    1. California specialties at NGS conference
    2. Barbara Leak
    3. A major genealogical event is coming to Sacramento in May!!! The National Genealogical Society (NGS) Conference in the States -- 19-22 May 2004. Full-color, 20-page registration brochures for the NGS Conference are in the mail and will be available at research libraries, family history centers and genealogical society meetings soon. This year's conference has some exciting offerings for people interested in California history and genealogy. One of the featured speakers is J.S. Holliday. Associated with UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library, the California Historical Society and the Oakland Museum of California, Mr. Holliday is a noted California Gold Rush historian and author of *The World Rushed In: The California Gold Rush Experience* and *Rush for Riches: Gold Fever and the Making of California*. The title of his conference presentation is "Far from Home and Family: The Origins of California's Risk-taking Culture." It's about the wild and adventuresome lifestyle of the men who came to the Gold Rush, far from the moral influence of their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. Also of special interest to California researchers are the following classes: "California Gold Rush" "Research Facilities in the Golden State" both presented by Chuck Knuthson. Chuck is a native of northern California with deep roots in the gold country. He is webmaster of the Sierra County GenWeb site. "Did Your Ancestors' Siblings Take YOUR Family Papers to California?" by Sheila Benedict, CGRS. Sheila is a professional researcher from southern California specializing in California records. "Using California Records to Find Southern U.S. Ancestors" by J. Mark Low, CG. President of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Mark brings to his lecture the perspective of the importance of researching California records even if you don't live in California. Other classes pertinent to tracing the ancestry of Californians are on westward migration, railroad records and land records, especially federal land records. This is only the third time in more than 20 years that the NGS Conference has been held in California, and it won't be back any time soon. If you live in California, this is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to experience a national conference without expensive travel costs. If you live in another state, but have a California roots, this is the perfect excuse to visit the home of your ancestors. 1. CALIFORNIA SLAVERY ARCHIVE GOES ON LINE- Feb 17
    2. Barbara Leak
    3. This sounds interesting. Barbara http://www.csus.edu/news/021104launches.stm February 11, 2004 CSUS launches California slavery archive California's little-known history of slavery will be a click away when California State University, Sacramento's Underground Railroad Digital Archive project goes online on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Launched as part of the University's celebration of Black History Month, the archive will use high-quality digital images of letters, journals, photographs, documents, newspapers and more to tell the often-overlooked experiences of African-American slaves in California and the new state's involvement in the Underground Railroad. Beginning Tuesday it can be found at digital.lib.csus.edu/curr <http://digital.lib.csus.edu/curr/>. The collection brings together materials collected from around the state and includes a bibliography of more than 1,000 documents related to 19th-century African-American history in California and the West Coast. "It's a growing process and this is just the beginnings of it," Joe Moore, organizer of the archive project, said. "We'll be adding to it constantly." Although California was admitted to the Union as a free state in 1850, slavery was winked at in the early years. Slave owners openly held blacks in bondage and at least one city--Sacramento--held public auctions where African-Americans were bought and sold. The state, however, also attracted abolitionists, both black and white, who worked to free enslaved blacks, often sending them north to British Columbia. In one well known case, Archy Lee, a slave from Mississippi, successfully sued for his freedom when his master threatened to send him back. Moore said that visitors to the digital archive will be able to see how the trial was reported in local newspapers. "You'll be able to track how the trial progressed and what took place here in Sacramento," Moore said. The CSUS Library archive is one part of the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program, a interpretive program that looks at how blacks and some whites worked together to help Southern slaves escape to freedom in the North and West as well as Canada, Mexico, Europe and the Caribbean. The University's archive will be linked to similar projects across the nation and is funded through a $132,000 federal grant administered by the California State Library. For more information, contact Moore at (916) 278-7302. Media assistance is available from CSUS public affairs at (916) 278-6156.

    1. URGENT: Monday19th Jan Family History Class in Folsom moved to Wed
    2. Susan H. Jackman
    3. Please ignore this message if you are not in my class!!! This is my best shot at notifying the Beginning Family History Class in Folsom that the classroom where we meet will be closed tomorrow. The Manager of Mercy Folsom Villiage notified me that she made a mistake and they WILL be closed tomorrow. This is not the first time something like this has happened with this facility...I have absolutely no control over my teaching situation there. It is VERY annoying, especially times like this. She put a tiny little post it note on some of my papers in my thursday class. I thought sure she was talking about February but she was talking January. We will meet on Wednesday at the same time: 9-12. I will be there to turn away those who do not get this message and to post a note for latecomers about the Wednesday class. If you know any of the students who may not get this message via email could you please let them know? Also, could you please reply when you get this.... Thanks, Susan Jackman

II. Bit of Blarney in our Film Festival 3/13 & 14! 7th Sacramento Jewish Film Festival Hits the Big Screen March 13 & 14, 2004! Our 7th Annual Sacramento Jewish Film Festival which will take place at the historic Crest Theatre Saturday March 13, 2004 (post Shabbat) and Sunday March 14, 2004. This years' festival brings 3 feature films, an Academy Award Nominated short film and a live musical performance by Ceilizemer. The festival opens Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. with a reception featuring an Israeli hot kosher buffet with wines, desserts. Following the reception at 8:30 p.m. is the opening night film "A Trumpet in The Wadi". "A Trumpet In The Wadi" which received the Best Film Honor from the Haifa Film Festival 2001 is an Israeli Romeo and Juliet love story set against the backdrop of Middle Eastern tensions. The following day, Sunday March 14, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. we are proud to bring a new print of the 1937 Yiddish language film "The Vow" coupled with the 2001 the short film "One Day Crossing". "The Vow", which has been recently restored by the National Center on Jewish Film, is a classic tale of love, fate and mysticism based on the ancient folk tale The Dybbuk. "One Day Crossing", which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Film, tells the poignant story of a Hungarian Jewish girl, who poses as a Christian to try to save her family from the Nazis. Shot in black and white the film is evocative of the 1944 era in which it is set. Wrapping up the Festival at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday March 14 is the documentary film "Shalom Ireland" coupled with a live performance by Ceilizemer (ceili, Gaelic for Irish musical party; zemer, Hebrew for song; pronounced KAY-lee-ZE-mer), the band who provided the musical soundtrack for the film "Shalom Ireland". "Shalom Ireland" is Valerie Lapin's fascinating look at the little known history of the Jewry of Ireland. 1. Family History Web Site Class in Folsom---looks like it is on!
    2. Susan H. Jackman
    3. Have had a good response for a last minute HTML class. Still have openings for 3 or 4 people. If you are interested PLEASE attend this first class tomorrow.......an email me so I know you are coming! Folsom Cordova Adult Education Winter Semester Easy HTML: Creating a Web Site...From Scratch! Instructor: Susan H. Jackman $40-- or $30 for seniors. This ten week class will be held Thursdays 9-12 at: Mercy Folsom Village Apartments 1160 Duchow in Folsom From 50 take Folsom Blvd exit turn left on Folsom BLVD right on Blue Ravine, left on East Bidwell and right on Wales. Take the next left (Duchow). The apartment building is on the left. Go through the glass double doors and the computer lab is on the right. Original email message below...... Looking for 10 people for a 'quick recruit' class beginning THIS Thursday the 8th of January in FOLSOM for 10 weeks from 9 to 12. The computer lab at Mercy-Folsom Villiage is in the process of upgrading to Windows NT so Windows 98 is out and we are in need of a class. Some of you from past Family History Classes have expressed a desire to learn how to create a web site. It's TIME! Bring in your family information and ancestral photos and together we will create. If you would like to be one of TEN for this 'hands on' HTML class PLEASE respond asap. If we do not have 10 people there on Thursday the class will not happen! We will create in class 'from scratch' a web site that can be uploaded to the Internet using HTML. This is SO FUN! DO THIS: get online and find one of your favorite web sites. RIGHT-CLICK anywhere on the page and then click on 'view source.' You will see the 'guts' of the web page you are currently viewing. Look for key words like 'background color= blue.' This is an example of how easy it is to create the background color for your web page. Do not be discouraged when you see lots of phrases you don't understand. HTML is like a language of sorts. We will learn to 'speak' the basics and then add a few 'bells and whistles' in this ten week course. We will type in the 'text' and then save it as HTML. The page appears like MAGIC. We will be using a text book called 'Teach Yourself HTML Visually.' The book actually shows pictures of each computer screen shot showing you where to click and what to do. Hardly any words in the book; just lots of pictures (my favorite way to learn). At the end of the first 3 hour session each one of you will have created your own 'Web Page' with unique font, background color, and graphics. Just think what we can do with the other 27 hours!!! Please let me know if you can attend (yes, I am having fun). Susan Jackman
