The California State Archives continues to serve in the spirit of those early instructions, providing a repository for the states permanent governmental records as well as other materials documenting California history. The California State Archives occupies a state-of-the-art facility one block south of the State Capitol. Completed in 1995, the 170,000 sq. ft. building was designed to meet the space needs of the Archives for the next 50 years. Six floors of environmentally controlled stacks, including several specialized vaults house the Archives growing collection. The meeting is free and open to the public. The program speaker this month will be Pam Dallas. Her subject will be: "Double Dating and the Calendar Change." Genealogists rely on dates, i.e., precise dates, to keep them on the right research track, test theories and help prove conclusions. But what if the calendar changed? What if two jurisdictions were using different calendars? What if the method of determining the date changed? Understanding the calendar change can be critical to a genealogist's success. Those attending should expect to learn some calendar history and discover why double dating might be for them. The Placer County Genealogical Society has a membership of over 200 that is made up of individuals and families that have historical and genealogical interests.
