands on security updates began making the rounds on Thursday, several antivirus firms confirmed. The worm, which goes by a variety of names, including Swen, W32/Swen@MM, Gibe, and W32/Gibe-F, can pose as an e-mail from Microsoft bearing a bogus security update as a file attachment. It spreads in several ways, including the traditional mass-mailing method of stealing addresses from Outlook address books on compromised machines, but also propagates over Internet Relay Chat and peer-to-peer networks such as Kazaa. Successful infections attempt to steal account information, including usernames and passwords. The worm also exploits a 2-year-old vulnerability in Windows--for which a fix is available from Microsoft--that allows it to auto-execute on unpatched PCs. In those situations, the receiving system is infected even if its user doesn't open the attached file. Most anti-virus vendors have tagged Swen as a relatively low risk. Symantec rates it as only a 2 on its 1-through-5 scale, while both Trend Micro and Network Associates list it as "low," although Network Associates ranks it as a "medium" threat to home users. "Swen preys upon the good nature of individuals who want to patch their computer in the wake of new vulnerability and virus announcements," said Ken Dunham, the malicious code intelligence manager at security firm iDefense. Antivirus software suppliers have already posted updates to their products' definition files to detect Swen. I hope you are having a fine day ! Seeking Jesus' will in my life ! 3. PLACER COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PO BOX 7385 AUBURN, CA 95604 Voice Mail (530) 887-2646 www.pcgenes.com/pcgs.html PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 18, 2003 Free "How to Begin" Genealogy Seminar Offered The Placer County Genealogical Society is again sponsoring a free seminar to the general public on beginning genealogy. "Tracing Your Family Tree – How to Begin" will lead attendees through the process of how to do research, document and keep records in recording one’s family historical data. This year’s seminar will be held on Saturday, October 11th, from 9:00AM to 3:00PM, at the Beecher Room of the Auburn-Placer County Library at 350 Nevada St., in Auburn. Doing genealogical research on your family roots can be a very rewarding hobby. You never know what bits of lost history about your ancestors you will suddenly find. Placer County is rich in historical history of early pioneers trying to strike it rich in the foothills we now call "Gold Country." Where did these people come from and where did they go? How did you and your family end up in the west? Do you know who all your cousins are? All these questions are what stimulate our curiosity to learn more about our roots. The seminar program will show you various record keeping forms, how to organize your work and methods of researching from home through written or e-mail correspondence. It will also show you where to find research information on the Internet, where you may find research resources in various libraries and how to find historical documents and other sources of family data. This free seminar on beginning genealogy is open to the general public, however, space is limited and reservations are required. An optional handbook will be available for $10. You are encouraged to also bring a sack lunch. For reservations, call (530) 887-2646 or e-mail your name and number of persons attending to kin2barb@surewest.net. The Placer County Genealogical Society has a membership of over 200 members. It holds a general meeting at the library on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7-9PM, featuring a program speaker on various genealogical subjects. It also offers two specialty day groups, one that studies subjects of member interest and the other, a Family Tree Maker User Group, that discuss use of this genealogy data base program with hands on demonstrations.
