FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Northern California Chapter of Germans from Russia Heritage Society will meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, 2005, in the Fellowship Hall at St. John's Lutheran Church, 17th and L Streets, Sacramento. The program will be "Selected Tales about the Germans from Russia," presented by Vice President George Niesl. Most of the tables that will be read to you were presented over many years to various groups by the late Reuben Goertz, an outstanding folklorist. Goertz, whose parents settled in Freeman, SD, was of Mennonite background, and he shared many tales from these people, but he also told stories of other Anabaptists like the Hutterites, as well as those of other Protestants and Catholics. He studied the people from wherever they came, whose ancestors were Black Sea, Volga, or Volhynian Germans. In all cases he brought understanding, compassion, and a great sense of humor to his telling of the tales of our people. It is hoped that we will all get a sense of the spirit of the man, Reuben Goertz, as we hear some of his tales relayed to us. He has stories about the early years of settlement in the Dakotas, the problems of adjustment to a new language and different customs, information about the food they ate: the stories of immigrants showing great fortitude and humanity as they become Americans. George Niesl will introduce you to the stories told by Reuben Goertz, but will also tell you about some items that our Germans from Russia ancestors adopted from their Russian neighbors. We'll have a chance to try some food with which we may not be familiar. Try to be there for this experience with your friends at the Northern California Chapter meeting of the GRHS in Sacramento. Note: Our meeting location is changed to the Fellowship Hall because the St. John's Art Festival is in Goethe Hall. You are invited to come early and see all the different and beautiful works of art.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2005 Free "How to Begin" Genealogy Seminar Offered The Placer County Genealogical Society announced today it will again be hosting an annual free seminar to the general public on beginning genealogy. "Tracing Your Family Tree - How to Begin," will lead attendees through the process of how to do research, document and keep records in gathering one's family historical data. This year's seminar will be held on Saturday, October 8th, from 9:00AM to 3:00PM, at the Beecher Room of the Auburn Library at 350 Nevada St. On-site registration begins at 8:30AM. Doing genealogical research on your family roots can be a very rewarding hobby. You never know what bits of lost history about your ancestors you will suddenly find. Placer County is rich in historical history of early pioneers trying to strike it rich in the foothills we now call "Gold Country." Where did these people come from and where did they go? How did you and your family end up in the west? Do you know who all your cousins are? If your ancestors are in another part of the country, or world, how do you locate them? All these questions are what stimulate our curiosity to learn more about our roots. This free seminar on beginning genealogy is open to the general public, however, space is limited and reservations are recommended. An optional handbook will be available for $10. You are encouraged to also bring a sack lunch. For reservations, leave a message at (530) 887-2646 or e-mail your name and number of persons attending to research@pcgs.pcgenes.com. The Placer County Genealogical Society has a membership of over 200 members from all around the country. It holds a general meeting at the library on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7-9PM, and features a program speaker on various genealogical subjects. It also offers two specialty day groups, one that studies various subjects of member interest and the other that reviews computer data base program subjects. The Society maintains a web site at www.pcgs.pcgenes.com. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT: Barbara Leak, Seminar Chairperson (530) 887-2646

Hello Everyone, The Sutro Bus trip scheduled for Wednesday, October 26th is still on. However, the GAS board of directors is making a final decision within the next few weeks whether they will sponsor any bus trips in 2006. The reason is rising gas prices. The quotes received from the bus company to provide transportation to and from Sutro are ugly !! The only way to make this project work is to raise prices (at least $40 per person??), and only go if the bus is full and paid for well in advance. If you want to go on the October bus trip, you need to get your reservation and payment to me ASAP. The fee is $25 for GAS members and $30 for non-GAS members. There will be NO REFUNDS for payments received after 9/26/05. If the bus is not at least 3/4 full, the trip may still be canceled. However, if GAS cancels the trip, you will receive a refund. Please call me at 916-481-4413 if you want to make a verbal reservation. I'm at this number from 11 am to 11 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. You can also e-mail your reservation. Reservations are not guaranteed until payment is received. Make checks payable to: GAS. PO Box 1725, North Highlands CA 95660. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. Sharon G.
