Learn what genealogical resources are available on the Internet and how to use them. Callifornia DHS UPDATE: Department of Health Services Public Count will be closed as of November 25, 2003 due to Budget Cuts. Officially, last Friday, the administrative order was announced that the Counter will be closed to walk-in applications for vital records and six Department employees will be reassigned. Budget 'cuts to the bone' are cited as the reason the Department of Health Services management has decided that the Public Counter should be closed, in spite of the fact that this is one of the operations that brings revenue into the Department. The reasons, we can all speculate upon, but the fact is that this move will not only affect genealogist and researchers, but the public in general. This includes those who need to obtain birth certificates for children beginning school, college registration, and passports. The one light at the end of the tunnel is that most California County offices will continue to be open for walk-in requests for birth, death, marriage, divorce documents. The Dapartment states that the turn-around time will be four weeks. What, if anything, can be done about this remains to be seen. It is hopeful that with the change of Administration in the Governor's office and new appointees, we may see changes in policy. At this point we can only wait and see. We will continue to monitor the situation. If and when efforts on our part could make a difference, I will let you know. I will stay on top of this problem. The group holds a general meeting at the Auburn library site on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7-9PM, and features a program speaker on various genealogical subjects. The Society also offers two specialty day groups. One that studies various topics of member interest and has a day gathering at the library each month except July, August and December. Beginning with the January 2004 meeting, this group’s regular meeting day will change to the second Monday of each month. The other group, the Family Tree Maker User Group, reviews genealogy computer program subjects, on the second Thursday of each month, at the Latter Day Saints Church, 1255 Bell Road, in Auburn. The Society maintains a web site at www.pcgenes.com/pcgs.html where details of these meetings can be found as well as other research references and announcements.
*** PBS History Detective is Keynote Speaker at Sacramento Conference *** Tukufu Zuberi, Ph.D., is the keynote speaker for the opening session of the 2004 NGS Conference. Dr. Zuberi achieved celebrity status earlier this year as one of four experts on the new PBS series *History Detectives*. In case you missed it, the show is devoted to solving historical mysteries, searching out the true facts (and falsehoods) behind local folklore, family legends and interesting objects. Dr. Zuberi's expertise is in revealing the historical context and social issues that triggered the motives of the people involved in each mystery. On an academic level, Dr. Zuberi is a Professor of Sociology and the Director of the Center for Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He has a local connection, having received his Masters degree in Sociology from California State University, Sacramento. *History Detectives* returns to PBS tonight, Sunday, November 16, at 5:00 pm on KVIE Channel 6 (Sacramento). Dr. Zuberi returns to Sacramento on Wednesday, May 19, for the Opening Session of "A Golden Prospect," the NGS Annual Conference 2004.
