    1. Board of Certified Genealogists Standards Class (Family History Report Writing) beginning 5 January
    2. Susan H. Jackman
    3. Students of Family History, Regarding the possible Genealogy Standards class for Winter Semester in Rancho Cordova at the Adult Ed Computer Lab: I have only one sign up for the web site class offered on Thursday 10-12 and beginning 5 January. The odds of 11 more people registering for this class by next week are 'slim' to say the least!! This means the Genealogy Standards Class (formerly Family History Report Writing) will most likely begin on 5 January. I will send out a confirmation on Tuesday of next week when the office opens. Students can register the first day of class. In the mean time, I need to build a class on a first come, first serve basis. To get your name on the list, please respond to this email to confirm that you will be attending. THANKS! Below find class details previously posted to this mailing list: Fellow Researchers, In the past I have offered a Family History Report Writing Class where we use for our text the Board of Certified Genealogists Standards Manual. This is a FUN class-everyone learns so much, including me! I would like to gather a group of 12-20 interested students on a 'stand-by' basis who would like to take the course. There is a good chance that one of my five classes in January will not fly, and in that case, I would email each interested student for this course. Each of you would have one week notice of the course if it does go. The class would probably begin on Thursday 12 January-one week after the other classes begin---and would run for 9-10 weeks from 10 am-12 pm. This class is to the family historian what a music theory class is to the Musician. We learn how to evaluate genealogical evidence and use it to write a thorough report for our family/clients/peers showing proof of relationships through circumstantial and other evidence using the Board of Certified Genealogists Standards Manual. 1. Steve Morse on New York Census Data
    2. Navigating the New York Census with Fewer Tears Sunday, December 18, 10 a.m. Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento Albert Einstein Residence Center, 1935 Wright St., Sacramento For those with relatives in New York during the early part of the 20th century, obtaining census data about them has often been often difficult. Now, thanks to genealogy Web pioneer Steve Morse, things are a little easier. On December 18, you can be part of the first audience to hear from Steve about his newest one-step research focus: the New York state censuses for 1905, 1915 and 1925. Steve, internationally known for his work in simplifying the Ellis Island data base and other Web sites (see www.stevemorse.org) will once again address the Jewish Genealogy Society of Sacramento. There were several state censuses taken in New York starting from 1790. Steve says the most valuable for genealogical purposes are the 1905, 1915, and 1925 censuses because that was a time of a large influx of immigration. While these censuses must there were assorted aids for navigating through those censuses, they were often hard to use, covered only specific years or boroughs, and were not available at all libraries. Steve's one-step Web site rectifies that situation by putting a universal finding aid online that covers all the New York City boroughs in each of the three census years. Come learn more on Sunday, December 18. For more information, contact the Sacramento Jewish Genealogical Society at jgs_sacramento@yahoo.com or leave a message at 916-486-0906 ext. 361.

    2. Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento Sunday, November 20, 10 a.m. Albert Einstein Residence Center, 1935 Wright St. "Wayfarers" Author Stuart Tower "Mass Jewish Emigration in the Early 20th Century" Tower is the author of "The Wayfarers," an epic historical novel focusing on the story of 60 young Jewish men and women and their compelling march across 1500 miles of Europe in the early 1900s. In Yiddish these wayfarers were called "fusgeyers." Tower will discuss his extensive research about the fusgeyers and their trek from Romania to the ports from which they sailed to America. These young travelers were organized in an almost military fashion and developed a pioneer spirit of self-help. In crossing the miles on foot, they braved much adversity and anti-Semitic acts. Commenting on the book, Steven Spielberg said, "In today's electronic society, plain old-fashioned, captivating story-telling is rare. In "The Wayfarers," Stuart Tower has done just that." Two film production companies are now considering making the book into a possible feature film. Tower, who lives in Southern California, has spoken at genealogical society meetings around the world, including a presentation in Washington, D.C. in 2003 when "The Wayfarers" was published. An earlier work of his is "Withered Roots," where he described the lives of Eastern European Jews who survived the Holocaust and remained in their home countries. Please join us Sunday morning, November 20.
