    3. PLACER COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PO BOX 7385, AUBURN, CA 95604 Voice Mail (530) 887-2646 www.pcgenes.com/pcgs.html PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (October 8, 2004) Free "How to Begin" Genealogy Seminar Reminder The Placer County Genealogical Society is reminding the public of its annual free seminar, "Tracing Your Family Tree - How to Begin," which will be held on Saturday, October 16th, from 9:00AM to 3:00PM, at the Beecher Room of the Auburn-Placer County Library at 350 Nevada St., in Auburn. On site registration begins at 8:30AM, however, advance registration is encouraged because of limited seating. The seminar will lead attendees through the process of how to do research, document and keep records in recording one's family historical data. Doing genealogical research on your family roots can be a very rewarding hobby. You never know what bits of lost history about your ancestors you will suddenly find. Placer County is rich in historical history of early pioneers trying to strike it rich in the foothills we now call "Gold Country." Where did these people come from and where did they go? How did you and your family end up in the west? Do you know who all your cousins are? All these questions are what stimulate our curiosity to learn more about our roots. The seminar is free, but there will be an optional handbook available for $10. There will be a short lunch break and attendees might want to bring a sack lunch. For reservations, leave a message at (530) 887-2646 or e-mail your name and number of persons attending to kin2barb@surewest.net. The Placer County Genealogical Society has a membership of over 200 members from all around the country. It holds a general meeting at the library on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7-9PM, and features a program speaker on various genealogical subjects. It also offers two specialty day groups, one that studies various subjects of member interest and the other that reviews computer data base program subjects. 1. Legislation to Restrict Access to Birth Records
    2. Marilyn Larson
    3. The following article was in today's "Ancestry Daily News". Marilyn Larson - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Immediate Action Requested Legislation in Congress Seeks to Restrict Access to Birth Records; FGS Recommends Writing to Your Congressional Representatives The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill, House Resolution 10 (H.R. 10), which seeks to restrict access to birth certificates. This bill, which purpose is to respond to the threat of terrorism, is on a fast track to passage and has been voted on by several committees already. Your help is needed now. David Rencher, Chairman of the Record Access and Preservation Committee, a joint committee of the National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies, has sent a letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman Dennis Hastert, recommending an amendment to the bill as follows: "However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates, or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record." A copy of the letter is available on the FGS site at www.fgs.org/rpa/formalactions.htm. To view this bill, go to http://thomas.loc.gov. Enter HR 10 in the search box for "Bill Number." Action Is Needed Now Because this bill is moving toward passage so quickly, it is urged that the genealogical community take action immediately and let their representatives know that they are in support of David Rencher's amendment and the FGS position in this important matter. To find your state representative's contact information, go to www.house.gov/writerep/. How Should I Word My Letter? While you should word the letter in any way that is comfortable for you, it is recommended that you include the following as a portion of the letter: "While I support the intention to increase security to protect the U.S. from terrorists and those who wish to improperly take U.S. identities, I am concerned that those researching their family's history continue to have access to non-certified birth records. Therefore, in order to support HR-10 I ask that you amend HR-10 Section 3063(d)(2) by adding the following wording to the existing paragraph: 'However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record.' I believe that this additional language is imperative so that the states do not react by restricting all certificates to comply with the law, rather than dealing with certified as opposed to non-certified birth certificates. This proposed amendatory language would remind them that they can and should be treated differently." My E-mail is protected by Norton Anti-Virus 2003

Just thought you'd like to know--Holly Hansen News Release Contact for information: Walt Fuller/President & Publisher Everton Publishing Company, Inc. PO Box 368 Logan, UT 84323-0368 435.752.6022 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Everton Publishing Company announces new ownership and management, a major reorganization, and public access to the vast, previously unavailable Everton Genealogical Library. Logan, Utah, September 25, 2004 - The November/December 2004 issue of Everton's Genealogical Helper represents a very important step for the new management and ownership of a company that has long been an icon and leader within the genealogical community. It will give us a chance to demonstrate our resolute commitment to provide genealogists with the absolute finest in quality, accessible educational information, materials and programs, the most comprehensive and technologically advanced research methods, databases and resources, and a wide range of options to memorialize or publish research results. We are a team of experienced genealogists and publishers, dedicated to revitalizing the Everton tradition and earning a reputation as a company that can be trusted to provide invaluable, decisive assistance with genealogical research efforts. In order to earn this trust and confidence, the inaugural issue of the revitalized Genealogical Helper will offer a preview of what the new Everton will offer - and then we will prove that we will deliver on everything and more, that we promise. For our valued subscribers, be assured that we will honor each and every issue of the magazine that has been paid for and not received. For our valued advertisers, we will honor and publish each and every ad that has been paid for but has yet to appear. The Genealogical Helper will provide all the educational content, features and sources of the magazine when it was the most popular, widely read publication in the industry. Holly Hansen will return as Editor. There will be regular features on the latest in research technology and resources, the content and public access to the 60,000+ volume Everton Genealogical Library, and in-depth articles from our readers, as well as professional genealogists. We will expand the book review section and continuing education will once again be emphasized. And please - we welcome the suggestions of our readers regarding the content and format of the Genealogical Helper. Perhaps the most exciting announcement we can make is that the content of the 60,000+ volumes, pedigree charts, manuscripts, periodicals, etc., contained in the Everton Genealogical Library, will for the first time be available as part of a public library resource. The new owners of Everton are primarily responsible for securing the donation of the Everton Library to the City of Logan Library System. The Library will be open and available to the public within a year, and through Everton Publishing Company the contents of the Library will be available online. Until the necessary scanning takes place, there will be options for remote access to this invaluable collection. We will also hold regular conferences and workshops that will revolve around the Library. As for other products and services, The Handybook for Genealogists, 11th Edition will be published within the next 12 months and will be the most extensively revised edition in years. Stay tuned for more information on updates and new features. We will also offer a wide range of publishing options to both genealogical associations and individuals interested in acquiring reprints of prized publications, or publishing original editions or revisions of family or area genealogical histories. We encourage the genealogical community and all those with an interest in researching and preserving family history to send Everton Publishing Company their comments, via phone or letter. Call and ask about any of our publications, products and services, or the Library. We want your thoughts and suggestions. We want to hear from as many of you as possible. Again, we are dedicated to providing every family history researcher and the genealogical industry with exactly what they need. A basic understanding of computers and the Internet is highly recommended as this class focuses on family history research strategies on the Internet and not basic Internet skills. This is a three hour, one session class, offered in the computer lab of each school. Genealogy on the Internet is more than surfing. It is researching, sharing, and learning to utilize new technology that was never available before! The advent of the personal computer and the Internet have made genealogical research possible on a global scale. Researchers can communicate across town or around the world, in record breaking time. Learn what genealogical resources are available on the Internet and how to use them. We will discuss the World Wide Web, e-mail, mailing lists and newsgroups, commercial online services, tutorials, online library catalogs, some of the many online research databases (free and subscription-based), and genealogy software. Sierra College, Community Education (Rocklin Campus) To register, call: (916) 781-0590 or (800) 242-4004, extension 2590, or online at: www.sccommed.org (directions are posted) (Class code #8489) Wednesday afternoon, December 8, 2004 (one 3-hour session) The class will meet from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Room RG-112 at the Roseville Gateway (the former Roseville Hospital site), 333 Sunrise Avenue, Roseville. PLACER COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PO BOX 7385, AUBURN, CA 95604 Voice Mail (530) 887-2646 www.pcgenes.com/pcgs.html PRESS RELEASE FOR PUBLICATION THE WEEK OF: - September 27, 2004 Free "How to Begin" Genealogy Seminar Offered The Placer County Genealogical Society is again offering its annual free seminar to the general public on beginning genealogy. "Tracing Your Family Tree - How to Begin," will lead attendees through the process of how to do research, document and keep records in recording one's family historical data. This year's seminar will be held on Saturday, October 16th, from 9:00AM to 3:00PM, at the Beecher Room of the Auburn-Placer County Library at 350 Nevada St., in Auburn. Registration opens at 8:30AM. This free seminar on beginning genealogy is open to the general public, however, space is limited and reservations are recommended. An optional handbook will be available for $10. You are encouraged to also bring a sack lunch. The Society maintains a web site at www.pcgenes.com/pcgs.html FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT: Barbara Leak, Seminar Chairperson (530) 887-2646
