Hi, The writing on the death certificate must have been as bad as usual. It should be Kingston "Road" and Summit "Road." "Stop 28" was a stop on the bus line. It was until recently a common way of telling where something was on on Kingston Rd. I'm not sure how many stops there were in all. I'm not sure why that address would have been used on the death certificate. Did he die in an accident? Summit Road isn't that far from stop 28 on Kingston Rd. There isn't any hospital near that address. Incidently, Kingston Road got its name because in the early days of the province of Ontario, it was the main route from Toronto to Kingston, Ontario. The latter was, at one point, the capital of Ontario. Toronto is now. You mentioned the undertaker was Mr. Brown. I believe there used to be a Brown's funeral home on Danforth Ave. I assume he merged with McDougall and relocated the funeral home to: McDougall & Brown Funeral Home 416-267-4656 2900 Kingston Road, Scarborough, ON M1M 1N5 I don't know what records they'd have now but they at least could tell you if they are the same funeralhome. Most of the cemeteries in Toronto belong to: Mount Pleasant Group Of Cemeteries 416-696-7866 65 Overlea Boulevard, Toronto, ON M4H 1P1 They do have a centralized database. However, they won't search it for you, you have to make an appointment to go to their head office and do it yourself. Perhaps they'd make an exception for someone for the UK. A cemetery near Kingston Road and Summit Road is: Resthaven Memorial Gardens 416-267-4653 2700 Kingston Road, Scarborough, ON M1M 1M5 I'm not sure if it's one of the Mount Pleasant Group or not. Their staff are very helpful, as I've found from experience--a lot of my ancestors are buried there. Hope this helps. Bruce P.S. I just thought of it. The Toronto Star has all its obit's online. I'll check them out for you later today. ============================================== Bruce Evans M.D. Family Physician and Technical Writer Keep your words both soft and tender, because tomorrow you may have to eat them. -----Original Message----- From: Roma Chatt [mailto:romachatt@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2005 4:15 AM To: CA-ONT-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ON-CEM] Introducing myself Hello All, My name is Roma Chatt (nee SNELL) , I live in Chelmsford, UK. I have at last after many years managed to obtain the death certificate details of Richard and am hoping now to discover his burial place. The details I have are as follows: Richard SNELL died on 19 April 1925 place of death is given as Stop 28, Kingston Head. (He was a deckhand with Ontario Carferry co) his brother was the informant & gave his addresses as Summit Rod, Scarboro (I believe this is also the address of where Richard & Tom would have been living) The undertaker was Mr Brown of 1491 Danforth Avenue Place of Burial is just given as Toronto. Going on the above information would anyone hazard a guess as to which cemetery Richard would have been buried in? Or even a list of cemeteries I could contact? I would be extremely grateful for any help at all. Many thanks from Roma
Hi Bruce, Just to add- the Mount Pleasant Group has been very helpful to me and have often looked up info, particularly if you ask for particular info such as dates and who else is buried in a particular plot and this was all done on the phone. The picture situation there is another story though. Hi, I don't understand, "The picture situation there is another story though." What do you mean?
