I just watched Ch. 3 news and they had a brief clip on what was brought up at the meeting tonight on the CA records online. A Karen Speler, it seems, was mortified to find her birth records on the site, and so she is trying to have their availability either banned or at least modified. Though they did say that they had 750,000 identity thefts last year, none were linked back to rootsweb. >>I am so looking forward to other states my family lived in, mainly PA, to go online with theirs, and hopefully, this CA record problem hoopla won't affect them from uploading, or any other states too. >>Roni Dillon
I saw portion of the same news clip. The article in the Sac Bee mentioned a Senate panel meeting convened by Sen. Jackie Speier. She is the current privacy crusader in our State Senate. PCGS is a member of the Genealogical & Historical Council of Sacramento Valley. The Council, in conjunction with the California State Genealogical Alliance, has a legislative watch committee that monitors the State legislature for bills that could adversely affect our access to records. This committee was formed as a direct result of an attempt to close California vital records several years ago. (An attempt that was successfully fought off.) You can be assured that the Council's committee is keeping tabs on Sen. Speier. Two PCGS Board members - Pam Dallas & myself - are also Council Board members. If anything happens that we need to get excited about, Pam & I will know about it immediately and will pass the information on to you.
