    1. [CA-PCGS] Searching for Ruby Earl King
    2. toffelmier
    3. I received the following email but didn't find Ruby King on our current membership list. Does anyone know her or of her? Maybe she is a FHC patron. Cindy Dear Cindy, I do not see a membership chairman listed on your website, so I will start at the top with my question. I'm sure you will know where to direct my request. I am trying to locate Ruby Earl King, last known address P.O. Box 1093, Foresthill, CA 95631-1093. I find that town listed as being in Placer Co, CA. I wondered if she was, or had been, a member of your society. Ruby submitted information on a line on which I am also working. I wrote to her, but my letter was returned. I found a Michael King listed, through online directory, in Foresthill, sent an email and it bounced back. I do not find a Ruby King who died in Placer Co, CA for online CA death index, unless she died very recently. I have posted queries looking for her on websites for the surnames on which she is working (Yates and Wright). I am so in hopes she has just moved, and you might know where(?) If you should have a new address for her, and do not feel free to give it out, I would be glad to mail a letter to you, for her, with a stamped envelope which you could then forward. Any help appreciated, Joan E. Rambo KinKatcher@aol.com

    1. [CA-PCGS] ARIAS Pennsylvania vitals release
    2. Roni Dillon
    3. At the board meeting today I brought this up, and so I decided to share this everyone who is researching PA. Sometime soon, millions of digitalized records, ranging from the 19th century county birth, death, marriage dockets to the collections of photographs illustrating every aspect of the PA experience will be added to the PA Powerport site for us to use. No date set yet, but the site is www.phmc.state.pa.us They have very little on it right now, of some war records, but more is promised, eventually, as they put it. So keep it in mind, I know I will. >>Roni Dillon

    3. Hello again Bobette, The National Genealogical Society's library has *The Genealogist*. They will loan out to NGS members. Looks like the shipping is $10 for 2 books (plus return posteage). PCGS belongs to NGS, so you might be able to have PCGS borrow it for you, or I personally am willing to get it for you as I am an NGS member. Or you can use the NGS photocopying service. It costs $1.25, plus 25 cents per page for NGS members. There is an extra $5 surcharge for non-members, but again I can get it for you at the member rate. They probably will not photocopy the entire artice due to copyright, but they probably can do a few pages. You can check out the NGS library catalog and copy services at www.ngsgenealogy.org Barbara

    3. Thanks for the information about "The Genealogist". I was at the FHC today, and Joyce House suggested that I look on PERSI. Cindy Tofflemeir came in and we tried to find the article, couldn't even find a periodical (newsletter) called "the genealogist". I entered key words from the title of the article, but no luck. (Cindy I found the complete title after you left.) Does anyone have the most recent PERSI disk? The one at the FHC is not the latest one, although you would think it would have something from 1985.. I was just curious to see what a model genealogy would look like. Gerry, I went to Cyndi's List and found that page your referred me to and several others. I also found that Dollarhides Ahnentafel System (http://www.genealogybulletin.com/archives/HTML/current11.html ) is different than Rory's Ahnentafel System(http://free.prohosting.com/~roryc/arts/num.htm ), they number collaterals completely differently. -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Leak <kin2barb@pacbell.net> To: Bobette McClellan <mamabobi@foothill.net>; CA-PCGS-L@rootsweb.com <CA-PCGS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, July 03, 2001 11:24 AM Subject: Re: [CA-PCGS] Re: Numbering Your Genealogy Bobette, "The Genealogist" is a periodical -- one of the "scholarly journals" -- edited by Charles Hansen, FASG, and Gale Ion Harris, PhD, FASG. 3. Roni, There are more than one genealogy program that is currently "free". Two of these that come to mind are: PAF available at the LDS site http://www.familysearch.org and Legacy available at http://www.legacy.com These are not shareware where you download, try and then pay if you like the program. These are truly "free". Legacy wants you to like the program and upgrade to their "Plus" version or whatever they call it. Of course both of these programs are not like FTM but they are free. None of the programs are identical but they do allow you to enter information and print it out in different forms and trees. 1. [CA-PCGS] Civil War pensions
    2. Barbara Leak
    3. Service from NARA is improving. A couple of months ago I reported that a pension file I ordered took six months to arrive. I just received another one that only took four months. Sometimes the records we find are not the ones we expect. Here is my latest story: My gr-gr-gr-grandmother's brother, William McIntosh, died in the Civil War (Union). He was only about 20 years old. No wife or kids. His mother applied for and received a pension based on William's military service. Nothing unusual in that -- mothers who were dependant on their sons for support were eligible for pensions. Usually these dependant mothers were widows. What is unusual is that in this particular case William's mother was not a widow. Her husband was still alive. However, her husband had a disability and they were able to prove that the disability predated William's enlistment in the army. The parents were dependent on William to work the farm for their support. When William died, his parents fell into very sorry financial circumstances. William's father was not eligible for a pension, but his mother was. What makes this situation even more interesting is the probate records. William's father died owning nothing, not even his home. And so there are no probate records, as he had no estate to be probated. But there are probate records for William's mother. There was only one item of value in her estate, "a draft for pension money amounting to $24.00." Who would have thought that a soldier's mother -- one who had a husband and five other children still living -- would receive a dependent's pension? Who would have thought that a widow would have a probated estate, when her husband didn't? Who would have thought that anyone would have a probated estate, when that person was nearly destitute? It just goes to show. . . you don't know what you'll find until you look. Barbara Leak

    2. Barbara Leak
    3. Not to be a doom-sayer, but you may have to wait a little longer than April before you get to see the 1930 census. The National Archives will be the first to have it available. And the regional archives, such as the one in San Bruno, will probably get it right away. But as I recall, when the 1920 census was released it took the Family History Library a few months to get it all processed into their system. And it was a couple of years before Sutro Library found the money to purchase it. Barbara Leak
