    3. Dear Listers: I want your opinion of this important item. As most of you already know, this mailing list started a website entitled" Gateway to Ontario Cemeteries" in late March or early April of 2004. With the cooperation of many we have started a website that covers every county and district in Ontario. I would be telling a lie if I stated we had every Cemetery in Ontario covered........we don't but that is our goal. Janet and I made a point of seeking out other cemetery sites and ask the owners if we could link their sites to theirs. They were agreeable. Some sites not only had databases on a cemetery, but also had photos. About two months ago I got wind of a project that I thought was great, a Canada wide cemetery database providing location, transcripts etc. For some unknown reason they have never heard of our site, which I made the project managers aware of. Did I mention this project was launched late October of last year? I cannot understand why this project would want to duplicate work that is already done. Am I wrong for being annoyed? Should Janet and I just pull the plug on our Ontario Cemeteries Resources website when we were here first? I am not against the project, but I am against the duplication of something that is already up and running. The ladies who are in charge of the Ontario section of Canada GenWeb cemetery Project have been nice and have placed a link to our site. I am more than willing to carry the GenWeb banner on our site, but I feel we have been overlooked and snubbed, when{ in my opinion} we should be the official site for Ontario. Sheila List Mom and co-owner of Gateway to Ontario Cemeteries.

    3. Sheila, Well here goes on my opinion! The Canada Gen Web takes and we all surmise the whole of "Canada", and is broken down into provinces, and sections of research. There is plenty room for GenWeb, and sites such as Ontario Cemeteries Resources, I realised this when I was researching in Nova Scotia....there are some superbly done shall we say "private" sites of cemeteries, and then there are those that a carried by GenWeb, which are quality as well, they have been submitted by individuals, or linked. Yes, there may be duplication, but a lot of researchers prefer the "private" sites to going full tilt into GenWeb. GenWeb does offer a lot but one has to know how to manouver about the site, and one has to know the provinces, and then counties, with the "private" sites one can get right in, and not have to do much manouvering around, they can generally get to where they are researching quite quickly. GenWeb has been around for ages, as I am sure you know, and they in my estimation generalize far too much, they are too big to do anything else. They are a compilation of different sites. Myself and I am sure there are many others around who research as a hobby, my family tree is complete. Always I have preferred to go into the "private sites". I would not even consider pulling the plug on your's and Janet's site, take the time, go to GenWeb and your site, compare what is included in both sites, in reference to cemeteries the little bit I compared yours has much more info, than the whole GenWeb Cemetery Section. If a link has been given on the GenWeb site, I would consider it more traffic to your site. You are not wrong to be annoyed, I would be, but more for the fact of the claim that they hadn't heard of your site, I would be gracious like I think you are and link up the GenWeb site to your site, nothing ventured nothing gained!
