This special meeting will be held in the Gardenia Room at Sacramento’s Sheraton Grand Hotel. Come by 6:30 p.m. to socialize. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will feature a presentation by a German research specialist from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, a presentation on “The Eleven Commandments for Conducting German Family History Research” and much more. The luncheon speaker will be Marion Wolfert, one of SGGS’s most delightful and informative speakers. Entrance to the SGGS monthly meetings is free and visitors are welcome. Guests and members are encouraged to arrive for the meeting a half-hour early, to allow themselves time to browse the society’s informational tables, which feature German genealogy-related books for sale, pedigree charts and other genealogical aids, German reference and library tools and back issues of the society’s quarterly “Der Blumenbaum.” And there are always mentors in attendance who share your interests and are eagerly awaiting a chance to discuss German genealogy, answer your questions and compare notes on research. 1. Old Sacramento County Hospital Cemetery
    2. James L. Rader
    3. From: Sue Silver [mailto:ssilver1951@jps.net] Sent: Friday, March 12, 2004 8:13 AM To: CASCLARA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CASantaClara] Old Sacramento County Hospital Cemetery Greetings, While working on construction for their new Cancer Center this past Tuesday, UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento unearthed two sets of human remains from the old Sacramento County Hospital Cemetery. Despite the fact that both the county board of supervisors and the medical center knew the cemetery was there, the county transferred the land to the center in 1973. Davis intends to call these "archaeological remains" instead of bodies from the old cemetery. In this way they may be able to circumvent California law that requires certain steps be taken to relocate remains such as these. The county should have relocated the cemetery to another cemetery before handing the property over to UC Davis. Instead, now thirty years later, UC Davis claims to be surprised to have "solved" the mystery of the missing hospital cemetery! Please help me to persuade the county and the medical center to follow California law so that these past citizens of California will get a decent reburial elsewhere. There are about 57 other old county hospital cemeteries elsewhere in California that have the potential to suffer this same fate. Please cut and paste the following message and send to Sacramento County District 2 Supervisor Illa Collin at collini@saccounty.net . You can also fax it to her at (916) 874-7593. Or you can call her office at (916) 874-5481. ********************************************* Honorable Illa Collin, District 2 Supervisor County of Sacramento 700 H Street, Suite 2450 Sacramento, CA 95814 Dear Supervisor Collin: I have learned about the "discovery" of the old County Hospital Cemetery during the construction of the new wing of the UC Davis Cancer Center on Stockton Blvd. I understand the County should have relocated the entire cemetery before transferring this land to UC Davis, but didn't. Please help ensure that the remains that the county buried in its hospital cemetery are properly respected. Please work with UC Davis to relocate all the bodies as required by California Health and Safety Code section 8000 et seq. Sincerely, [Your Name, Address, phone number and Email address.] *********************************************** Thank you for your assistance on this very important matter. 3. Sacramento German Genealogy Society P. O. Box 660061 Sacramento CA 95866-0081 OK FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Upcoming meetings of the Sacramento German Genealogy Society The next meeting of the Sacramento German Genealogy Society will be on Tuesday, March 23, at 1:00 p.m., at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Lusk Drive at St. Mark’s Way in Sacramento. Speaker Chuck Knuthson will present “A Family History Treasure: World War I Draft Registration Records.” Knuthson, having studied at Brigham Young University, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and the National Institute on Genealogical Research, is currently pursuing certification as a professional genealogist. At the April 27 meeting, Suzanne Hanson and Emily Gann will present “Hidden Treasures for Genealogists: German Lutheran Church Records in the United States.” On Tuesday, May 18, SGGS will hold an evening meeting planned to coincide with the National Genealogical Society’s Conference, which will be held in Sacramento May 19 through 22. SGGS will also sponsor a luncheon during the NGS Conference, on Wednesday, May 19, which must be signed up for through the NGS, although those attending only the luncheon do not have to register for the NGS Conference. If you have questions about the society, e-mail President Charles V. Knuthson at cknuthson@surewest.net or call him at (916) 782-5704 or contact the society’s website at www.SacGerGenSoc.org.
